Valve has not announced Half-Life 3. The renewed buzz through the second half of 2026 rests on three things: a Half-Life: Alyx update tied to Valve’s Steam Frame hardware, datamining and reports about a project called HLX, and an unofficial experiment that runs Alyx on Apple Vision Pro. Each of these is real and recent, but none of them is an official announcement of a new Half-Life game.
What Valve has actually confirmed
Valve’s own announcements cover two things, and neither is a new Half-Life game.

- The Steam Frame update for Alyx (September 14, 2026). Valve’s Half-Life: Alyx announcement says the September update adds standalone gameplay on Steam Frame, including an ARM64/aarch64 port, foveated rendering, and depth reprojection. The post states: “This is a major update that adds support for Steam Frame standalone gameplay.” It describes changes to Alyx only.
- Alyx soundtrack vinyl and CD editions (announced January 27, 2026). Valve announced these physical releases in partnership with Ipecac Recordings. They are franchise collectibles, not a Half-Life 3 product.
Valve has not, in the sources reviewed for this article, attributed a statement about Half-Life 3 to a named spokesperson. Any claim about the next game that circulates without a Valve post behind it should be treated as unofficial.
Why the speculation is growing
The Steam Frame connection
Valve is supporting new hardware, and its flagship VR game just received standalone support on that hardware. That is enough to make fans ask whether a new Half-Life game might accompany the launch. PC Gamer’s September 2026 coverage pointed to a datamined “Frame Alyx Promo” string that could indicate a game bundle, but it labeled that reading as unconfirmed. Its broader argument was that Alyx itself, not a new Half-Life title, may be the notable Steam Frame launch offering. Nothing in the reporting establishes that Steam Frame is tied to a new game.

- Amazing new graphics with pre-rendered cutscenes that look like they came from the movies
- More realistic physics - Objects have varied and appropriate mass, density and physical properties
- Incredibly advanced AI as enemies adapt, plan, improvise, and respond
- Hordes of new aliens and other enemies, plus a plethora of new guns and weapons
The HLX reports
VideoCardz’s September 2026 coverage describes reports and datamining about HLX continuing through 2026, while noting that Valve has not announced Half-Life 3. A July 2026 ComicBook.com report relayed Tyler McVicker’s claim that a Valve game was nearing completion. That report also noted that similar timing predictions from the same source had not come true. Treat this as a source-attributed rumor with a poor track record on timing, not as a release forecast. HLX has not been shown to be Half-Life 3.
The Alyx-on-Vision-Pro experiment
Digital Citizen reported on October 6, 2026 that Half-Life: Alyx reportedly runs standalone on Apple Vision Pro. The account describes an unreleased developer experiment. At the time of reporting, no public guide had been released, and neither Valve nor Apple endorsed the work. It is technically adjacent to Valve’s ARM64 work on Alyx, but it says nothing about whether a new Half-Life game exists.

How much weight each claim can bear
The table below sorts the claims circulating in 2026 by evidence quality. Only the first two rows come from Valve.
| Claim | Source and date | Who is making it | Status |
|---|---|---|---|
| Alyx gains standalone gameplay on Steam Frame, with an ARM64 port | Valve, Half-Life: Alyx announcement, September 14, 2026 | Valve | Official; concerns Alyx only |
| Alyx soundtrack released as vinyl and CD | Valve announcement, January 27, 2026 | Valve, with Ipecac Recordings | Official; product, not a game |
| A “Frame Alyx Promo” string may point to an Alyx bundle | PC Gamer, September 2026 | Datamined string, interpreted by a reporter | Unconfirmed inference |
| HLX is Half-Life 3, or Valve has chosen that title | VideoCardz, September 2026 | Reports and datamining | Not established; Valve has not announced Half-Life 3 |
| A Valve game is nearing completion | ComicBook.com, July 2026, relaying Tyler McVicker | Individual insider | Unverified; earlier timing claims from this source did not come true |
| Alyx runs standalone on Apple Vision Pro | Digital Citizen, October 6, 2026 | Individual developer experiment | Unreleased; not endorsed by Valve or Apple |
