Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?
A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Elgato can be “missing” in OBS in two different ways: the device may not appear in the Device list at all, or it may appear there while showing a black preview or “No Signal.” The first points to source setup, driver or operating-system recognition, or another app using the device. The second usually calls for checking the console’s signal, HDMI path, protection settings, or capture mode. The right fix depends on your Elgato model, operating system, and which symptom you see.
First, identify what “not showing up” means
- Elgato is absent from OBS’s Device list: Check that you added the right source, then investigate whether the operating system and driver expose the device to OBS and whether another app has it open.
- Elgato is listed, but the preview is black or says “No Signal”: OBS can see the capture device. Focus on the console or other input, HDMI connections, HDCP where relevant, and whether the incoming resolution and frame rate are supported.
These symptoms need different fixes. Replacing an HDMI cable is unlikely to solve a device that does not appear in the selector; installing a driver will not fix a console that is not outputting a compatible signal.
If Elgato is missing from the Device list
Add the capture device as the right OBS source
- In OBS, find the Sources panel and click +.
- Choose Video Capture Device, then create a source or select an existing one.
- Open the source’s properties and select the Elgato device from the Device list.
OBS documents this source setup in its Video Capture Sources guide. On Windows, OBS needs a device driver that supports DirectShow output. A capture device’s appearance in another app does not by itself establish that OBS can access it through a compatible driver.
Check the driver and operating system for your exact model
Driver instructions are model-specific, so do not assume that every Elgato capture card needs the same driver or setup. For example, Elgato’s instructions for Elgato Video Capture on Windows 10 and 11 explain its product-specific OBS setup and driver steps: Elgato Video Capture — OBS Studio Setup for Windows 10/11. If you own a different model or use another operating system, check that model’s current compatibility and installation guidance instead.

Close apps that may be using the device
Quit other capture software, camera apps, video-conferencing apps, and streaming programs, then restart OBS and check the Device list again. Some capture devices can be accessed by only one program at a time. Elgato describes this conflict and its resolution steps in its “Device is in use by other software” support guide. Elgato’s Multi App feature applies only to supported devices; do not assume it enables simultaneous access for every model.
If OBS lists Elgato but the preview is black or says “No Signal”
Check the console and HDMI path
- Make sure the console or other source is powered on and outputting video.
- Connect the source to the capture card’s HDMI In. On a card with pass-through, connect the display or TV to HDMI Out.
- Reseat the HDMI connections and check that the display is connected to the intended output.
- Check HDCP settings where relevant. Protected output can prevent capture; the available options depend on the source device and the content being played.
Elgato’s No Signal troubleshooting guide covers these checks, supported input formats, and connection-related causes of a blank picture or flicker.

Match OBS to a supported incoming mode
A capture device can be selected in OBS and still produce no picture if the source sends an unsupported resolution or frame rate. In the Video Capture Device properties, try the incoming signal’s resolution and frame rate, or a lower supported mode. OBS explains that incompatible settings can leave a source blank in its Video Capture Sources guide. Elgato also recommends matching the incoming resolution or choosing a lower one in its Incompatible Output Resolution article; that page includes a legacy/end-of-life notice for the related software, so follow current guidance for your particular device where available.
Check USB and cables only when they fit the symptom
For the resolution issue described in Elgato’s guidance, a USB 3.0 port and cable may be required. Elgato also notes that slower HDMI cables can cause black video or flicker with some high-bandwidth modes. These are conditional checks, not proof that a cable is responsible for a missing Device-list entry. Confirm your model’s port and cable requirements before buying anything, and replace a cable only if it is unsuitable, damaged, or missing.

Which details determine the next step?
- Exact Elgato model: Driver, operating-system compatibility, supported input formats, and USB requirements vary by device.
- Operating system: OBS’s Windows device-driver requirement is specifically DirectShow support; instructions for one Windows product do not automatically apply to other platforms or models.
- Where the failure occurs: Missing from the Device list calls for setup, driver/OS recognition, and app-conflict checks. Listed but black calls for signal-path and mode checks.
- Other apps in use: Another program may hold a device that does not support concurrent access.
- Input format: A signal the card cannot capture at its current resolution or frame rate can produce a blank preview even when OBS lists the device.
OBS’s console-capture FAQ also discusses capture devices and UVC compatibility. Because the model and connection are not specified here, there is no single driver, USB, or privacy setting that can be recommended for every Elgato setup.
