Hollow Knight: Silksong launched on September 4, 2025, and players soon reported trouble opening store pages, completing purchases, and downloading the game on several digital storefronts. The disruption was real but uneven: some people could buy or install it while others encountered errors. Reports linked the timing to the sudden launch-day rush, but no reviewed platform postmortem establishes a technical cause.
What happened when Silksong launched?
When Silksong went live on September 4, players reported problems on Steam, Nintendo eShop, Xbox and Microsoft storefronts, and PlayStation Store or PSN. The symptoms varied by service and user: some could not load a store page or find the game, while others reported cart, checkout, purchase, download, or cloud-sync errors. Ars Technica documented Steam store and checkout trouble as well as disruption to downloads of other games or updates and cloud-save syncing; it also reproduced a Nintendo notice saying eShop network service was unavailable at that time. Ars Technica’s launch-day report described the scope as it unfolded.
Coverage did not describe a uniform outage. GameSpot noted that while many players were having trouble, others could purchase and download the game. MobileSyrup likewise reported that some users could access eShop; it said PlayStation Store appeared to be functioning at the time of its report, though the game then showed an “Add to Wishlist” option. Some Xbox Game Pass users reportedly managed a remote install through Xbox.com. These were snapshots of a changing incident, not guarantees that a particular workaround would work for everyone. Why did Steam and the Nintendo eShop have problems?
The clearest explanation supported by contemporaneous coverage is timing: a large wave of players and would-be buyers arrived as the game became available, and errors were reported across storefront services. The reporting connects the demand and the disruption, but it does not prove that demand was the technical root cause. No reviewed platform operator issued a technical postmortem establishing what failed.

Ars Technica suggested that the absence of pre-purchase and pre-load options may have concentrated activity around release time. That is a possible contributor, not a confirmed explanation. The evidence does not establish a server-capacity shortfall, database bottleneck, denial-of-service attack, or that Team Cherry caused the stores to fail.
How large and how long was the disruption?
Different reports captured different things, so their figures should not be combined into one outage count:

- Steam reports: Ars Technica, citing Downdetector, reported more than 11,000 Steam problem reports in the minutes after release. These were user submissions, not confirmed individual failures.
- Cross-platform reports: The Guardian reported a Downdetector spike of 3,750 shortly after launch and said errors persisted for almost three hours. That figure is not directly comparable to Ars Technica’s Steam-specific count because the platform scope and reporting window differ.
- Player activity: The Guardian said more than 100,000 people were active on Steam within 30 minutes of the game going live. TechSpot later reported a Steam launch-day peak of approximately 535,213 concurrent players. These figures describe player activity, not purchasers or outage severity.
The Guardian’s duration is its characterization of how long errors persisted; it does not mean every storefront was inaccessible to every user for almost three hours. See The Guardian’s September 5 report and TechSpot’s launch summary for their respective figures.

The incident was a temporary, uneven disruption to purchasing and delivery through digital stores, not evidence that every platform was entirely offline. Reports also differed in what users could do: a failed cart or download for one person did not establish that all purchases were blocked, and a workaround reported by some users was not universal.
