Wizards’ 2017 discussion of Mentor decks explains relevant metagame context, but it did not announce Mentor’s restriction. The specific reason and effective date for Mentor’s own restriction are not established by the official sources cited here.
What “restricted” means in Vintage
Wizards’ Vintage list includes Monastery Mentor as a restricted card. Under the Vintage deck-construction rule, a restricted card is limited to one copy across the combined main deck and sideboard. It remains legal; a banned card cannot be played in the format.
What Wizards said about Mentor decks
In an April 24, 2017 Vintage discussion, Wizards described a metagame that had “come to a bit of a standstill” as Monastery Mentor decks faced Workshop decks. The announcement identified free draw spells as a key part of the Mentor strategy: they let the deck cycle through cards without spending mana while producing tokens. Wizards said restricting Gitaxian Probe and Gush would weaken Mentor-based strategies and reduce the impact of Workshop decks’ Sphere of Resistance effects.
Those were the cards Wizards actually restricted in that announcement: Gitaxian Probe and Gush. Mentor appeared as metagame context, not as a card being restricted. The announcement therefore should not be cited as the reason for Mentor’s own restriction.

Why the strategy can build a board quickly
Monastery Mentor’s Oracle text says that whenever you cast a noncreature spell, you create a 1/1 white Monk creature token with prowess. In a deck that casts many spells, that ability can turn spell-casting into both a growing board and an attack clock. This describes how the card can function; it is not a documented explanation from Wizards for restricting it.
What is known about Mentor’s own restriction
The official material cited here confirms Mentor’s present status, but does not establish when the card was restricted or give a specific official rationale for that decision. No statistic or restriction date should be inferred from the 2017 announcement: its stated changes were to Gitaxian Probe and Gush, not Monastery Mentor.
