What does “nether” mean?
The word nether refers to something lower or beneath. The Online Etymology Dictionary’s entry for “nether” traces it to Old English forms including niþera and neoþera, and to older Germanic and Indo-European forms associated with a downward position.
That sense of “below” is why the word suits Minecraft’s strange, hostile, underworld-like dimension. This is a well-supported interpretation of the name, not a confirmed explanation from its developers. The official Minecraft history describes the Nether but does not say that the English word’s etymology was the naming rationale.
When did Minecraft add the Nether?
Minecraft’s official history dates the Nether’s addition to October 2010. It arrived as a map, years before the dimension received the broader set of biomes players know today. Minecraft’s account of the Nether Wastes gives the October 2010 date; its brief history of the Nether also covers the dimension’s place in the game.

Vanilla Minecraft Game Director Agnes Larsson has described the Nether as distinct from the Overworld, saying: “I love that Nether is so different from Overworld. I go to Nether either because I want an extra challenging adventure, or because I want to gather some nice Nether resources.”
Why is the original biome now called Nether Wastes?
The Nether is the name of the dimension, not just one of its biomes. The 2020 Nether Update added other Nether biomes, and Minecraft’s Java Edition release notes say the original biome was renamed Nether Wastes. The release notes are dated 23 June 2020 and use that name for the biome; Minecraft Feedback’s Java Edition Nether Release notes document the change.

So “Nether” remains the place’s name, while “Nether Wastes” distinguishes one biome within it. The word’s historical meaning helps explain why the dimension’s name feels apt, but it does not establish that the fictional dimension is literally located beneath the Overworld.
