Beldum is hard to catch in Pokémon Sword because its listed capture rate is just 3—a very low base value. That catch difficulty is separate from how often Beldum appears at Snowslide Slope in the Crown Tundra.
Why Beldum takes so many attempts
Serebii and Pokémon Database both list Beldum’s Generation VIII capture rate as 3. Pokémon Database shows a 0.4% catch chance for one specific scenario: Beldum at full HP with an ordinary Poké Ball. That is not a universal probability; the chance can differ with the ball, Beldum’s HP, status, and other battle conditions. Serebii’s Sword and Shield Pokédex entry and Pokémon Database’s Beldum entry list the underlying value.
A capture rate is not a promise about how many balls you will need. The available figures do not establish a reliable ball-by-ball attempt count for every encounter, so a fixed number would be misleading.
Where to find Beldum in Sword
Beldum appears at Snowslide Slope in the Crown Tundra, the southernmost part of the Galar region. The Sword location listing gives encounter levels of 60–65 and includes both random encounters and overworld encounters. Serebii’s Crown Tundra location table lists random-encounter rates of 20–33% across its displayed weather conditions and overworld rates of 14–24%.

Those percentages describe how often Beldum appears, not the likelihood that a ball will catch it once battle begins. Weather and encounter method affect finding one; the capture rate explains why catching one can still be difficult.
Other ways to obtain Beldum
Beldum is listed for both Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield in the Crown Tundra. Serebii also lists transfer or player trade and Max Raid Battles as acquisition routes for Sword and Shield. The low capture rate is therefore not evidence of a Sword-only bug.
