Hytale’s developer explained the announced US$20 Standard price by saying the game was unfinished and built on an older version. That was the planned price announced in November 2025, not the current price or a verdict on the game today: Hytale entered early access on January 13, 2026, and the official store listed Standard at US$19.99 when checked October 8, 2026.
Why the developer said Hytale would cost $20
In November 2025, Hypixel Studios co-founder Simon Collins-Laflamme said the planned early-access Standard edition would cost US$20. Engadget reported his explanation: “The game is unfinished and runs on a build from over four years ago. Charging more didn’t feel right. I don’t think the game is good yet.” Engadget’s November 21, 2025 report attributes that judgment to Collins-Laflamme. It was his stated assessment of the game and build at the time—not an independent review finding, and not a claim that every edition would cost $20.

What buying an early-access game means
Hypixel Studios described the January 2026 release as “unpolished and incomplete,” with bugs expected and features still missing. The studio’s January 13 launch announcement said players could explore, build in Creative, use modding support and play multiplayer. It also noted that Adventure Mode, official minigames, the restored default Orbis world generation and social features were not included at launch. That list describes the launch state, not necessarily the game’s full feature set in October 2026.
The store continues to label the game early access and warns that it is actively developed, may contain bugs and can change. It also advises buyers to check system requirements, notes that download and periodic authentication require an internet connection, and says offline play is supported. The store identifies controller support among the accessibility features not yet available. Check its current requirements for supported operating systems and specific hardware before purchasing.

Should you buy Hytale now or wait?
- Consider buying now if you want to try the available Exploration and Creative experiences, are interested in multiplayer or modding, and are comfortable with bugs and an evolving feature set.
- Consider waiting if you want a more complete, polished game or if missing features are important to you. Hypixel Studios said players uncomfortable with unfinished early access can wait.
- Choose an edition by its extras, not assumed gameplay. The store describes higher tiers as adding cosmetics; it does not say they unlock more gameplay.
For multiplayer communities, Hypixel Studios’ November 28, 2025 announcement welcomed server owners. The studio’s launch post also named Blockbench and CurseForge among its modding partners. Those details show intended creator and community support, but they do not establish a particular hosting provider or a requirement to buy extra tools.
