“Black Ops 3 not working” on Xbox usually means one of three things: the game won’t load or install, it crashes or freezes, or it starts but can’t connect online. Each has a different fix, so identify which one you have before changing anything. For online failures, check the Black Ops III and Xbox service status first, then run the console’s network tests, and only then look at your home network. Activision’s support guidance follows that order. It cannot diagnose your exact fault without your Xbox model and any error code, so note both before you start.
Identify which problem you are having
Activision’s support site separates Black Ops III problems into distinct categories. Matching your symptom to one of them tells you which branch of troubleshooting applies.
| Symptom | Where to start | Network involved? |
|---|---|---|
| “I can’t connect online” | Service status, then Xbox network tests, then home network | Yes |
| “My game crashes or freezes” | The matching Black Ops III category in Activision support, plus Xbox console support | Not by default |
| “My game won’t load or install” | The matching Black Ops III category in Activision support, plus Xbox console support | Not by default |
Write down your console model (Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, or Xbox 360) and the exact wording of any error message. Support staff and the official guides both depend on those details, and the steps below differ by console.
Check the Black Ops III and Xbox service status
If the problem is online play, check service status before touching router settings. Activision directs players to the Black Ops III server-status page first. A platform indicator that is not green, or a posted alert, can mean connectivity problems until the service is restored.

#1 Best Overall
- Players are deployed into a future featuring a new breed of Black Ops soldier
- Combines three unique game modes: Campaign, Multiplayer and Zombies
- Campaign is a cinematic game that can be played solo or with up to 4 players
- Multiplayer features new ways to rank up, customise and gear up for battle
- Zombies delivers an all-new mind-blowing experience with its own narrative
- If you are signed in to your console but cannot connect, check the platform network status page for outages or scheduled maintenance.
- If a service is down or under maintenance, waiting is the correct response. Network changes will not help.
- Status pages change quickly. Check them when you experience the problem rather than relying on any article’s account of them, including this one.
Run the Xbox network tests
If services look normal, the console’s own tests show whether it reports an internet problem or a multiplayer problem. The steps differ by console.
Xbox One
- From the Xbox Home screen, open Settings.
- Select Network, then select Test network connection.
- If the test fails, it may return an error identifying where the connection broke down and offer troubleshooting steps. Record the message.
- Return to Network and select Test multiplayer connection to check for lag, disconnects, and other game-network problems.
Xbox 360
Go to Settings > System > Network Settings and select Test Xbox Live Connection.

Xbox Series X|S
Activision’s connection guide gives menu steps only for Xbox One and Xbox 360. For Series X|S, look under Settings for network and multiplayer connection tests. If you cannot find them, use Xbox’s own support resources, because this guide does not establish a Series X|S path.
Fix the home network if the tests point there
When the console’s tests indicate a local connection problem, Activision suggests these steps in order:
Rank #3
- INTRODUCING A NEW ERA OF BLACK OPS:Call of Duty is a dark, gritty future where a new breed of Black Ops soldier emerges and the lines are blurred between our own humanity and the cutting-edge military robotics that define the future of combat.
- A CALL OF DUTY CAMPAIGN UNLIKE ANYTHING BEFORE IT:Treyarch elevates the Call of Duty social gaming experience by delivering a campaign with the ability to play cooperatively with up to four players online, using the same battle-tested network infrastructure and social systems that support its world-class Multiplayer and Zombies game modes.
- PREPARE FOR A LEVELED-UP MULTIPLAYER With Black Ops III, Treyarch premieres a new momentum-based chained-movement system, allowing players to fluidly move through the environment with finesse, using controlled thrust jumps, slides, and mantling abilities in a multitude of combinations, all while maintaining complete control over your weapon at all times.
- FIGHT THE UNDEAD IN AN ALL-NEW HORROR STORY No Treyarch title would be complete without its signature Zombies offering – a full-game experience with its own distinct storyline right out of the box. Black Ops 3 Zombies is the most immersive and ambitious Call of Duty Zombies to date, with a full XP-based progression system for players that adds depth and re-playability to the engaging gameplay Zombies fans have come to expect.
- Restart the router. This is the first and simplest check.
- Pause bandwidth-heavy activity. Stop other streaming or large downloads on the network while you play.
- Test with a wired Ethernet connection if practical. Activision’s guidance states: “Using a wired connection will allow your system to achieve optimal performance when playing an online game.” The guide is a general connection troubleshooting article, not a promise that a cable fixes every failure.
A wired connection is a diagnostic and reliability step. It cannot repair a service outage, a damaged game installation, a console hardware fault, or an account problem.
Router settings come last
Activision’s guide describes router changes as a later stage. You may need your router’s admin login or help from your internet service provider, so do these only after the earlier checks have failed.
Rank #4
- Disc only. Original case and manual not included. Will come packaged in a generic case.
- This renewed game has been cleaned, tested, and shows minimal wear.
Test UPnP
UPnP (Universal Plug and Play) is the first router test the guide lists. Enable it in your router’s settings, then retest the console connection.
Port forwarding with a static console IP
If UPnP does not resolve the problem, the guide suggests port forwarding. This requires assigning the console a static IP address and forwarding the ports to it.
DMZ (Xbox One)
On Xbox One, the guide lists DMZ as a later test. Remove the console’s static IP from the DMZ setting after testing, so the console is not left exposed to the internet.
If none of these resolves the connection, Activision says to contact your internet service provider.

A game that won’t load or install, or that crashes or freezes, is a separate branch. Do not assume that network troubleshooting will fix it. Use the matching Black Ops III category in Activision support and Xbox’s console support for the symptom you are having. Neither source establishes that reinstalling the game, changing network settings, or buying hardware will fix these symptoms, so follow issue-specific instructions from the official pages.
Quick Recap
What this guidance cannot tell you
- Activision’s connection article is dated November 21, 2019. Menu labels and platform details may have changed since then, so check the console’s current menus against the steps above.
- No active Xbox or Black Ops III outage is documented for today’s date. Check the live status pages.
- Without your console model, the exact symptom, and any error code, no specific cause can be identified.
