Minecraft’s “offline” status can mean the other player isn’t online or joinable, but it can also point to sign-in, privacy, world settings, edition or version compatibility, a console subscription, or a network or service problem. The exact meaning depends on your edition, platform, and which screen shows the status. For Bedrock friend worlds, only online Minecraft friends appear in the Friends tab, and both players must be friends and online at the same time.
First, identify what “offline” means on your screen
Is your friend missing from Bedrock’s Friends tab, marked offline somewhere else, or visible but impossible to join? Those are different symptoms. Note whether you’re playing Java or Bedrock, which device you’re using, and any exact error message. Minecraft’s guidance about who appears in the Friends tab applies specifically to Bedrock; don’t assume every platform uses “offline” the same way.
Check the world or multiplayer session
Bedrock friend world
For a direct join to a Bedrock world, both players need to be Minecraft friends and online at the same time. The host should launch the world and make sure multiplayer is enabled for it. If the host is offline or the world isn’t open for multiplayer, the friend may not be available to join. Minecraft Help explains the online-friend requirement and notes that only online friends appear in the Friends tab.
Bedrock Realm
A Realm works differently from a friend-hosted world: the owner does not have to be online for guests to play. If a Realm appears unavailable, check that you have the right invitation or access and whether there is a service issue rather than waiting for the owner to launch it. Java server
Java players need to join Java-hosted games; Java and Bedrock multiplayer are edition-specific. The available Minecraft guidance does not establish one universal meaning for an “offline” label in every Java server or screen, so use the exact error and the server’s connection instructions to narrow down a failed join.
Verify account sign-in and friend status
On console and mobile, multiplayer requires linking or signing in with a Microsoft account. Confirm that the account you intend to use is signed in and that both players have added each other as Minecraft friends. If sign-in appears stale, use Minecraft Help’s platform-specific sign-out and sign-in reset instructions.

Review multiplayer privacy permissions
Multiplayer can be blocked by account privacy settings even when the account is not a child account. If the error specifically says online multiplayer is blocked because of Microsoft account setup, Minecraft Help says the adult who owns the Microsoft Family Account needs to review the child account’s privacy settings. Follow the child-account multiplayer troubleshooting steps.
Match editions and game versions
Check that both players are using the same compatible edition and have updated to the latest release available to them. Java joins Java games, while Bedrock joins Bedrock games; being online does not make those editions compatible with each other. Check console online-play requirements
Console multiplayer may require an active subscription to the platform’s online service. Minecraft’s requirements page names Xbox Game Pass Core, PlayStation Plus, and Nintendo Switch Online. Platform terms can change, so check the current requirement for your console and account if multiplayer is unavailable.

- Confirm that the device has a working internet connection, or that devices on a local game are on the appropriate LAN.
- If you use custom DNS or port settings, check whether they are interfering with Minecraft’s connection. Minecraft Help flags these as possible sources of multiplayer problems; don’t change router settings blindly.
- Check PlayFab Status and Xbox Live Status for service updates, as recommended by Minecraft Help. A status page can help distinguish a broader outage from a problem limited to your device or account; no live service condition is implied here.
