Why Game Companies Like Sony Use Anti-Cheat and Anti-Piracy Technology

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Game companies use anti-cheat and anti-piracy systems to protect different parts of the same business: fair play, digital distribution, player accounts, and the revenue that supports ongoing games. Anti-cheat targets manipulation of play; anti-piracy controls seek to limit unauthorized copying or access. They can share tools, but they are not interchangeable—and Sony’s public documents do not show that it uses one universal system in every PlayStation game.

Anti-cheat, anti-piracy and DRM solve different problems

These terms are related, but describing them as one technology obscures what a game company is trying to protect.

Measure Main target Typical methods or outcomes
Anti-cheat Unfair play and manipulation Client or server checks, behavior analysis, matchmaking restrictions, and account sanctions for tools or conduct that undermine play.
Anti-piracy Unauthorized copying, distribution, or use Encryption, tamper checks, authentication, and entitlement validation that can complicate or delay unauthorized use.
DRM Access to digital software or content License and account checks that govern whether and how a game or its content can be used.
Online enforcement Abuse of accounts and services Suspensions, device or matchmaking restrictions, removal of illicit items, and access limits.

Anti-cheat may target aimbots, wallhacks, automation, memory manipulation, unauthorized client changes, or exploits affecting rankings and virtual economies. Anti-piracy and DRM focus more on whether software or content is being accessed through authorized channels. A game may use overlapping signals—such as account activity, telemetry, or server validation—for more than one purpose, but that does not make the goals identical.

Server-side enforcement is another layer: a server can validate a match result, inventory, currency, purchase, or unlock instead of trusting data stored only on a player’s device. This can make local tampering less consequential and let a publisher adjust checks without replacing the whole game client. It also makes some features dependent on accounts, internet access, and continued server support.

Why cheating can threaten a game’s business

Cheating can damage a game even if only a minority of players cheat. When ranked matches feel unreliable, legitimate players may stop competing, playing, or spending on optional content. The company may also face more moderation, investigations, support requests, and reputational damage. In games with persistent economies, manipulated currency, items, or progression can affect other players and the value of the game’s content.

That is why publishers think beyond the initial sale. A live game’s commercial value can depend on people continuing to play, returning for updates, buying expansions or cosmetics, and trusting the service. Competitive scenes, streaming, and matchmaking also rely on the perception that results are credible.

Denuvo’s March 2021 announcement about its anti-cheat technology cited its own survey claim that cheating could repel 77% of gamers from a game. That is a vendor-provided marketing figure, not an independent measure of industry-wide behavior. Its announcement illustrates the commercial case vendors make, but it should not be read as a universal estimate of lost players or revenue.

Why launch-window piracy draws attention

Publishers have a particular reason to protect a new game’s release period: marketing, reviews, pre-orders, and early-adopter demand are concentrated around launch. An unauthorized build can spread quickly, expose unfinished content, and complicate control over release timing and distribution. This is especially relevant for premium games whose sales may be strongest before discounts become common.

That does not mean every unauthorized copy represents a lost purchase. Some people who download a game would not have bought it, and others may purchase later. Download counts cannot simply be converted into lost sales. The defensible point is that publishers see piracy as a risk to launch revenue, distribution control, and commercial timing—not that they can precisely calculate every sale it displaced.

Denuvo’s 2021 announcement claimed that about 70% of a game’s revenue was earned in its first two weeks. That is the vendor’s figure, not a universal industry statistic. DRM can raise the cost of unauthorized use or delay its availability, but it cannot guarantee permanent protection.

Why Sony is a useful example—and what its policies establish

Sony is a console-platform holder, storefront operator, publisher, and provider of online services. Security decisions can therefore affect more than an individual game: they intersect with platform access, accounts, purchases, multiplayer, and the digital ecosystem around PlayStation.

Sony’s U.S. Software EULA says software is licensed, restricts unauthorized distribution and circumvention, and says SIE may use fraud-detection tools, telemetry, anti-cheat systems, and audits of account behavior. It also says some games may require agreement to separate third-party middleware terms, including anti-cheat software on PC. Sony’s Terms of Service and Product Software License Agreement likewise address DRM, authentication, and measures to prevent unauthorized use.

Logitech G F310 Wired Gamepad Controller Console - Blue/Black
  • With broad game support, the Logitech Gamepad F310 works with old standbys to today's biggest titles, so it's easy to set up and use with your favorite games.
  • Profiler software allows the gamepad to be programmed to perform keyboard and mouse commands for games without gamepad support.* * Requires software installation.
  • A familiar control layout that doesn't require a learning curve to be able to use, with all the same buttons as on an Xbox 360.
  • The unique floating D-pad rests on four switches-instead of a single pivot point-making it responsive to quick changes in direction.
  • The six-foot cord lets you lean back and play a comfortable distance from your PC monitor.

These documents establish that Sony reserves authority to use security and enforcement measures. They do not identify one product deployed in every game, nor do they prove a universal check-in schedule or identical requirements across titles. Sony’s terms describe digital content as licensed, although local consumer law and the specific terms applicable to a purchase may affect a player’s rights.

Middleware availability is not universal deployment

In March 2021, Denuvo announced that its anti-cheat technology was available to publishers through the PlayStation 5 Tools and Middleware program. The vendor described it as a way to protect online gameplay and sensitive game logic. This supports the narrower statement that third-party security middleware was made available in Sony’s development ecosystem—not that Sony uses Denuvo in all PlayStation games.

There are three separate decisions: a platform holder can authorize or support a tool; a publisher can choose whether to integrate it; and a studio can decide where and when a game uses it. A tool might apply to a PC version, online modes, or a particular stage of a game’s lifecycle rather than every platform and feature.

How security systems work—and why PC anti-cheat raises questions

Controls can be placed in the game client, on a server, or across both. Client-side integrity checks can look for signs that game files or processes have been altered. Server-side systems can compare events, progression, inventory, purchases, and match outcomes against rules the client cannot set for itself. Account-behavior analysis can help identify patterns that warrant review or enforcement.

Some PC anti-cheat products use drivers with high operating-system privileges; others do not. It is inaccurate to assume that all anti-cheat runs at kernel level or that every such product collects the same information. Higher privileges can improve access to signals relevant to tampering, but they also increase the consequences of a design or implementation mistake and make transparency important.

For a particular game, players can check its privacy notice and middleware terms for what the tool can access, when it runs, what data is collected and retained, and whether it remains after uninstalling the game. It is also worth checking for known compatibility issues with accessibility tools, overlays, virtualization, Linux, security software, or mods. Sony’s EULA warns that some PC titles require separate middleware terms, but it does not specify every product’s permissions.

Digital distribution makes accounts and entitlements more central

Digital delivery makes global distribution fast, but it also makes accounts, licenses, updates, and authentication central to access. Those systems can help publishers manage entitlements and purchases while addressing account fraud, unauthorized redistribution, or modified hardware. The more a game’s business depends on digital purchases and ongoing services, the more valuable platform-level security can become.

Sony announced on July 1, 2026 that production of physical discs for new PlayStation console games would end in January 2028. Its announcement said games already released or scheduled for disc release before that date would not be affected. The move reflects a shift toward digital access; it is reasonable to infer that digital distribution makes entitlement controls more important, but Sony did not say anti-piracy concerns caused the disc-production decision.

The cost to players: privacy, access and preservation

Security controls shift some control from a player’s device to a publisher’s systems. The benefits may include more credible competition and better protection for online economies, but the trade-offs vary by product and game.

  • Privacy: Telemetry and account or device signals raise questions about what is collected, why, and how long it is retained.
  • Performance and compatibility: Client checks or privileged components can affect startup, stability, or compatibility with other software. Effects are product-specific; a general performance claim cannot be made for all systems.
  • False positives and appeals: Unusual hardware, shared devices, software conflicts, or anomalous network behavior can contribute to mistaken flags. Players need a meaningful review and appeal process when enforcement is disputed.
  • Offline access: License authentication and online validation can make play dependent on connectivity or a working service, depending on the title.
  • Modding and preservation: Anti-tamper controls can obstruct legitimate mods, accessibility changes, compatibility fixes, community servers, or archival work. Legal exceptions for preservation and reverse engineering vary by jurisdiction.
  • Account consequences: A sanction may affect access to online features, content, or an account. Players should understand the game’s enforcement and appeal terms before relying on a digital entitlement.

Online services can also end while some offline play remains. Sony’s game-server notices describe title-specific changes, including online features being discontinued while offline campaigns remain playable; the same page says Destruction AllStars server support is scheduled to end on November 25, 2026. The effect of a shutdown depends on the game: server closure does not automatically mean every offline component stops working.

Does DRM work, and why use it despite player frustration?

DRM is not unbreakable. Its practical purpose may be to delay unauthorized use during a commercially important window, increase the effort required, or disrupt a particular distribution route. Whether that benefit justifies the cost depends on the game, threat, implementation, and effect on legitimate players. Public evidence rarely allows a clean calculation of how many sales a specific DRM system saved.

Publishers may accept friction if they believe the alternative—cheating that drives players away, compromised launch timing, fraud, or a damaged virtual economy—would cost more. That is a business judgment, not proof that every security measure works or that every inconvenience is justified.

What to check before buying a game

For a game where offline access, modding, or account independence matters, look for the title’s own requirements and terms rather than assuming every game on a platform behaves the same way.

  • Is an account required, and is an internet connection needed for activation or first launch?
  • Does single-player play require an ongoing connection, or only particular online features?
  • Does the PC version require third-party anti-cheat middleware, and what permissions or data practices are documented?
  • What happens to offline modes or purchased content if the game’s servers close?
  • Are mods supported, restricted, or likely to conflict with anti-cheat?
  • What enforcement and appeal process applies if an account or device is restricted?
  • How do the applicable platform terms and local consumer protections describe access to the purchase?

The bigger picture

Game companies are not protecting a single file with a single universal tool. They are layering controls around competitive play, accounts, digital entitlements, distribution, and persistent services. Sony’s public policies permit several of these measures and its ecosystem has supported third-party middleware, but the choice and scope remain game-specific. The central question for players is whether a given control provides proportionate protection without imposing unreasonable costs on privacy, performance, access, or preservation.
