Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →In Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Weight mainly affects what happens when racers collide: it influences whether you push another racer aside or get pushed aside. It is separate from Speed, and the value shown for your setup reflects both your character and selected vehicle parts.
What does Weight do?
Weight is a collision stat. The Mario Kart 8 Deluxe guide describes it as determining whether your racer knocks another racer out of the way or gets knocked out of the way when they hit. In practical terms, contact can affect your position in the pack.

The available official descriptions explain this effect qualitatively; they do not provide a formula for how a displayed Weight value translates into a specific amount of force, distance, or a guaranteed collision outcome.
Weight is not Speed
The game lists Weight and Speed as distinct stats. Speed describes how fast the vehicle goes; Weight describes the effect of racer-to-racer contact. A higher Weight value should not be read as a higher top speed.

Your displayed Weight depends on the whole setup
Characters have weight classes—Light, Medium, Heavy, and a variable class for Mii characters—as shown on Nintendo’s Mario Kart 8 Deluxe site. But a character’s class is not the only factor in the setup’s stats. Character values combine with the selected parts, and Nintendo notes that bodies, tires, and gliders affect stats.
That means the useful comparison is between complete builds, not just character labels. A heavier character paired with parts that reinforce Weight is one possible choice, but it also means weighing the other displayed stats and your preferences.

How to check your setup’s stats
- Select your character.
- On the car selection screen, press + or − to display the stats. This is the control method given by Nintendo Support.
- Compare Weight alongside Speed, Acceleration, Handling, and Traction for the character and parts you actually selected.
When should you choose more Weight?
If you are often bumped in close racing, you may prefer a setup with more Weight. Nintendo’s beginner guide describes heavier characters using parts to reinforce Weight as a way to reduce the impact of minor collisions. Treat that as a possible trade-off, not a universal best build: the sources do not establish that the heaviest setup wins every collision or performs best in every mode.
Try a few combinations and judge the stat screen together with how the build feels in your races. Weight is one factor in a customized setup, not a standalone measure of overall performance.
