What kind of monkey is Diddy Kong?

The Donkey Kong Country manual focuses on his speed, agility, and ambitions, saying: “He’s fast, agile, and has the heart to be a world class video game hero.” Nintendo’s Donkey Kong Country manual does not name a species. Taken together, the manuals support calling Diddy monkey-like or chimp-like, but not assigning him one definitive real-world primate species.
Why does Diddy look like a monkey?
The available first-party wording describes Diddy’s character and abilities, not the designers’ precise reason for giving him a monkey-like design. It establishes that he is a nimble Kong character; it does not explain the creative decision behind his appearance.

Some accounts claim Diddy was specifically modeled on a spider monkey, but the manuals do not confirm that. Without a direct designer statement or an official source establishing it, “spider monkey” should be treated as an unverified claim, not a settled fact.
Why do the manuals use different descriptions?
The descriptions emphasize different things. Donkey Kong Country presents Diddy as fast, agile, and aspiring to be a hero. Donkey Kong 64 adds the word “chimp” while describing his quickness, courage, and relative lightness compared with Donkey Kong. Neither manual gives a consistent, precise species designation, and the sources do not establish whether “chimp” is meant literally or as informal character wording.
