Scheduling a YouTube live stream creates an upcoming event; it does not by itself start the broadcast. For an encoder stream, send the feed to the scheduled event, wait for its preview in Live Control Room, then click Go live. For a webcam stream, open the scheduled event under Manage and select Go Live. If the preview never appears or YouTube reports an encoder error, check eligibility, the encoder destination and stream key, and your network.
First, identify which launch path you are using
An upcoming event and an active broadcast are different things. The steps depend on whether the stream is coming from streaming software or hardware (an encoder) or directly from a webcam.

Check whether the channel is eligible to stream
YouTube’s [live-stream setup guidance](https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/2474026) says a channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. It also says a person must be at least 16 to live stream. These are eligibility checks, not proof that an eligibility issue caused a particular failure; the account’s status and any message shown in Studio matter.

If you are using an encoder, restore the feed to the scheduled event
Make sure the encoder is sending to the right event
- In YouTube Studio, open the Live area and select the upcoming scheduled stream.
- In Live Control Room, check the stream URL and stream key for that event. Confirm that the encoder is configured with those connection details, rather than details for another stream.
- Start the encoder and allow time for YouTube to receive the feed. Look for the preview in Live Control Room.
- Once the preview appears, click Go live to launch the scheduled broadcast.
If there is no preview, the broadcast has not reached the point where you can complete this launch sequence. Check whether the encoder is running and whether its destination URL and key match the scheduled event.
Refresh the stream key when the encoder reports an error
YouTube describes the stream key as the credential and destination pairing that tells an encoder where to send a feed and allows YouTube to accept it. If the encoder shows an error, YouTube’s [stream-key troubleshooting guidance](https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/2853702) recommends copying a stream key from Live Control Room and updating the encoder. If your third-party software signs in to YouTube and does not use a stream key, contact that software provider’s support team instead.

Understand what auto-start does
YouTube’s [stream settings guidance](https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/2907883) says auto-start and auto-stop can let creators start or stop a stream from the encoder when those settings are enabled. They are configuration-dependent; enabling auto-start is not a universal fix for a scheduled stream that has no incoming feed or is not launching in Studio. Follow the scheduled-event workflow and check for the preview and launch control.
If you are using a webcam, launch the scheduled event in Manage
- Open Live Control Room and select Manage.
- Choose the scheduled stream you intend to start.
- Click Go Live.
Opening or scheduling the event alone does not perform this launch action. Use the webcam workflow rather than looking for an encoder preview if you are streaming directly from a webcam.

Prepare the encoder and network before the scheduled time
YouTube recommends setting up an encoder at least 2 hours ahead and starting it at least 15 minutes before the scheduled time; the help page does not state a year for these recommendations. That gives you time to confirm the encoder connects and the preview appears before viewers expect the stream.
- Check the Live Control Room preview and confirm the scheduled event is reachable from your channel and watch pages.
- Leave upload-bandwidth headroom: YouTube recommends 20% above the bandwidth needed for the stream. Network disruptions can interrupt a live feed.
- If the feed does not reach Studio, inspect the encoder’s connection and network before assuming the scheduled event itself is the cause.
These checks are useful preparation, not a guarantee that every connection problem can be prevented.

The exact cause cannot be determined without the error message, streaming method, and encoder configuration. Work through the branch that matches your setup rather than treating the schedule time or an auto-start setting as proof that a broadcast should already be live.
