Dolby announced two separate Unreal Engine plug-ins on June 29, 2023: Dolby Vision for HDR game-image workflows and Dolby Atmos for immersive game audio. Dolby called both free and initially offered them through the Unreal Engine Marketplace. They remain represented in Dolby and Fab materials, but current access, pricing, and Unreal Engine compatibility are not clearly specified in the available listings, so developers should verify those details before building a project around either plug-in.
What Dolby announced
The release was a pair of integrations, not one combined plug-in. Dolby positioned them as ways to work within Unreal Engine rather than build entirely separate custom integrations for Dolby formats. The announcement described both plug-ins as free and available through the Unreal Engine Marketplace at the time. Dolby’s June 29, 2023 announcement is the source for those launch-era claims; they should not be read as a guarantee of current self-service access or universal compatibility.
What the Dolby Vision plug-in does
The Vision plug-in is aimed at HDR authoring and output. Dolby said developers could grade inside Unreal, use Blueprints or Timelines to control image adjustments dynamically, and derive HDR10 and SDR versions from a Dolby Vision grade. The listing also describes Dolby-derived SDR and HDR10 output, mastering up to 10,000 nits, Rec. 2020 color, and mapping based on display capabilities. These are product-description claims, not a promise that every display or console pipeline can show the full mastered range.
Dolby’s launch announcement said the plug-in’s GPU frame-time cost was less than 0.2 milliseconds. That is Dolby’s stated figure, not a general benchmark for all projects: actual performance depends on the engine version, rendering setup, project, resolution, and hardware. Dolby also said the plug-in did not require calibration screens when a game was connected to a Dolby Vision display; developers still need controlled HDR monitoring and testing, including fallback output checks. Dolby’s release announcement and the Fab Dolby Vision listing describe these capabilities.

At launch, Dolby named Windows 10/11 and Xbox Series X|S as Vision development targets. Dolby’s current gaming page directs developers to contact Dolby for Vision tools, so the launch-era platform list should not be treated as a current compatibility matrix. Dolby Gaming provides the current contact route.
What the Dolby Atmos plug-in does
Atmos is the audio integration. Object-based audio lets sound sources be positioned and moved in three-dimensional space; the aim is to make directional and height cues part of the mix rather than simply adding more conventional speaker channels. Dolby describes the Unreal plug-in as an integration with the editor’s audio workflow and says a single Atmos mix can be adapted to compatible platforms. That is Dolby’s workflow claim: it does not mean every platform uses the same plug-in or produces identical output.

Dolby’s launch announcement listed Android, Windows 10/11, and Xbox One or newer for the Atmos plug-in. Its current professional Unreal page instead lists Windows 10/11, Xbox Series X|S, and Android. Those statements differ, so confirm the platform support for the actual package and target build. Dolby’s broader game-audio documentation discusses Atmos across Windows, Xbox, PlayStation 5, iOS, and Android, including middleware routes. That broader ecosystem coverage is not evidence that the native Unreal plug-in itself supports every one of those platforms. Launch details, current Unreal plug-in information, and Dolby Atmos documentation distinguish these contexts.
“Native” means the integration is designed to work in Unreal’s development workflow. It does not replace platform audio systems: Dolby’s documentation says PC and Xbox Atmos rendering is handled at the operating-system level from audio passed to Microsoft Spatial Sound. A player also needs a compatible output path to hear Atmos rendering; a Dolby-authored mix does not make every device an Atmos device.

Dolby’s Atmos page says customers can create an account, accept the EULA, and access the plug-in. Dolby’s Vision materials instead direct developers to contact Dolby. The 2023 announcement called both plug-ins free, and Dolby’s Atmos documentation says there are no additional licensing costs to support Atmos in games. That statement is about Atmos game support; it does not establish that all Dolby Vision tools, professional production products, certification, marketing services, or access programs are free. Check the terms for the specific tool and release route. Atmos access information, Dolby Gaming, and Atmos documentation provide the relevant guidance.

- Install at project or engine level as the package instructions specify; enable the plug-in in Unreal’s Plugins panel, restart the editor, and confirm its settings and assets appear.
- Configure audio and HDR output for each target platform separately. Do not assume plug-in activation configures the platform pipeline for you.
- Author and monitor Atmos on an appropriate system. Dolby recommends a 7.1.4-or-greater studio setup during development, particularly for the final mix.
- Test fallback paths: Dolby Vision, HDR10-only, and SDR displays for image output; Atmos-capable systems, stereo headphones, and standard stereo speakers for audio.
- Validate platform submission, logo, and attribution requirements before release. Dolby’s documentation notes that platform-submission and logo requirements apply.
Choose the audio workflow that fits the team
| Approach | Often suits | Trade-off to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Native Unreal Atmos plug-in | Teams already using Unreal’s audio tools, targeting documented platforms, and seeking to avoid a separate middleware project. | It is more closely coupled to Unreal, and the live version and compatibility details need confirmation. |
| Wwise or FMOD | Studios with an established middleware pipeline, advanced authoring or profiling needs, or cross-engine reuse requirements. | Adds a separate audio workflow and dependency; it may be unnecessary for simpler Unreal-only needs. |
Dolby documents Wwise and FMOD as alternative Atmos routes in Unreal and other engines. The choice is less about which route is universally better and more about existing tools, required authoring features, and the precise platform matrix. Dolby’s Atmos documentation describes the middleware options.
When Dolby Vision may not be worth adopting
- Your target audience has limited access to Dolby Vision-capable displays.
- You cannot validate Dolby Vision, HDR10 fallback, and SDR trims on suitable monitoring hardware.
- Your art direction depends on one tightly controlled SDR presentation and the additional HDR pipeline does not serve a clear player benefit.
- Current plug-in access or Unreal compatibility cannot be confirmed for the project’s schedule and target platforms.
Even with the plug-in, teams need to evaluate brightness, tone mapping, color volume, user-interface readability, and non-Dolby fallback. A successful Dolby format path is only one output in a game that may run on many display and audio configurations.
