Garry’s Mod “lag” has three different causes: low render FPS, CPU or simulation stalls, and network delay. Identify which one you are seeing before changing settings. A controlled single-player test, a launch with -noaddons -noworkshop, memory and temperature checks, and Steam file verification usually reveal whether the problem is your PC, an addon, the map, or the server.
Godlike.Host offers hosted Garry's Mod servers with its own game panel, SFTP access and free DDoS protection, if you would rather not host it yourself.
What “lag” means in Garry’s Mod
Use the word precisely, because each type needs a different fix.

Render lag: low FPS or uneven frametimes
Your view feels slow, camera movement is choppy, or the frame rate drops when many effects or objects appear. This is a rendering or hardware-load problem. Lowering texture detail, shadows, reflections, or post-processing can help when the graphics card is the limit.
Simulation lag: the game itself stalls
Physics objects stop and then catch up, tools respond late in a local game, or the whole scene freezes even though your network connection is fine. Large numbers of props and constraints, a busy addon, a saturated CPU, overheating, or exhausted system memory can stall the simulation.

Network lag: delayed multiplayer activity
Other players teleport, actions register late, or you see high ping while a local map runs smoothly. Your frame rate can be normal during network lag. Server tick rate, player count, server workload, routing, and your connection matter more than texture quality.
Start by determining whether the problem also occurs offline. Changing graphics settings cannot repair a remote server that is struggling, and replacing hardware cannot fix a bad route to one server.

Run a controlled test before changing anything
- Launch a simple single-player map. Use a small, uncomplicated map with no large contraption or scripted scene. Record your usual FPS and whether motion is smooth or pauses in bursts.
- Repeat the action that causes the drop. Walk, spawn a few ordinary props, and open the tools you normally use. Note whether the slowdown appears immediately, only after building up objects, or only in a particular area.
- Compare online and offline behavior. If single-player is smooth but one multiplayer server is not, note the server’s player count and your ping before touching graphics settings. If both are slow, continue with the local checks below.
- Watch frametime, not only the FPS average. A high average with regular spikes indicates stutter; a consistently low frame rate indicates sustained rendering or CPU load. Use the performance display or an overlay you already trust, and write down what changes between tests.
This baseline prevents a network problem from being mistaken for a GPU problem and gives you a meaningful comparison after every change.
Test whether addons are responsible
Facepunch’s startup guidance says to try running the game without addons, and its documented test uses two launch options: -noaddons -noworkshop (Facepunch startup support).
- Open Steam and go to Library.
- Right-click Garry’s Mod, choose Properties, and stay on the General tab.
- Put
-noaddons -noworkshopin Launch Options. Keep the hyphens and separate the options with a space. - Start the same map and repeat your controlled test.
If the stutter or drop disappears, an addon or workshop item is the leading suspect. Remove the launch options only after testing, then re-enable content in batches. When a batch brings the problem back, divide that batch and test again until you identify the offender. A newly installed addon should be the first one disabled; Facepunch recommends reporting a reproducible error to its creator.

If the problem remains with both options active, addons are less likely to be the primary cause. Keep the result: it tells you not to spend hours unsubscribing from content that was not involved.
Reduce scene complexity and physics load
The official Garry’s Mod FAQ identifies a computer that cannot handle the game, many spawned props or constraints, and too many addons as common reasons for slow performance (Garry’s Mod FAQ).
Props
Delete surplus props from the affected save and test again. A clean save is useful because it separates a permanently heavy construction from the game installation. If performance returns after clearing the scene, rebuild in smaller groups and avoid leaving unnecessary objects active.
Constraints and physics interactions
Large networks of ropes, welds, thrusters, bearings, and other constraints can make physics work continuously. Remove unused constraints as well as the props they connect, then retest. If a particular contraption causes the stall, save a copy before simplifying it so you can restore your work.
Maps and scripted scenes
A drop confined to one map or one heavily scripted area is not evidence that every map needs lower settings. Compare a simple map with the problem location. If only one environment triggers the issue, report the reproducible map or addon problem rather than replacing hardware first.

Check background programs, CPU speed, and temperature
Close browsers, video encoders, downloaders, overlays, and other demanding programs for one test. Background load can consume CPU time or memory even when Garry’s Mod itself appears unchanged.
During a drop, check CPU utilization, effective CPU frequency, and temperature with your system monitor. Steam’s hardware troubleshooting guidance notes that CPU slowdowns and overheating can produce sudden performance drops and repeated hitches (Steam Support: Troubleshooting Game Performance Issues – Hardware). Improve airflow, clear obstructed vents, and verify that fans are operating if temperatures rise and the CPU frequency falls. Do not treat a temperature limit as an FPS-setting problem.
Run one comparison with background applications closed and the computer at normal temperature. If the issue vanishes, re-open programs one at a time to find the conflict or workload. If it returns only after the system heats up, address cooling rather than applying a permanent graphics compromise.
Check RAM and dedicated VRAM before buying hardware
Steam’s current Garry’s Mod requirements, accessed in 2026, list a 2 GHz processor and 4 GB of RAM as minimums, with a 2.5 GHz processor and 8 GB of RAM recommended. The page lists 1 GB of dedicated video memory minimum and 4 GB dedicated video memory recommended. These are baseline requirements, not a guarantee of a fixed frame rate on every map, addon collection, or server.
Recommended Free Tools
| Resource | Steam minimum | Steam recommended | What to look for during a drop |
|---|---|---|---|
| System RAM | 4 GB | 8 GB | Usage at or near the installed total, disk activity, and hitching as data is moved to storage |
| Dedicated VRAM | 1 GB | 4 GB | Video-memory usage at the card’s limit, texture pop-in, or stutter when entering detailed areas |
| Processor | 2 GHz | 2.5 GHz | One or more CPU cores saturated, reduced effective frequency, or physics-heavy scenes causing stalls |
Steam warns that when the system runs low on memory, the game or Steam may be swapped to disk, causing repeated frame hitches. Confirm this by watching RAM and disk activity during the exact stutter, not by looking at an idle desktop.

If system RAM is exhausted
Close unused applications first; this is free and reversible. If Garry’s Mod repeatedly exhausts RAM and the system swaps, a compatible memory upgrade can be a sensible permanent remedy. Check your motherboard’s supported capacity, memory type, number of slots, and operating-system limits before purchasing. A 16 GB DDR4 kit is relevant only when your system supports DDR4 and monitoring demonstrates that capacity is the constraint.
If VRAM is saturated
Lower texture detail first. Texture resolution is the most direct way to reduce video-memory demand, and the change is easy to reverse. If the problem persists, test shadows, reflections, and post-processing one at a time. A new graphics card is justified only when monitoring consistently shows VRAM saturation and the rest of the system is adequate; confirm power-supply, case, slot, and display compatibility.
Apply graphics changes in a controlled order
Do not change every option at once. Keep a short record of the original value, the test map, and the result so you can undo a change that makes image quality worse without improving performance.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Texture detail: reduce this first when VRAM is full or stutter occurs while loading detailed surfaces.
- Shadows: lower them if the GPU is heavily loaded in scenes with many dynamic lights.
- Reflections: reduce or disable them if reflective surfaces cause a measurable drop.
- Post-processing: test effects individually; keep the ones that do not affect frametime if you value their appearance.
- Retest the same scene: use identical movement and object count. A setting that helps one map may not affect a physics or server bottleneck.
These are diagnostic changes, not a promise of a universal FPS increase. If lowering textures does nothing while RAM is swapping or the CPU is overheating, return the setting and fix the demonstrated bottleneck instead.

- Open Library and right-click Garry’s Mod.
- Select Properties.
- Open Installed Files.
- Choose Verify integrity of game files and wait for the process to finish.
- Restart the game and repeat the controlled test before restoring custom launch options or addons.
Verification is useful for installation problems; it does not remove a deliberately heavy save, repair an overloaded server, or guarantee higher FPS.
When the problem is multiplayer-only
Keep graphics at the baseline while you compare servers. Record your ping, player count, and whether other players also report delays. Test a different server or a private session if possible.

- Your FPS falls while ping stays normal: inspect local addons, scene complexity, CPU, RAM, VRAM, and thermals.

A single-player FPS fix cannot correct server simulation or network delay. Conversely, a server change cannot fix a graphics card that is out of VRAM in every map.
Choose the least expensive fix that matches the evidence
| Option | Best evidence for it | Benefit | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Addon isolation | Performance improves with -noaddons -noworkshop |
Free, fast, and highly diagnostic | Requires batch testing to identify the specific addon |
| Remove props or constraints | Only large saves or contraptions stall | Free and preserves existing hardware | Changes the build and may reduce its complexity |
| Close programs | RAM or CPU usage falls when background apps stop | Immediate and reversible | Does not solve an underlying capacity shortage |
| Lower texture detail | VRAM reaches its limit | Immediate, reversible VRAM relief | Reduces visual detail |
| RAM upgrade | RAM exhaustion and disk swapping recur | Addresses repeated paging permanently | Requires compatibility and installation cost |
| Graphics-card upgrade | VRAM remains saturated after conservative settings | More video-memory headroom | Highest expense; will not fix CPU, RAM, addon, or server limits |
| Cooling repair | Temperature rises while CPU frequency drops | Restores sustained performance and stability | May require cleaning, fan replacement, or case changes |
A practical decision checklist
- If the issue is online-only, compare ping, player count, and another server first.
- If
-noaddons -noworkshopfixes it, re-enable addons in batches and identify the conflicting item. - If deleting props or constraints fixes a local save, simplify that construction instead of changing hardware.
- If RAM is full and disk activity spikes, close programs and investigate a compatible capacity upgrade.
- If VRAM is full, lower texture detail before considering a new GPU.
- If CPU frequency falls as temperature rises, improve cooling and ventilation.
- If files may be damaged, use Steam’s integrity verification.
- Change one graphics or launch setting at a time, keep configuration backups, and revert any command that causes instability.
Community command bundles and multicore presets are not official guarantees of higher FPS. Treat them as experiments only, change one variable at a time, and keep a backup of configuration files. The reliable path is to separate render, simulation, and network symptoms, then fix the resource or content that your measurements actually identify.
