Mending repairs a damaged pickaxe when you collect XP orbs; having the enchantment is not enough by itself. Check that the pickaxe has Mending and is damaged, then collect XP and see whether its durability increases.
How Mending repairs a pickaxe
Minecraft Help describes Mending as repairing an item when you gain XP orbs. Java Edition 1.21’s technical notes likewise describe the repair effect as happening when XP is picked up. Simply holding a Mending pickaxe, waiting, mining without collecting XP, or spending an existing experience level does not create that pickup event.
Mending has a maximum level of 1, according to Minecraft Help’s enchantment guide. You do not need a higher Mending level to make the effect work.
What to check when the pickaxe does not repair
- Make sure the pickaxe is damaged and has Mending. A fully repaired pickaxe has no missing durability to restore. Check its enchantments to confirm Mending is present.
- Collect XP orbs. Pick up XP from a source that produces orbs. The trigger is collecting XP, not merely having experience levels already.
- Temporarily set aside other damaged Mending gear. If you have other damaged Mending items, remove them from your available equipment and try collecting XP again. This is a useful troubleshooting test when the pickaxe does not appear to be receiving the repair, but the official sources cited here do not specify the complete item-selection algorithm or its exact behavior in every edition.
- Check which edition and version you are playing. The general enchantment description is on Minecraft Help; the cited technical explanation is specifically from the Java Edition 1.21 release notes. Do not assume the detailed implementation is identical across older releases and Bedrock Edition.
Use an anvil if you need another repair route
If the pickaxe still will not regain durability, Minecraft’s anvil guide describes alternatives: repair an item with its raw ingredient, combine two matching items, or apply an enchanted book to a tool. See Minecraft’s Taking Inventory: Anvil guide for those operations.
