FFmpeg’s concat demuxer plays files in the order of the file entries in the concat script it actually opens. To fix an unexpected sequence, inspect that script first—including any script generated by a playlist tool. YouTube’s ingest settings can affect delivery and stream health, but they do not determine the order of FFmpeg’s local playlist.
1. Check the playlist FFmpeg actually reads
Open the concat script named in your command and compare its entries with the intended playback sequence. Confirm that every path is correct and that there are no omitted or duplicate entries. FFmpeg processes the listed files one after another, so an unexpected order usually points to the list or to how it was generated. See FFmpeg’s concat demuxer documentation.
If a script is generated automatically, inspect the generated file—not just the source playlist or the generator’s settings. A sorting rule, such as alphabetical order, may have rearranged the entries before FFmpeg reads them.
Example of an ordered concat script
If the opening should play first, followed by the main video and then the closing, the list should reflect that order:

2. Validate the concat script’s format and paths
- For automatic format recognition, put
ffconcat version 1.0exactly at the start of the first line. Do not place a byte-order mark or other characters before it. - Use one directive per line, with each media path following a
filedirective. - Check that every path resolves where the FFmpeg process runs. Relative paths are resolved from the process’s working directory, which may differ from the directory containing your playlist.
These checks catch cases where FFmpeg reads a different list than expected or cannot resolve an entry. Consult the concat demuxer documentation for the script format and options.

3. Distinguish playlist order from looping
Order and repeat behavior are separate. The concat demuxer’s loop option is disabled by default. If the stream plays the files in the right sequence but stops at the end, check whether looping is enabled for the concat input. Also confirm that the stream has reached the end of the entries before diagnosing a later repeat as an ordering problem.
Check your installed FFmpeg version and the exact command: input options must be applied to the relevant input, and option placement matters. 4. Check media compatibility and transition timing
A correct list can still produce bad transitions. The concat demuxer expects compatible streams, including matching codecs and time bases. It uses each file’s duration to place the next file’s timestamps; inaccurate duration metadata can cause artifacts or timing problems. That is different from reading entries in the wrong order. FFmpeg documents a duration directive that can override a file’s stored duration: see the concat demuxer documentation.
If the files are incompatible, choose a concatenation method based on whether re-encoding is acceptable and whether the media format supports file-level concatenation. FFmpeg describes three approaches in its FAQ on concatenating video files:

Changing methods by itself does not prove that the ordering problem is fixed; verify the resulting sequence in the actual script and output.

YouTube receives the encoded stream; it does not reorder the local concat list. If the files play in the intended order but the broadcast has ingest or stream-health problems, check delivery settings separately. YouTube’s encoder settings cover supported protocols, video codecs, frame rates, keyframe frequency and bitrate ranges. YouTube recommends a 2-second keyframe frequency, not exceeding 4 seconds; use its current bitrate table for your chosen codec, resolution and frame rate rather than applying a value without knowing the target quality.

Copy the stream URL and stream key from YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room into your encoder. For encrypted ingest, YouTube recommends RTMPS and documents setup on its RTMPS page. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived after they end; that affects long-stream planning, not playlist order. See its live streaming setup instructions.
6. Troubleshoot by symptom
