Why Is FFmpeg Streaming to YouTube but the Video Has No Sound?

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If FFmpeg is sending video to YouTube but viewers hear nothing, check the complete audio path: confirm the source has an audio stream, make sure FFmpeg selects and maps the intended track, verify the encoded audio suits YouTube’s ingestion protocol, then inspect YouTube Live’s stream-health messages. The symptom alone does not identify the cause; the command, input layout, protocol and health message are needed to diagnose a particular stream.

Diagnose the audio path in order

  1. Confirm the source actually contains sound. Check FFmpeg’s input probe output for an audio stream and listen to the source independently. A video file or capture input may have no audio track; sound may instead come from a separate input. YouTube’s Live health diagnostics include a noAudioStream issue when the ingest has no audio stream. YouTube Live encoder settings and stream health
  2. Review audio mapping and disable flags. Look for -an, which disables audio in the output, and for -map options that select video without the intended audio or choose a different track. When a command uses -map, FFmpeg does not automatically select the other streams for that output: the maps determine what is included. With multiple inputs or tracks, identify the intended audio stream and map it explicitly. FFmpeg stream selection
  3. Check FFmpeg’s output stream listing. In the console output, inspect the lines after Stream mapping: and confirm that an audio stream is mapped and emitted. Check its codec, sample rate, channel count and bitrate against the source and the protocol you are using. A mapping line is useful evidence about selection and encoding; it does not establish that the selected track contains audible sound.
  4. Match the audio to YouTube’s ingestion protocol. For RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube accepts AAC or MP3. Its recommended stereo settings are 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps; its 5.1 recommendations are 48 kHz and 384 kbps, with AAC required for 5.1 over RTMP/RTMPS. Treat these as YouTube’s listed recommendations, not proof that a particular input or track is correct. YouTube Live encoder settings
  5. Check whether you are sending RTMP/RTMPS or HLS. Do not assume an RTMP command’s audio choices satisfy HLS requirements. YouTube’s HLS guidance requires AAC single-track audio, with audio and video muxed in M2TS. YouTube HLS ingestion protocol
  6. Use Live Control Room as the next diagnostic. Test with representative audio and video before the event, then monitor stream health and read the specific warnings while streaming. Messages about missing audio, unsupported codecs, multiple audio streams, too many channels, sample-rate problems, or primary/backup mismatches point toward different corrections. Check the command without guessing at stream indexes

First identify the actual inputs and tracks in FFmpeg’s probe and console output. Input indexes and stream indexes depend on the files or devices in your command, so copying a map from another setup can select the wrong audio or none at all. Then verify that the output includes the intended video and audio streams and that the audio encoder is accepted by your chosen YouTube protocol.

For example, an explicit map must name the audio stream you intend to send; a video-only map will not include audio. Conversely, relying on automatic selection can be unsuitable when the intended sound is on a separate input or among several tracks. FFmpeg documents stream selection and its native AAC encoder; if no bitrate is specified for that encoder, its documented default is 128 kbps. That default does not confirm that FFmpeg selected the right source or that the source has audible sound. FFmpeg stream selection · FFmpeg AAC encoder

Interpret YouTube’s audio warnings

  • No audio stream: Confirm that the input contains audio, then check that the output mapping includes it and that -an is absent.
  • Unsupported audio codec: Verify the protocol and encode to a codec it accepts. RTMP/RTMPS accepts AAC or MP3; HLS requires AAC single-track audio.
  • Multiple audio streams or too many channels: Inspect the output stream listing and map only the intended track and channel layout for the stream you are sending.
  • Sample-rate issue: Compare the emitted sample rate with YouTube’s recommended settings for the audio layout: 44.1 kHz stereo or 48 kHz 5.1.
  • Primary/backup mismatch: Check both feeds’ audio configuration and compare the exact health message in Live Control Room rather than treating a silent playback symptom as sufficient diagnosis.

YouTube’s Live diagnostics distinguish these conditions; consult the message shown for your stream rather than assuming every silent stream has the same cause. YouTube Live stream-health messages
