“Screen glitching” can mean flickering, tearing, pixelation, texture problems, a black screen, freezing, crashes, or frame drops—and those symptoms do not all have the same cause. Start by identifying what you see, whether you play on PC or console, and whether it happens immediately or only after a while. Epic Games’ troubleshooting steps differ by platform and symptom, so there is no single fix to try first in every case.
First, identify what the glitch looks like
Use the symptom and timing to choose a troubleshooting path. If the problem started after changing video settings or installing an update, note that too: it may help narrow down what changed.
- Flickering or tearing: Check V-Sync and frame-rate settings on PC.
- Pixelation or poor-looking textures: Start with PC graphics quality, 3D Resolution, and driver checks.
- Black screen, freeze, or crash: On PC, consider the DirectX 12 and Performance Mode branch; on console, check updates and cache.
- Frame drops or stuttering: If you recently changed V-Sync or the frame-rate limit, restore the previous settings and compare.
- Problems that appear only after extended PC play: Check airflow and possible overheating. Epic identifies overheating as a possible factor, not a confirmed diagnosis.
Epic’s graphics troubleshooting guide and visual-bug guide cover different symptoms rather than pointing to one universal cause.
Fix Fortnite screen glitches on PC
1. Check the requirements and simplify graphics
Confirm that your PC meets Fortnite’s minimum system requirements. Then open the game’s Video settings and try a Low quality preset with 3D Resolution set to 100%. If the display improves, raise settings gradually so you can spot which change brings the problem back.

2. Update the graphics driver and check which GPU Fortnite uses
Install the current graphics driver through your GPU manufacturer’s driver channel rather than relying on a third-party driver-updater utility. If your computer has both integrated and dedicated graphics, check that Fortnite is assigned to the high-performance GPU.
3. Try Performance Mode for certain DirectX 12 problems
Epic lists Performance Mode as a possible remedy for some DirectX 12 freezes, crashes, or black screens. It is a troubleshooting option, not a guaranteed fix; if it does not help, return to the other checks rather than assuming the display issue is resolved.
4. Check files and background software for persistent visual bugs
If the issue continues, Epic’s visual-bug sequence is to verify Fortnite’s game files, clear the Epic Games Launcher cache, and try a clean boot with background applications disabled. Reinstall the game only if those steps fail. If none resolves the problem, Epic recommends sending an in-game bug report.

5. Check heat and airflow if the problem develops during play
If Fortnite looks normal at first and glitches only after extended play, inspect the PC’s airflow and vents. Remove dust from fans and airflow areas and use the computer in a well-ventilated space. This timing makes overheating worth checking, but does not prove it is the cause; it will not address a software, monitor, or cable fault by itself. Epic’s low-frame-rate troubleshooting guide also recommends cleaning dust from fans and airflow areas.
Fix Fortnite screen glitches on console
For PlayStation, Xbox, or Nintendo Switch, follow the console branch rather than PC graphics-driver steps. Epic recommends checking game and system updates, clearing the platform cache, power cycling, and reinstalling Fortnite if the problem remains.
- Install any available Fortnite update.
- Install the latest system update for your console.
- Clear the console’s platform cache, then power cycle the console.
- If the glitch continues, reinstall Fortnite.
- Check Epic’s known-issues channels for a newly reported game problem. For persistent device-specific trouble, contact the console manufacturer’s support.
See Epic’s console troubleshooting guidance for its platform-specific instructions.

Check V-Sync and frame-rate settings for tearing or stutter
Epic explains that V-Sync matches Fortnite’s frame rate to the monitor’s refresh rate to minimize screen tearing. If you changed V-Sync or manually set the frame-rate limit and then began seeing stuttering or frame drops, restore the earlier settings and compare. Do not assume that an unlimited frame rate will fix the problem; the result depends on the system and settings.
Epic’s FPS settings guide covers changing a locked or capped frame rate.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsAre black bars on the sides of the screen a glitch?
Not necessarily. In Fortnite competitive modes, Epic says the display is restricted to a 16:9 aspect ratio, so side bars can be expected: “Black bars on the sides of your screen in these modes are expected behavior.” That is different from an unexpected black screen during play, which should be troubleshot according to your platform and symptom.
Epic’s graphics guide explains the competitive-mode aspect-ratio restriction.
