Football Manager 25 was canceled outright on 6 February 2025 after two release-date moves. Sports Interactive said that, despite progress in some areas and consumer playtesting, the game’s overall player experience and interface still fell short of its quality standard. The studio rejected releasing it in that state and patching it later. That is a credible quality-first rationale—but it is not proof that canceling the game improved its successor or that the decision paid off for players.
Why was Football Manager 25 canceled?
Sports Interactive said it had not achieved its aims in enough areas. Its statement acknowledged that some parts of the game had met targets, but said the overall player experience and interface remained below the studio’s standard. The evaluation included consumer playtesting, though the studio did not publish a sample size or numerical results.

“Whilst many areas of the game have hit our targets, the overarching player experience and interface is not where we need it to be,” the studio said in its 6 February 2025 development update.
The decision followed a difficult development cycle, according to the studio. In an October 2024 update, it said work was progressing more slowly than expected and that the additional time would not be enough to bring quality and experience up to expectations. That update moved the planned release to March 2025.

Why not release it and fix problems later?
Sports Interactive said it considered continuing with the existing version and improving it after launch, but rejected that path: “We could have pressed on, released FM25 in its current state, and fixed things down the line – but that’s not the right thing to do.” The studio also said a release after March would arrive too late in the football season to expect players to buy another game later that year.
Those reasons make the cancellation understandable as a quality-first choice: the studio said the game was not ready to its own standard, and a late launch could have asked players to pay for a new annual edition near the end of its useful season. But they remain the company’s explanation, not independent evidence that cancellation was commercially or creatively optimal.
What happened to FM25 pre-orders?
The cancellation covered every version and platform; Football Manager 25 was not released. Sports Interactive said pre-purchases through official SEGA-approved retailers would be refunded in full automatically, and directed players with questions to their point of purchase. SEGA’s 7 February 2025 corporate notice described refunds for digital pre-purchases under each platform’s policy, so the specific process may depend on the seller or platform.

No. Sports Interactive said it would not produce an FM24 update with 2024/25 season data because doing so would divert critical resources from development of the next release. The cancellation statement also said FM24 subscription availability was still under discussion with platform partners and licensors at the time; that was a statement of status in February 2025, not confirmation of its availability today.

SEGA announced Football Manager 26 in September 2025 as the successor, with releases planned for PC, Mac, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch and Netflix Mobile. SEGA described it as the series’ first game powered by Unity and highlighted a new interface, a Premier League licence and women’s football in its 11 September 2025 announcement. These are announced features and platforms, not evidence on their own that the cancellation delivered a better player experience.
SEGA listed FM26 Touch for Nintendo Switch in physical and digital editions, with a 4 December 2025 release. Its announcement said FM26, Console and Touch could carry saves from FM24 and FM23, while FM26 Mobile was limited to FM24 Mobile saves. These dates and details describe the publisher’s 2025 announcements; they should not be read as a current release calendar.
