Pointed dripstone grows only when an existing piece hangs beneath a dripstone block with a water source above that block. Growth is slow and random, so verify the setup before concluding it is broken. The more specific checks below come from Minecraft Java snapshot notes; the consulted sources do not establish that every limit also applies to current Bedrock releases.
Check the setup that enables growth
- Start with pointed dripstone. A dripstone block and water do not create pointed dripstone by themselves. An existing piece must hang down from the block for the stalactite to extend.
- Attach it to a dripstone block. Pointed dripstone needs to hang beneath a dripstone block.
- Put a water source above the block. The water source belongs above the dripstone block; the official descriptions do not specify flowing water as a substitute. See Minecraft’s Block of the Week: Dripstone.
If you need the supporting block, four pointed dripstone can be crafted into one dripstone block, according to the same Minecraft article.
Allow for slow, random growth
Even a correctly arranged setup may show no change for a while. Minecraft’s official Java Snapshot 21w16a notes, published April 21, 2021, describe growth as random and very slow: one growth step can take several Minecraft days. Minecraft Wiki’s dripstone farming guide estimates about one block per 100 minutes on average. That is a secondary-source average, not a guaranteed timer.
Make sure the tip is not underwater
In the Java snapshot notes, a stalactite tip inside water will not drip, so it will not trigger growth. For a stalagmite growing upward, a submerged tip will not receive the drops needed for growth. If either tip is underwater, uncover it and check again.

Check the space beneath a stalactite
The Java Snapshot 21w16a notes say a stalactite can grow up to seven blocks long, and stalagmite growth requires a floor or existing stalagmite within ten blocks below it. These are Java snapshot-specific details; the consulted Bedrock source does not confirm that the same limits apply there.
Java and Bedrock version context
Minecraft’s general dripstone article describes the basic water-source and dripstone-block arrangement. The detailed growth conditions above are from Java snapshot 21w16a, not a guarantee of identical behavior in every current edition. The official Bedrock 1.17.0 release notes confirm that pointed dripstone can be placed on ceilings or floors and discuss cauldrons filling beneath water or lava sources, but do not establish parity for the Java growth limits.
