A moon phase shown in a Rockstar GTA Online update image caught GTA 6 fans’ attention in November 2024—but there is no confirmation that it was meant as a clue. The image’s “Waning Gibbous Moon” label prompted speculation about an announcement; the predicted November timing is long past. Rockstar now says Grand Theft Auto VI is coming November 19, 2026, for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
What was in the screenshot?
Rockstar shared the image with a GTA Online community update. Its “Waning Gibbous Moon” label stood out to fans, who wondered whether the moon phase was a hint about GTA VI. HotHardware reported on the theory on November 20, 2024, citing discussion on Reddit. That reporting establishes the image and the speculation—not Rockstar’s intent. HotHardware’s report
What does “waning gibbous” mean?
It is a real lunar phase, not a term invented for the post. NASA explains that a waning gibbous Moon is between a full moon and a half moon, with its illuminated portion getting smaller. That definition explains what fans saw in the label; it does not establish that Rockstar chose it as a GTA VI message. NASA Space Place’s moon-phase guide
Was it a confirmed GTA VI tease?
No. Fans on Reddit offered both excited and skeptical reactions, but comments show community interpretation rather than developer confirmation. The available reporting does not establish a second, verified explanation for Rockstar’s choice either. The careful conclusion is simply that fans noticed the label and speculated about it. Why did fans connect it to an announcement?
The theory was tied to a specific date, not an open-ended prediction: the Reddit thread suggested the moon phase would occur next on November 17, 2024, and fans wondered whether Rockstar might announce something around then. HotHardware covered that hope on November 20, after the suggested date. It is a historical fan theory, not a current announcement prediction.
At the time, GTA VI had been announced for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S with a 2025 release window. Rockstar’s December 4, 2023 announcement described that window; it is no longer the current schedule. Rockstar’s 2023 announcement via Business Wire
