DOOM (1993) still works because its central loop is unusually clear: move quickly, read the space, fight what is in front of you, find a route or resource, and keep searching. Its lasting appeal is a design judgment, not a guarantee that every modern player will enjoy a decades-old game, but the combination of speed, nonlinear maps, secrets and concentrated combat remains easy to understand and satisfying to repeat.
The game is also unusually easy to approach today. Modern releases preserve the original campaign alongside enhanced versions, expansions and optional community content, while the Steam edition includes the original DOS versions. Choosing the right release matters if you specifically want the unmodified 1993 experience.

What DOOM (1993) was designed to do
id Software developed DOOM and released it in 1993. Bethesda and Steam describe it as a game that helped pioneer or popularize the first-person shooter. That historical status explains its influence, but influence alone does not make an old game enjoyable now. The more useful question is whether its moment-to-moment decisions remain legible and rewarding.
Xbox Wire’s retrospective describes the original as a fast, combat-focused experience with “blistering pace,” nonlinear level design, secrets and surprises. It also emphasizes that DOOM has little substantial plot compared with story-led shooters. Those observations provide a practical explanation for its durability: the game puts most of its attention on actions the player can immediately understand.

The core loop remains readable
Movement creates constant decisions
Speed is not merely a visual flourish. Moving quickly changes how the player evaluates danger. You are continually deciding whether to press forward, create distance, search another passage or return to an earlier area. Because the game does not bury those choices under long dialogue scenes or elaborate menus, the consequences arrive quickly.
That clarity is an editorial interpretation of the qualities Xbox Wire highlights, rather than a measured claim that the game suits every current player. A player who enjoys rapid spatial decisions can understand the objective almost immediately. Someone seeking cinematic pacing, extensive character development or modern accessibility features may find the same focus restrictive.
Combat is the repeated test
Xbox Wire characterizes DOOM as raw combat against waves of demons. The important point is not simply the number of enemies; it is the tight connection between movement and fighting. Staying alive requires reading threats while continuing to navigate. The player is rarely asked to solve a separate puzzle and then enter a separate combat arena. Movement, positioning and attacks are part of one continuous problem.

Why nonlinear maps still matter
Levels are spaces to learn, not corridors to follow
Xbox Wire specifically credits DOOM’s nonlinear maps with encouraging exploration. Instead of presenting every objective as a straight sequence of rooms, the levels ask you to remember spaces, recognize connections and test routes. Progress therefore has two parts: surviving fights and building a mental map.
That structure gives a familiar room a second life. Returning to an earlier area is not automatically backtracking for its own sake; it can be a way to investigate a newly accessible route or understand how separate sections connect. The player’s knowledge becomes a resource alongside health and ammunition.
Exploration has a purpose
Secrets and off-the-beaten-path discoveries give exploration a concrete reason. Xbox Wire notes that DOOM used secrets and surprises to keep players searching. Finding an optional area changes the rhythm of play: instead of simply clearing the next visible threat, you begin asking what the level is withholding.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThe design does not require a large lore database to make discovery meaningful. A hidden route or unexpected room is valuable because it changes what you can see, where you can go or how prepared you feel for the next encounter. That is a form of reward that remains understandable even when the surrounding technology is dated.

A focused game can age better than a busy one
Xbox Wire describes DOOM as having little plot and an emphasis on blasting through enemies. That narrow scope can be an advantage. The game does not ask the player to remember a large cast, follow lengthy exposition or manage a set of unrelated progression systems before the action begins.
Calling that an advantage is analysis rather than a claim made by a scientific usability study. The likely benefit is reduced friction between intention and play: if you want to move, fight and explore, the game spends most of its time letting you do exactly that. The trade-off is equally clear. Players who need a character-driven narrative, extensive customization or a guided sequence of objectives may experience the focus as limitation rather than elegance.
DOOM’s historical reach helped preserve its design
Xbox Wire reported in 2016 that DOOM had sold well over one million copies and reached an estimated 20 million players through the shareware release of the first third of the game. The 20 million figure is an estimate attributed to that retrospective, not an independently verified total, and “well over one million” is not a precise sales number.

How to play it today: original and enhanced options
Current storefronts do not all provide the same package. Bethesda’s combined DOOM + DOOM II release includes the original games, expansions, enhancements and support for community-created content. Bethesda lists versions for Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch and PC platforms. Game Pass access requires an active subscription.
| Version or route | What is established | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| Steam release | Steam states that the original DOS versions of DOOM (1993) and DOOM II are included. | Players who want access to the historically original DOS builds as well as the available release features. |
| Bethesda’s combined modern release | Includes DOOM and DOOM II, expansions, enhancements and community mod support across listed console and PC platforms. | Players who want a convenient current-platform package with optional extra content. |
| Epic Games Store purchase | Bethesda Support says this version is the enhanced release issued across platforms in 2019 and does not include the original DOS version. | Players satisfied with the enhanced edition who do not require the DOS original. |
| Game Pass access | Bethesda lists access through Game Pass; an active subscription is required. | Subscribers who want to play without buying a separate copy while access remains part of the service. |
Store pages and platform support can change by region and over time, so check the live listing before purchasing. Earlier PC ownership can also affect which versions a Bethesda account receives. The practical distinction is simple: verify whether the listing contains the DOS original, the enhanced version, or both.

Bethesda describes free add-ons for its re-releases, including community-created packs with additional levels. These are optional extensions, not requirements for understanding the original campaign. Availability can vary by platform and current store support.
Add-ons matter to longevity because they let the same movement-and-combat foundation support new spaces after the official levels are familiar. They also give curious players a way to explore the community’s continuing response to DOOM without replacing the compact design that made the original accessible.

Where DOOM can feel dated
Its minimal story is intentional, but not universal
The limited plot that keeps attention on combat can leave narrative-focused players without enough motivation between encounters. There is no need to treat that reaction as a failure: it is the direct consequence of the game’s priorities.
Navigation asks you to remember
Nonlinear maps reward spatial memory and patience. If you prefer explicit objective markers and a constantly visible route, searching for a switch, doorway or secret can feel opaque. The same uncertainty is what makes discovery satisfying for players who enjoy learning a space.
Fast action demands attention
The pace leaves little room for passive observation during a fight. Players who find rapid threat assessment tiring may prefer to begin with an enhanced release that offers current-platform conveniences, while still recognizing that the underlying design remains from 1993.
A practical way to choose your first playthrough
- Decide whether authenticity is your priority. If you want the original DOS versions, choose a listing that explicitly includes them; Steam states that its release does.
- Choose convenience if you prefer modern hardware. Bethesda’s combined release is available on the major console families and PC, with enhancements and the original games in one package.
- Confirm the storefront’s contents. An Epic purchase supplies the enhanced version and excludes the DOS original, according to Bethesda Support.
- Start with the main campaign. Learn the movement, combat and map-reading loop before adding community packs. Add-ons are extensions, not prerequisites.
- Explore deliberately. When a level branches, treat the alternate path as part of the game’s objective rather than an interruption. Secrets and unexpected routes are central to how DOOM makes exploration rewarding.
- Set expectations about the presentation. You are choosing a focused action game with little plot, not a modern cinematic shooter. That expectation prevents the game’s simplicity from feeling like an unfinished version of something else.
Why the design still feels coherent
Many older games remain historically important but become difficult to play because their goals, interfaces or pacing are hard to parse without context. DOOM avoids that particular problem. Its essential instructions are visible in the act of playing: move through a dangerous space, fight effectively, identify where you can go next and investigate what you have not yet seen.
The retrospective evidence supports the ingredients—speed, raw combat, nonlinear maps, secrets and a focused presentation. The broader conclusion is editorial analysis: those ingredients form a coherent loop in which every major activity reinforces the others. Fast movement makes combat dynamic; combat makes route choice urgent; nonlinear routes make memory useful; secrets make careful exploration worthwhile. Because the systems point in the same direction, the game does not need modern layers of progression to explain what the player should care about.
Verdict: why DOOM (1993) still holds up
DOOM still holds up when a player values immediate action, readable goals and spaces worth learning. Its speed is tied to decision-making, its maps turn navigation into play, and its secrets give exploration a reason to continue after the obvious route is clear. The lack of substantial plot keeps the experience concentrated, though it also narrows its audience.
Modern availability makes trying those ideas straightforward, but availability is not proof of timelessness. The stronger case is the design itself: the move-fight-find-explore loop remains coherent, repeatable and easy to act on. That is why a 1993 shooter can still feel like a complete game rather than merely an important artifact.
