Why I’m Breaking Up With Xbox in 2026

Xbox is not disappearing, but higher console prices, changing Game Pass value and studio upheaval have made me reconsider what the platform offers—and whether my Xbox is still worth keeping.

I’m breaking up with Xbox’s console value proposition—not with Xbox games, and not because the company is disappearing. The reason is that the deal feels harder to trust: hardware has become more expensive, the subscription-and-console bundle is less compelling, and Xbox is reorganizing the studios and strategy that once made its platform feel like a safe long-term bet.

Why leave Xbox now?

It comes down to three questions: what does the hardware cost, what can I play only on Xbox, and how confident am I that the platform will keep delivering the games and services I’m paying for? In 2026, Xbox has made each answer less reassuring.

This is not a claim that Xbox gaming is over. Xbox says more than one billion players use its games each year across console, PC, mobile and streaming, and it is targeting a return to growth in fiscal 2027. It is, however, an admission from the company that its current business needs a reset. In a July 6, 2026 memo, Xbox CEO Asha Sharma wrote, “Our business today is not healthy,” and said Xbox was operating at margins 3–10 times lower than comparable platform and publishing businesses.

Why are Xbox prices going up again?

Xbox announced that, effective August 1, 2026, 512 GB consoles would increase by US$100 and 1 TB models by US$150; it also said the 2 TB model was being sunset. Xbox described Series S as the lowest-cost console in its current lineup. Those are Xbox’s announced US prices and changes, not a guarantee of identical pricing in every region or retailer.

Xbox pointed to rising component costs. In its June 25 announcement, it said storage-component prices had risen more than 2.5 times and that it expected another doubling by fall 2027. A June 10 strategy update forecast that those costs could exceed five times their level two years earlier by the 2027 holiday season. The company’s cost pressures help explain the increase, but they do not make a more expensive console a better deal for the person buying it.

The price change lands amid broader business strain. Xbox has cited a smaller install base, slower-than-expected growth in Game Pass and its multiplatform businesses, studio overexpansion, and platform complexity as reasons for the reset. Its own financial outlook also points to near-term contraction: Microsoft’s FY2026 Q3 outlook projected a low-teens decline in Xbox content and services revenue and a decline in hardware revenue, attributing the services forecast to Game Pass price changes and a strong prior-year content comparison.

What happened to Game Pass?

Game Pass remains a way to access a broad catalogue of games, but the value calculation has changed as subscription prices have changed and the company’s forecast for content and services revenue has weakened. The available figures do not establish a single current subscription price for every tier and region, so the useful comparison is your own expected play: how many games you would otherwise buy, how long you will keep subscribing, and whether the catalogue includes what you actually want to play.

That makes Game Pass less of an automatic reason to stay. If you regularly play several included games, its breadth may still justify the recurring cost. If you subscribe for one release, let months pass without playing, or mainly want a title that leaves the catalogue, paying month after month can be a poor fit. Check the current price and terms for your region before deciding; the 2026 changes make older price assumptions unreliable.

Are Xbox exclusives disappearing?

Xbox is deliberately putting games on more platforms, including PC, mobile and streaming, rather than treating the console as the only destination. That can make Xbox games easier to reach, but it weakens the case for buying a dedicated Xbox solely to play games unavailable elsewhere. Wider availability is good for access; exclusivity is what gives a console a distinct reason to exist.

Xbox has said reliable first-party exclusives remain critical. It has pointed to Gears of War: E-Day in 2026 and Clockwork Revolution in 2027 as returning exclusives. Those are forward-looking parts of its stated pipeline, not proof that the strategy or release cadence has already stabilized.

What does the reset mean for Xbox studios?

The shift is not just a change in messaging. Xbox has acknowledged that its studio expansion became too broad and costly: it said that in a typical year it lost 64 cents for every dollar invested in its expanded studio portfolio. The correction has included layoffs, studio reorganizations and divestitures, all of which make the long-term shape of the first-party catalogue harder to predict.

The documented cuts have come in stages. The Associated Press reported on July 6, 2026, that Microsoft had laid off 4,800 workers, including 1,600 Xbox employees, and that another 1,600 Xbox cuts were expected during the fiscal year. In a September 22 update, Xbox reported 268 additional role eliminations and described studio reorganizations and divestitures. These figures reflect separate announcements at different points in the reset; they should not be treated as a single final tally of all Xbox job losses.

Should I sell my Xbox or keep it?

There is no universal answer. The choice depends on what you value most, and what you would have to buy or give up to switch. Use the priorities below to decide whether your current console still earns its place.

What matters most Why staying may fit Why leaving may fit
Lowest upfront hardware cost Xbox describes Series S as the lowest-cost console in its current lineup. Compare the current local price, condition, and required accessories of every alternative before spending to switch; no single cross-platform price comparison is established here.
Games you can play only on the console You want the announced Xbox pipeline, including the titles Xbox identifies as returning exclusives. You prefer games available on multiple platforms and do not need a dedicated Xbox to access them.
Subscription catalogue You play enough games included in Game Pass to make its current regional price worthwhile. You play sporadically or would rather buy specific games than maintain a recurring subscription.
Access across devices You use Xbox’s console, PC, mobile or streaming ecosystem and value that breadth. You mainly want a console experience and do not benefit from Xbox’s wider access strategy.
Confidence in long-term support You are comfortable with a company in the middle of a reset and willing to judge it by what it delivers next. Studio cuts, reorganizations and changing platform priorities make you reluctant to commit more money now.

Before selling, check which games, saves, friends, subscriptions and accessories matter to you, and whether you can use or transfer them on the platform you are considering. If the console already serves your needs, keeping it costs nothing new and avoids replacing a working setup just to make a point. If you are buying hardware now, however, the higher price and less distinct exclusive-game proposition are good reasons to compare alternatives first.

Why might someone stay with Xbox?

There are still solid reasons to keep an Xbox. Game Pass may suit players who use its catalogue consistently; backward compatibility and Xbox social features can make an existing library and friend group valuable; and PC integration, mobile access and streaming serve people who want to move between devices. Series S remains the stated lower-cost entry point within Xbox’s current console line.

Xbox is also investing in the future rather than announcing an end to the platform. Its stated ambition is to return to growth in fiscal 2027, and its announced game pipeline includes named upcoming releases. Those signals matter, but they do not erase the need to judge the platform by its current price, current subscription terms and actual releases—not by promises alone.
