The “My device is not compatible with Pokémon GO” message has two official explanations: the game app on your phone is unofficial or out of date, or your phone’s operating system is below Niantic’s minimum. Start by installing the latest version of the app from the official store, then check your OS against Niantic’s supported-device list. If both are in order and the message persists, the cause is usually a hardware or configuration issue that Niantic’s requirements do not cover.
What the message means
Niantic’s help article on this message, My device is not compatible with Pokémon GO, names two causes. The first is an installed app that is unofficial or out of date. The second is an operating system that the game does not support. Niantic recommends installing the latest official app from Google Play or the App Store and checking the supported OS versions.
Minimum requirements by platform
Niantic’s Supported Devices page lists the following requirements. When checked on 8 October 2026, the page showed a “Last Updated: 303d” label, meaning it had not been revised for roughly 303 days. Treat these thresholds as the last published values and confirm them on the live page before you act on them.

Cautions that can block a device even when the OS is supported
- Beta operating systems. Niantic warns that the app may not function on beta versions of iOS or Android.
- Tablets. Niantic states the game is not optimized for tablets, and many tablets lack GPS. See the tablet section below.
- Older or lower-end hardware. The map horizon may show a fog background instead of rendering fully. This is a rendering limitation, not by itself proof that the device is unsupported.
- No universal guarantee. Niantic states that, with many device models and configurations across regions, it cannot guarantee that every device meeting its criteria will be able to play.
Step-by-step fix
- Confirm the app is official and current. Open the Google Play Store (Android) or the App Store (iPhone), search for Pokémon GO, and install any available update. Remove any sideloaded or third-party copy of the game, since Niantic names unofficial apps as a cause of this message.
- Check the operating system. On iPhone, go to Settings > General > Software Update. On Android, the path varies by manufacturer but is usually Settings > About phone > Software update. Compare the version with the minimums in the table above.
- Update if your phone can take the update. Install the newest supported OS version. This may resolve an OS-related failure, but only if your phone’s manufacturer or carrier still delivers the update.
- Check location and connection. Confirm GPS and Location Services are turned on and that you have a strong internet connection. Weak connections and network congestion can make GPS unreliable.
- Check for modifications. Rooted Android and jailbroken iPhone devices are not supported. Restoring the device to an unmodified state is the only fix Niantic’s requirements allow.
- Restart the game and the phone, then try again. If the message returns, the device has passed every listed check but still fails.
Tablets and Wi-Fi-only devices
If the device is a tablet, especially a Wi-Fi-only model, check whether it has built-in GPS before anything else. Niantic says many such tablets lack GPS, and the game relies on it to function. Phones with cellular data generally include GPS, but you should still confirm it in the device specifications.

When the device meets the list but still fails
Niantic does not promise compatibility for every model or configuration. If your phone meets the listed OS, RAM, GPS, and connection requirements and still shows the message, the next step is Niantic’s Android or iOS troubleshooting guides, or direct support through the Pokémon GO Help Center. Include the exact device model, OS version, and app version when you contact support.

Do not assume a specific model is compatible. Confirm the exact model and its current OS against Niantic’s live supported-device page before you buy.
