“Limbo” comes from the Latin limbus, meaning a hem, edge, or border. The boundary image became a name for a theological state at the margins of familiar ideas about Heaven and Hell; Dante later made Limbo widely recognizable as the first circle of Hell in his Inferno.
What does limbus mean?
Latin limbus means “hem” or “border”—the edge of a garment or the fringe of something. The Catholic Encyclopedia and the Princeton Dante Project give this sense; Treccani also traces Italian limbo to Latin limbus and records older meanings such as a hem or edge.

The image suggests something lying at a boundary. Theological writers applied the name to a state understood as outside the usual descriptions of Heaven and Hell. That word origin explains the name, not a detailed map of the afterlife or proof of any particular doctrine.
What did “Limbo” mean in Catholic theology?
Traditional Catholic discussion used the term for two distinct ideas. They concerned different groups and were not the same kind of state:

| Term | Who it concerned | How it was described |
|---|---|---|
| Limbus patrum (“Limbo of the Fathers”) | The just who died before Christ’s redemption | A temporary state in which they awaited the beatific vision, according to the traditional account described in the Catholic Encyclopedia. |
| Limbus infantium or limbus puerorum (“Limbo of Infants/Children”) | Unbaptized infants who died without personal sin | A theological theory about their fate; its status is addressed cautiously by the Vatican’s International Theological Commission. |
The distinction matters: one traditional category concerned the just before Christ and was temporary; the other concerned unbaptized infants and remained a theological proposal.
Why is Limbo associated with Dante?
In the Inferno, Dante uses Limbo for the first circle of Hell. The Princeton Dante Project’s Toynbee entry says, “D. gives this name to Circle I of Hell,” identifying “D.” as Dante in context. This literary setting helped make the name familiar, but the poem is not an authoritative statement of Catholic doctrine.

Is the Limbo of Infants official Catholic teaching?
No dogmatic definition established the theory as required Catholic doctrine. In its 2007 document The Hope of Salvation for Infants Who Die Without Being Baptised, the Vatican’s International Theological Commission says the theory “never entered into the dogmatic definitions of the Magisterium” and “remains therefore a possible theological hypothesis.” It also notes that Limbo is not mentioned in the 1992 Catechism of the Catholic Church.
The same document points to theological and liturgical reasons to hope that infants who die without baptism may be saved, while acknowledging that Revelation contains no explicit teaching on the question. This does not mean the Church has declared that all such infants go to Limbo, nor that it has definitively ruled the theory impossible.
