Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Nintendo has never issued a single in-universe explanation for why Wario loves garlic. The most accurate answer has three layers: garlic began as a gameplay power-up in 1994, official character profiles later made it his favorite food and tied it to stamina, and the fit with his greedy, smelly, tough persona is the reason the joke has stuck.
The short answer
Garlic enters Wario’s world as a mechanic before it becomes a personality trait. The explanation for his affection for it comes in three parts, and only the last two are stated by anyone with authority over the character.

- Gameplay origin. Garlic first appears with Wario in Wario Land: Super Mario Land 3 (Game Boy, 1994) as the Garlic Pot power-up.
- Official characterization. Later Nintendo material calls garlic his favorite food and links it to his stamina.
- Character fit. Garlic is pungent, associated with strength, and sits comfortably beside a character who is crude and gluttonous. This is interpretation, not a stated design rationale.
Where garlic starts: the Garlic Pot
Wario Land: Super Mario Land 3 gives Wario four Power Up Pots: Garlic, Bull, Jet and Dragon. The Garlic Pot works much like Mario’s Super Mushroom. It turns Small Wario into normal Wario, and a normal Wario into Bull Wario, which adds size and an extra hit of protection. In practical terms, garlic is the item that makes Wario bigger and sturdier, and that association is the seed of everything that follows.
Two details are worth knowing before you draw conclusions from the item. The Garlic Pot is one of a set of transformations rather than a food-specific design, so the game itself does not explain why a garlic pot exists. And the wording of the in-game manual for the Garlic Pot was not verified for this article, so this section relies on how the power-up behaves on screen as reported by fan wikis.

What official material says
The clearest official statement comes from the character profile in Mario Superstar Baseball, which reads: “Garlic is Wario’s favorite food. It may lead to his incredible stamina, which makes him excellent at daring plays.” The Super Mario Wiki quotes this text. It is the strongest evidence for the stamina link, and it is phrased as “may,” not as a settled fact about his physiology.
In Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Colonel Roy Campbell describes Wario as constantly eating whole cloves of garlic, which leaves him with smelly breath. Taken together, these two sources give garlic a consistent role: it is his food, it is the source of his bad breath, and it is connected to his endurance.

The crêpe twist
Wario’s designer Hiroji Kiyotake is reportedly quoted in an older Super Mario Land 2 developer interview as saying Wario’s favorite food was crêpes. This detail comes from a fan forum’s summary of that interview rather than from a full transcript, so treat it as reported rather than confirmed. If accurate, it shows that garlic was not part of Wario’s identity from the start. A Wario Forums user in a thread titled “Wario’s favourite food isn’t garlic?” offered the same reading: “I think garlic became his favorite over time.” That is a fan opinion, but it fits the sequence of appearances.
Fan theories and why they stay theories
The most common explanation is that garlic is a muscle and stamina food, which would make it a natural match for a strongman. A Wario fan account on X argues that his garlic obsession is “more than likely based on garlic’s positive effects on aiding muscle growth and stamina.” This is speculation built on the same stamina line Nintendo used, and it should not be presented as the developers’ intent. Nothing in the official material mentions muscle growth.

How garlic appears across the franchise
Garlic’s role varies by series. The table below separates what is stated in official profiles or gameplay from what comes from fan wiki summaries.
| Series or game | Garlic’s role | Source and confidence |
|---|---|---|
| Wario Land: Super Mario Land 3 (1994) | Garlic Pot power-up: Small Wario to normal, normal to Bull Wario | Gameplay as described on fan wikis; manual wording not verified |
| Wario Land series (general) | Often a healing or strength item | Fan wiki summaries; treat as a common pattern, not a universal rule |
| WarioWare series | Often stands in for lives or health in Wario’s stages | Search-summary level evidence; not confirmed as universal |
| WarioWare: Touched! | Wario-Man transformation uses a mandrake root, which the original localization called “nasty garlic” | Wording not verified; the exact localized phrase may differ |
| Super Smash Bros. | Chomp attack and bad breath tied to garlic | SmashWiki; Colonel Roy Campbell’s dialogue in Brawl |
| Mario Superstar Baseball | Official profile: favorite food, linked to stamina | Nintendo profile as quoted by the Super Mario Wiki |
Some claims that circulate, such as a team called “Wario Garlics” or garlic cloves as Phony Ball items in Mario Superstar Baseball, appear only in search-level summaries. They are not confirmed here and should be checked against the games before being repeated.

What the evidence supports
The best-supported reading is that garlic gives Wario strength and endurance in gameplay and that official profiles describe it as his favorite food because of stamina. The smell and the Smash dialogue reinforce a persona that is loud and unrefined. The crêpe quote and the fan theories suggest the link developed over time rather than being planned from the start, but none of that is official. Nintendo has not explained the choice directly, so the answer is an informed reading of how the series uses garlic, not a confirmed design rationale.
Two practical points for readers who want to verify this themselves: check the Garlic Pot behavior in an original copy of Wario Land: Super Mario Land 3 rather than relying on summaries, and read the full Mario Superstar Baseball profile text before quoting it, because the wording above comes from a secondary quote.
