UNDERTALE’s bad reputation is mainly about some highly visible parts of its online fandom—not a blanket judgment that the game is bad or that all its fans behaved badly. A 2020 NPR retrospective traced online toxicity in part to arguments over the “correct” way to play, while also recording a moderator’s very different experience in a managed community. The available reporting describes a reputation, not how common harmful behavior was or whether that impression has changed since.
What the bad reputation refers to
The clearest documented criticism is about conduct in parts of the fandom: passionate disputes over how people should play and discuss the game. NPR’s 2020 retrospective described a community that produced fan art, edits, cosplay and soundtrack remixes, alongside online toxicity linked to those disagreements. That reporting does not establish that every fan—or even most fans—took part in hostile behavior.

Reid Young, whom NPR identified as Fangamer’s CEO and the manager of the first Undertale fansite, described the mix of talent and problems that can emerge in a large community: “If you get enough people, you get the best and the worst.” That is a useful way to understand how memorable conflicts can shape a community’s public image without defining everyone in it.
Why arguments about how to play could become so personal
UNDERTALE’s design makes a player’s treatment of its characters part of the experience. Toby Fox described it as “a role-playing game where no one has to get hurt.” In an NPR interview, he explained that he wanted players to be able to talk to monsters and designed a system in which most or all could be defeated through conversation. He said that interacting with each character gave them distinct personalities and helped the story take shape.

Fox also described the connection between the game’s mechanics and its narrative: “The story of how I wrote the game is also the story of how I developed the game since the system and the story are intertwined.” It is reasonable to infer that a game tying choices to memorable characters can prompt strong emotional investment. But that design is not proof that the game caused fandom conflict; the connection between the two remains an interpretation, not an established cause.
Why the reputation is not the whole story
The same 2020 NPR retrospective that discussed toxicity also included a counterexample. A moderator named Marr said, “The Undertale community isn’t as bad as everyone says it is.” Her view came from moderating a particular online chatroom, so it cannot represent every fan space—but it does show why a single reputation should not be treated as a universal description.
The coverage portrays a fandom with both creative activity and conflict. Fox’s 2018 interview with Nintendo also speaks to the constructive side of fandom in his own experience: he described how EarthBound and its community connected him with friends and helped lead him toward making his own game. That background is not a verdict on UNDERTALE’s present-day community, but it illustrates that fan communities can be sources of connection as well as friction.

Does the fandom’s reputation mean UNDERTALE is disliked?
No. Criticism of fan conduct is different from criticism of a game’s design or storytelling. Fox has described UNDERTALE as a humorous RPG intended to evoke feelings he associated with classic Japanese role-playing games, including happiness, sadness, fear, courage, friendship, hope, love and justice. The reporting cited here does not establish a current review aggregate, quantify the game’s reception, or measure how widespread the fandom’s negative reputation is.
Nor does it identify which particular incidents most shaped that reputation or establish how it varies by platform, country or community space. NPR’s account is a retrospective published in 2020, not a census of fans in 2026. Treat broad claims about “the Undertale fandom” accordingly: they may reflect visible conflicts, but they do not tell you how an individual fan or community will behave.
