If Fortnite keeps closing on your Nintendo Switch, start with the general steps Nintendo recommends for software that closes unexpectedly: restart the console, install system and game updates, check Fortnite for corrupt data, then delete and redownload it if needed. Test the game after each step so you can tell whether anything changed. Nintendo does not publish 11 distinct Fortnite-crash fixes; the checklist below sticks to supported troubleshooting and separates unrelated errors from actual crashes.
First, identify what is going wrong
A game that closes during play is different from a matchmaking error, an Epic server connection message, or an update that is not progressing. Nintendo’s guidance for unexpected software closures is general Switch troubleshooting, while its Fortnite-specific page addresses particular account, matchmaking, version, and server-connection problems.

- Fortnite closes or returns to HOME: follow the steps for an unexpected software closure below. Nintendo’s unexpected-closure article covers Switch, Switch Lite, and OLED Model. [Ed: URL not supplied]

Fix Fortnite closing unexpectedly
1. Restart the console
- Hold the POWER button for at least three seconds.
- Select Power Options, then Restart.
- If the console is unresponsive, hold POWER for 12 seconds to force it off, then turn it back on. Nintendo’s dedicated unexpected-closure guidance gives this procedure.
After restarting, open Fortnite and see whether the same crash happens again.

- Minecraft is a game about placing blocks and going on adventures
- Explore randomly generated worlds and build amazing things from the simplest of homes to the grandest of castles

2. Update Nintendo Switch system software
- Open System Settings.
- Select System, then System Update.
- Install any available update and retry Fortnite.
3. Update Fortnite
- Connect the console to the internet.
- On HOME, highlight Fortnite without opening it.
- Press + or −, then choose Software Update → Via the Internet.
Nintendo notes that Switch 2 and Nintendo Switch use different Fortnite versions. Check that the installed version is intended for your console, then check for an update.
4. Check Fortnite for corrupt data
- Open System Settings → Data Management → Manage Software.
- Select Fortnite and choose Check for Corrupt Data.
- If the console reports a problem, follow its prompt; otherwise, launch the game and test again.
5. Delete and redownload Fortnite
If restarting, updating, and checking for corrupt data do not resolve the closure, Nintendo recommends deleting the affected downloadable software and downloading it again. For this procedure, remove the microSD card before redownloading Fortnite to the console’s system memory. Then open the game and check whether it still closes.

6. Test whether the microSD card is involved
Nintendo’s general downloaded-software guidance suggests trying another microSD card or downloading the software directly to system memory. Treat this as a way to isolate storage, not proof that the card caused the crash. If Fortnite works from system memory but not from the card, the card or its data may be relevant; the support guidance does not establish a universal card-related cause.
Use the cache reset only for ESP-DIST-001
If Fortnite displays “An error occurred while connecting to Epic servers…” with error code ESP-DIST-001, Nintendo’s Fortnite troubleshooting guidance says clearing the console cache, restarting, and launching Fortnite again can usually fix that specific error. This is not presented as a general solution for crashes.

- Open System Settings → System → Formatting Options → Reset Cache.
- Choose the user whose cache you want to reset and follow the on-screen prompts.
- Restart the console, then start Fortnite again.
Nintendo says this clears saved IDs, passwords, cookies, history, and other cached website data. It does not delete downloaded games or game saves.

Matchmaking error
For the message “That wasn’t supposed to happen – trouble talking to the match maker,” Nintendo advises synchronizing the console clock over the internet. This addresses the named matchmaking problem, not a game that closes unexpectedly.

Cabined Account restrictions
Nintendo’s Fortnite guidance says Cabined Accounts can restrict display names, communications, and purchases. Those account limits are not evidence of a software crash.
Update download stuck or not progressing
Nintendo notes that some games pause downloads while they are being played. Save your progress, close Fortnite from HOME, and check Update Download Progress in User Settings. This is for a stalled download, not a crash fix.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

If Fortnite continues closing after the general software troubleshooting steps, Nintendo advises contacting Nintendo Support for persistent software closures. Nintendo’s Fortnite troubleshooting page also directs players to Epic Games Support for unresolved Fortnite-specific problems. Nintendo’s support pages provide procedures, not published crash rates or fix-success statistics.
