Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsA “broken pipe” error means FFmpeg tried to write to a pipe or output endpoint that was no longer accepting data. It does not, by itself, explain why that endpoint stopped accepting it. In a YouTube radio setup, FFmpeg might be reading a YouTube stream, publishing to YouTube Live, or passing data between programs—so the command and the lines immediately before the error determine what to investigate.
First establish what “on a YouTube radio stream” means
The phrase can describe different directions of travel. FFmpeg may be pulling a stream from YouTube, pushing an encoded stream to YouTube Live, or participating in a shell pipeline while either of those is happening. YouTube’s live encoder recommendations apply when publishing to YouTube Live; they do not automatically apply to reading a YouTube source.
FFmpeg’s error text identifies a failed write, not the process or event that closed the other end. A pipe consumer may have exited, a remote connection may have ended, or a server may have stopped accepting data. The exact output or pipe named in the log matters.
Locate the failing process and endpoint
Check which program printed the message
Capture the full command, timestamps, and standard error from every program involved. In a command such as producer | ffmpeg ..., either process might fail. A downloader or extractor’s BrokenPipeError is not the same as FFmpeg reporting an error while writing its own output. Record each process’s exit status as well.

Read the log immediately before the error
Identify whether FFmpeg was writing to standard output, a local file, an HTTP destination, an RTMP destination, or another endpoint. Note whether the failure happens immediately, after a period of successful streaming, or when the input ends. Those details narrow the search, but the error text alone does not establish a single cause.
Isolate input, processing, and output
Test one part of the path at a time rather than changing encoder settings at random.

- Test the input by itself. If FFmpeg is reading a YouTube stream, check whether it can open and read that input independently. If the source cannot be read reliably, investigate that source and input protocol before changing a remote-output configuration.
- Write a short local sample. Use the same input and processing settings, but write a brief sample to a local file. If that succeeds, FFmpeg can process the input and create a local output under those conditions; the remote destination is not part of this test.
- Test the remote destination with a known-good local file. This separates a destination or connection problem from the live input and its processing. If this test fails too, focus on the output endpoint, credentials, connection, or server response.
- For a shell pipeline, inspect both sides. Preserve stderr and exit status for the producer and FFmpeg. A consumer that exits early can close the pipe while a producer is still writing, which can make the writer report a broken pipe.
These are isolation tests, not guaranteed fixes. A 2019 FFmpeg-user mailing-list exchange describes local-file and destination-isolation checks for a related pipe-to-RTMP setup; it does not establish the cause or exact commands for every YouTube radio workflow.
If FFmpeg is reading an HTTP stream
FFmpeg’s HTTP protocol has reconnect options for particular input-side failures. Depending on the installed build and the observed behavior, the relevant options include:

reconnectfor a disconnect before the input reaches EOF.reconnect_at_eofto treat EOF as an error and reconnect, which can suit live or endless streams.reconnect_on_network_errorandreconnect_on_http_errorfor specified network or HTTP errors.- Retry limits to constrain how long or how often reconnection is attempted.
Check the HTTP protocol options supported by your installed FFmpeg build and use only the options that match the input protocol and observed failure. These settings address HTTP input behavior; they do not repair a failed RTMP output write.
If FFmpeg is publishing to YouTube Live
First confirm that YouTube Live is the output, not the source. YouTube’s published live encoder guidance specifies RTMP or RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), AAC or MP3 audio, and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. YouTube recommends RTMPS. Compare the actual outgoing stream with those requirements and check the live control room’s diagnostics.

These are compatibility checks, not a diagnosis for every broken pipe. A stream that meets them can still lose its connection or encounter another output-side problem. Use the endpoint identified in FFmpeg’s log and the isolated destination test to investigate further.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When the output connection is temporary
FFmpeg’s FIFO muxer can separate encoding from muxing and attempt output recovery. Its recovery behavior, retry timing, and queue settings depend on the output protocol and the command. If its queue fills, drop_pkts_on_overflow can allow processing to continue by dropping packets. That keeps some continuity at the cost of omitting part of the stream; it is not lossless recovery and does not prove the underlying endpoint problem is fixed.

Do not paste a generic FIFO option block into an unrelated command and assume it is a universal cure. Choose recovery settings only after identifying the output muxer, protocol, and whether missing audio or video is acceptable.
Common symptoms and next checks
- The error appears right away: verify which endpoint FFmpeg is trying to write to, whether the destination is reachable, and whether a shell-pipeline consumer has already exited.
- The stream works for a while, then fails: note the failure time and inspect the preceding log lines to determine whether the input disconnected or the output stopped accepting data. Input reconnect options help only when the failing side is a compatible HTTP input.
- The local-file test works, but the remote-output test fails: focus on the remote destination and its connection rather than treating the message as proof of an encoding problem.
- The remote-output test works with a local file, but the live-input test fails: focus on input availability and input-side behavior.
- The error appears at end of input: determine whether a finite source ended normally or an endless/live input unexpectedly reached EOF. Reconnecting at EOF is relevant only for a source that is intended to continue.
- A downloader or another program reports the error: capture that program’s stderr and exit status separately; FFmpeg’s own output settings may not be the failing part.

What to include when asking for a specific fix
If the isolation tests do not identify the failing side, include the complete FFmpeg command with secrets removed, the complete log around the failure, FFmpeg version and build configuration, operating system, and whether you are reading from YouTube, publishing to YouTube Live, or piping between programs. Without those details, a precise root cause or command-level fix cannot be established.
