This message is a symptom, not a diagnosis. It can point to an Epic service issue, a sign-in or account-linking problem, a verification failure, or a browser or launcher session loop. Check Epic’s live status first, then use the exact error wording and the place you are signing in to choose the right fix.
Check whether Epic is having a service issue
Before changing account or device settings, check Epic’s status page for Fortnite and login incidents. If a service problem is listed, wait for Epic’s update and try again after it is resolved. A past support notice reported a login incident and later said it had been resolved; that notice describes that incident, not current availability. [Epic login error guide]
Use the full error message to choose a fix
Epic documents several distinct sign-in problems, so the wording shown on screen matters more than the generic “unable to log in” summary.
| What you see | What to try |
|---|---|
| “Invalid Credentials” | Check that you are using the email address for the correct Epic account. If necessary, reset its password through Epic’s sign-in flow. [Epic login error guide] |
| A message that a platform account is already linked | Identify which Epic account is connected to the console identity before changing links. Sign in with the Epic email option, or use the console sign-in icon in a private browser window to find the linked account. [Epic login error guide] |
| A two-factor authentication (2FA) code is rejected | Request the newest code and enter it promptly. For an authenticator app, set the device’s date and time to update automatically, then use a fresh code. Choose “Try another way” if Epic offers another verification method. [Epic login error guide] |
| “Rate Limit Exceeded” or a message that the service is being used too frequently | Stop retrying and wait. Epic says the block clears automatically; if it continues after a few minutes, wait 24 hours. Support cannot speed up the reset. [Epic login error guide] |
| The account is inactive or you cannot access it | Use Epic’s account recovery process rather than continuing to guess credentials. [Epic account recovery] |
If sign-in keeps looping in a browser or launcher
Repeated returns to the login page can result from cached session data or cookie conflicts, according to Epic Games Player Support. [Epic login-loop guidance]

Epic Games Launcher sign-in

- Clear the Launcher cache, then reopen the Launcher and try signing in again. Epic’s login-loop guide provides its cache-clearing instructions. [Epic login-loop guidance]
If the error is generic or the sign-in keeps looping, disconnect any VPN or proxy service temporarily and try again. Epic lists VPN, hosting, and proxy use among possible sign-in issues. [Epic login error guide]
Be careful with console account links
A console-linking error does not necessarily mean your Fortnite progress is gone. It may mean the console identity is already connected to a different Epic account than the one you are trying to use. First identify the linked Epic account and confirm which account holds the progress you want. Do not unlink or relink accounts casually: changing the connection before identifying the correct account can make it harder to access the right Fortnite profile. Epic’s error guide explains how to identify the account associated with a platform sign-in. [Epic login error guide]

Why Epic may ask for a verification code
Epic says it may request multi-factor authentication when you sign in on a new device, after 30 days without signing in, or after clearing browser cookies. A code prompt in those situations does not by itself indicate that the account is compromised. [Epic MFA information]
