There is no single gamer verdict on generative AI. A late-2024 MIDiA Research survey found most respondents neutral about AI’s effect on buying a game if the game itself was good. A separate optional Quantic Foundry survey in late 2025 found strongly negative attitudes among its respondents, especially toward AI-generated creative work. The surveys asked different questions of different samples, so neither proves that all players oppose—or welcome—AI in games.
What do gamers think about generative AI in games?
The answer depends on what players were asked. MIDiA Research’s 2024 survey, reported in 2025, measured whether developers’ use of generative AI would influence purchase decisions. Among 6,300 gamers surveyed, 60% said they were neutral as long as the game was good; 20% viewed the use positively and 19% negatively. MIDiA also conducted eight qualitative interviews. MIDiA describes its survey sample as representative of gamers. MIDiA Research’s report provides that purchase-influence framing.
Quantic Foundry’s optional survey, conducted from October through December 2025 alongside its Gamer Motivation Profile, asked about attitudes toward generative AI in video games more broadly. Of 1,799 respondents, 85% expressed a below-neutral attitude, including 63% who selected the most negative response. The sample leaned toward core PC and console players: 90% reported PC gaming, 74% identified as core gamers, and 65% were male. These are descriptions of survey respondents, not a census of all gamers. Quantic Foundry’s findings should be read with that sample and question in mind.
The percentages are not contradictory: one survey measured purchase influence under a “if the game is good” condition; the other measured broader attitudes in an optional, gaming-motivation survey. Their samples and field dates also differ. Neither result should be presented as the definitive view of every player.

Which uses of AI draw the strongest backlash?
In Quantic Foundry’s survey, respondents were more negative about creative uses—artwork, music and sound effects, and narrative or dialogue—than about a systems use such as dynamic difficulty adjustment. For dynamic difficulty adjustment, 26% of respondents were positive and 24% neutral. This is a report of attitudes, not a controlled comparison of games or proof that one use produces a better player experience.
Quantic Foundry also reported associations between stronger Story and Design motivations and more negative attitudes toward generative AI, while Power motivation correlated positively. These are correlations in its respondent data; they do not show that a particular motivation causes a player’s view.

The concern is often not simply that a tool is involved, but what it may replace or how its output was made. In one MIDiA interview, an anonymous US-based male player, age 35 and reporting three hours of play per week, drew a distinction between adding trees to a design and using AI in a way that might cut creative jobs: “Using [generative AI] to add more trees to a design? Cool. But used in any way that potentially cuts jobs? I will not play that game. I am fiercely defensive about creative jobs.” That is one interviewee’s view, not a claim about players generally.
How do developers view AI in the game industry?
Workplace adoption and approval are separate questions. The Game Developers Conference’s 2025 industry survey found that 52% of surveyed developers worked at companies where generative AI tools were used. Yet just 13% said generative AI had a positive impact on the game industry, down from 21% in the 2024 survey; 30% said the impact was negative, up from 18% in 2024. These are developer-survey findings, not a poll of gamers. GDC’s State of the Game Industry report covers the industry survey.

GDC also found that 64% of developers reported their company had some form of internal generative-AI policy, compared with 51% in 2024. Policy adoption indicates that companies are setting rules; it does not establish that developers agree with those rules or that the policies resolve concerns.
In its account of developer concerns, GDC lists intellectual-property theft, energy use, the quality of generated content, bias, and regulatory issues. Some respondents also raised job displacement. These concerns help explain why a tool can be in use at a studio while its broader impact remains controversial.

Can disclosure reduce distrust?
Valve’s Steamworks announcement on January 10, 2024, introduced an AI disclosure section in the game submission survey. Developers were asked to describe AI use in development and in the game’s execution; Valve also described a way for players to report content they believe violates AI-generation guardrails. Valve’s announcement documents that policy at the time. Because it is a dated announcement, check Steam’s current rules for the latest implementation.
Disclosure gives players and platforms a way to identify AI use, but the announcement does not show that disclosure alone eliminates backlash. BCG’s 2025 analysis argues for transparency and curation, and for reinvesting savings into more ambitious creativity. It warns that derivative, low-quality output could burden game stores and undermine trust; those are industry recommendations and analysis, not measured proof that a disclosure practice prevents negative reactions. BCG summarizes its position this way: “AI should expand what games can be, not erode the creative canvas.” BCG’s report also draws on survey material whose cited obstacle data comes from a 2023 survey.
