If your Turtle Beach headset plays sound but does not transmit your voice, the microphone is not necessarily broken. The most common causes are a physical mute state, the wrong Windows or app input device, blocked microphone permissions, an incorrect adapter or connection method, wireless pairing problems, or model-specific firmware issues.
Start with one question: Does Windows detect the Turtle Beach microphone? If it does, test it in Windows before changing drivers. If it does not, focus on the connection, adapter, pairing, jack wiring, or hardware.

Quick diagnosis
| What you see | Most likely cause |
|---|---|
| The microphone is missing from Windows | Incorrect connection, splitter, USB port, wireless transmitter, pairing, driver, or hardware problem |
| The microphone appears, but the input meter does not move | Mute state, permissions, input volume, mic position, firmware, or microphone failure |
| Windows records your voice, but Discord or a game does not | Application input selection, permissions, push-to-talk, or sensitivity settings |
| The mic works through a cable but not wirelessly | Wrong transmitter, adapter, mode, pairing, USB port, Bluetooth profile, or firmware |
| The mic fails on several compatible devices | Likely boom, connector, cable, headset electronics, or transmitter failure |
Follow the branches below in order. Avoid reinstalling drivers or buying a replacement headset until you know whether Windows can receive a microphone signal.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
1. Check the headset’s mute state and microphone connection
Unmute the headset
- On models with a flip-up boom, lower the microphone fully. Raising it commonly activates mute.
- Check the dedicated mute button if your model has one.
- Listen for a mute or unmute tone and check the headset’s indicator light where applicable.
- Remember that the headset can be unmuted while Discord, a game, Windows, or a voice-chat account is still muted.
Controls differ between Stealth, Recon, Atlas, Ear Force, Xbox, and PlayStation models. Do not assume that one Turtle Beach button combination applies to another model. Turtle Beach documents flip-up mute behavior for several Stealth headsets in its Stealth 700 Gen 2 quick-start guide.

Mic monitoring is not proof that the PC is receiving your voice. You may hear yourself through the headset while Windows or an application is using a different input—or receiving no input at all.
Reseat a detachable boom
Power off or disconnect the headset, remove the boom, and firmly reinsert it. Check for the expected click or secure fit. Inspect the connector for debris, bent contacts, looseness, or visible damage. If the boom is removable, test it on another compatible device when possible. Turtle Beach also recommends securely reinserting the boom and testing the headset on another device in its Recon microphone troubleshooting guidance.
2. Test the microphone in Windows 11
Windows 11 is the primary path below. Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025, so its menus may differ and it no longer receives normal Microsoft support.
Allow microphone access
- Open Start > Settings > Privacy & security > Microphone.
- Turn on Microphone access.
- Turn on Let apps access your microphone.
- Turn on Let desktop apps access your microphone.
The desktop-app setting matters for programs such as Discord, games, browsers, and streaming tools, which may not appear as individual switches. Work or school administrators, antivirus products, privacy utilities, and OEM software can also block microphone access.
Select and test the Turtle Beach input
- Open Start > Settings > System > Sound.
- Under Input, select the Turtle Beach microphone—not your laptop, webcam, monitor, or a virtual microphone.
- Open its properties and use Start test.
- Speak normally, select Stop test, and play the recording.
- Raise Input volume if the recording is too quiet.
Microsoft documents this microphone test in its Windows microphone troubleshooting guide.

Interpret the result
- The test works: Windows and the headset are probably functioning; fix the affected application’s input device, permissions, mute, or sensitivity.
- The microphone appears but the meter never moves: check the physical mute, boom position, input volume, connection mode, firmware, and another compatible device.
- The voice is extremely quiet: adjust input volume, move the boom close to your mouth, check for an obstruction, and test for physical damage.
- The microphone does not appear: continue with the connection and detection steps below.
3. Select the microphone in Discord or the game
A working Windows microphone is not automatically the microphone an application uses. Programs can retain an old device or select a webcam, controller, monitor, or virtual mixer instead.
Discord
- Open User Settings > Voice & Video.
- Set Input Device explicitly to the Turtle Beach microphone instead of relying on Default.
- Speak and watch Discord’s input meter.
- Run Discord’s microphone test.
- Check that you are not muted, then review input sensitivity and the active voice profile.
- Fully close and reopen Discord after changing permissions or connecting the headset.
Games and Xbox-related apps
Open the game’s audio or voice-chat settings and select the Turtle Beach microphone if a manual selector is available. Confirm that voice chat is enabled, push-to-talk is configured correctly, and voice-activation thresholds are not too high. Account, parental-control, or platform privacy settings can also block voice chat.

Some games simply use the Windows default input and provide no separate selector. If the Windows test works but only one game fails, do not immediately reinstall headset drivers.
4. Check the connection method
| Connection | Verify | Common mistake |
|---|---|---|
| 3.5 mm analog | Whether the PC has a combined headset jack or separate headphone and microphone jacks | Headphones work, but the microphone contact is not connected |
| USB wired | A data-capable cable, a direct USB port, and the correct Windows input | Using a charge-only cable or unpowered hub |
| 2.4 GHz wireless | The supplied transmitter, PC mode, USB connection, and pairing | Using the wrong dongle or leaving the transmitter in console mode |
| Xbox Wireless | Whether the model requires an Xbox Wireless Adapter for Windows | Assuming every Xbox headset connects directly to every PC |
| Bluetooth | That the headset is connected—not merely remembered—and the correct input profile is selected | Selecting stereo output while the hands-free microphone profile is inactive |
3.5 mm headsets
A single TRRS plug carries headphones and microphone audio together. Many desktop PCs instead have separate headphone and microphone ports, often marked with green and pink symbols. In that case, you may need a TRRS headset splitter. A plug can fit physically while the microphone contact remains electrically disconnected.
Try the headset on another compatible phone, controller, laptop, or PC. If the headset works there, a splitter, jack arrangement, or PC audio input is more likely than a failed boom. Microsoft discusses separate headphone and microphone jacks in its Windows audio troubleshooting guide.

USB headsets and USB adapters
Disconnect the headset and reconnect it directly to another USB port, preferably a port on the PC rather than an unpowered hub. Temporarily disconnect other USB audio devices, then reconnect the Turtle Beach headset after Windows has fully loaded. Confirm that it appears as a separate input device.
A charging cable may power a headset without carrying audio or data. Use the supplied or known data-capable cable when testing or updating firmware.
Wireless transmitters
Use the transmitter intended for your exact model and connect it to the PC. Check for a PC/console switch, confirm that the transmitter is enabled in Windows, and follow the model’s pairing process. Disconnect the transmitter for about 10–30 seconds, reconnect it, and power-cycle the headset.
Platform-specific models are especially important. For example, Turtle Beach says the Stealth 700 Gen 2 Xbox requires an Xbox Wireless Adapter for PC use, sold separately. The headset must be synced to that adapter before Windows can use it as a PC audio device; the adapter is not included with the headset. See the official setup guide.
Other generations and PlayStation models have different requirements. Turtle Beach’s Stealth 700 Gen 2 PlayStation PC guidance, for example, instructs users to select Microphone (Turtle Beach Stealth 700 G2) as the default input after connecting the appropriate transmitter.

Bluetooth
In Settings > Bluetooth & devices, confirm that the headset is paired and connected. Windows may expose separate stereo and hands-free/headset profiles. The profile that provides microphone input can have different quality and behavior from stereo playback.
Bluetooth support and PC microphone behavior vary by Turtle Beach model. Do not assume that a Bluetooth-capable headset is intended to provide the same low-latency gaming experience as its supplied 2.4 GHz transmitter, or that every model supports every Bluetooth PC profile.
5. Check whether Windows detects the device
If the microphone is absent from Settings > System > Sound > Input, also check Settings > System > Sound > More sound settings > Recording. A disabled or disconnected device may appear there.
- Disconnect and reconnect the headset.
- Try another USB port or the correct splitter and jack arrangement.
- Restart Windows.
- For wireless models, reconnect or re-pair the transmitter.
- Open Device Manager and inspect Sound, video and game controllers and Audio inputs and outputs.
- Run Windows’ audio troubleshooter or the Get Help audio troubleshooter.
Device Manager driver work is a later step, not the first response. Record the existing device name, then check the PC manufacturer’s support page before removing or replacing an audio driver. Microsoft’s general audio guide covers device detection, USB ports, troubleshooting, and driver review.
6. Update Turtle Beach firmware
Update firmware after checking mute, Windows detection, permissions, application settings, and the connection method. Firmware tools and support vary by model:
Best Value
- PC Splitter Cable Included
- Lightweight & Comfortable Design
- High-Quality 40mm Speakers
- Crystal Clear Chat
- Convenient In-line Volume & Mic Mute Controls
- Older supported products may use Turtle Beach Audio Hub for Windows or Mac.
- Newer products may use different Turtle Beach software.
- Some wireless updates require both the headset and transmitter to be connected.
- Firmware versions are model-specific; do not install software intended for another Stealth, Recon, Atlas, Ear Force, Xbox, or PlayStation model.
Use the exact model’s official support page and do not disconnect the headset or transmitter during an update. Turtle Beach provides model-specific update instructions for the Stealth 600 Gen 2 Xbox, Stealth 700 Gen 2 PlayStation, and Stealth 700 Gen 2 Xbox.
7. Reset or re-pair only with model-specific instructions
Power the headset off and on, reconnect the transmitter, and follow the official pairing procedure first. A hard reset can clear pairing or custom settings, and the button combination is not universal.
For example, Turtle Beach documents holding Connect + Mode for 30 seconds as a hard reset for the Stealth 600 Gen 2 Xbox. That does not make it a valid reset procedure for Stealth 700, Atlas, Recon, or other models. Use the exact instructions for your headset in Turtle Beach’s official reset guide.
Some wireless headsets can automatically shut down when they detect no game or microphone audio. That behavior is not, by itself, proof that the microphone has failed; Turtle Beach describes this feature in its wireless auto-shutdown documentation.
8. Prove whether the microphone is defective
Use a controlled comparison rather than guessing:
- Run the Windows microphone test.
- Make a short recording in a basic recording app.
- Test the headset on another compatible PC, console, phone, or controller.
- If possible, test a known-working headset on the original PC.
- Compare the results.
| Result | Likely explanation |
|---|---|
| Works in Windows but not Discord | Discord input, permission, mute, or sensitivity setting |
| Fails only in one game | Game voice-chat, push-to-talk, account, or privacy setting |
| Windows sees no mic, but another headset works | Turtle Beach connection, adapter, firmware, or hardware problem |
| Fails on multiple compatible devices | Likely boom, connector, cable, headset electronics, or transmitter failure |
| Works through 3.5 mm but not wirelessly | Wireless transmitter, pairing, adapter, mode, or firmware problem |
| Output works but input does not | Mute, TRRS/splitter wiring, selected input, or microphone hardware |
If a removable boom is the failed part and the headset electronics work, a replacement boom may be sensible—provided that the exact model supports replacement parts. If the headset is under warranty, contact Turtle Beach before opening, modifying, or replacing parts.
When to use an adapter, replacement part, or warranty service
- TRRS splitter: appropriate when a single-plug analog headset is used with a desktop that has separate headphone and microphone jacks.
- USB audio adapter: useful for bypassing a damaged or incompatible analog PC jack, but it cannot repair a defective headset microphone.
- Xbox Wireless Adapter: appropriate only when the exact Xbox headset requires it for PC wireless use.
- Replacement boom or cable: appropriate when the model has a replaceable part and cross-device testing identifies that part as faulty.
- New headset: consider only after checking compatibility, testing another device, and reviewing warranty coverage.
For a microphone that fails across multiple compatible devices after connection, permission, firmware, and pairing checks, use Turtle Beach support and review the company’s warranty information.
Quick Recap
Final checklist
- Lower the boom or disable the headset’s physical mute.
- Reseat a detachable microphone.
- Confirm the correct 3.5 mm splitter, USB data cable, transmitter, or wireless adapter.
- Allow microphone access, app access, and desktop-app access in Windows 11.
- Select the Turtle Beach microphone under Settings > System > Sound > Input.
- Run Windows’ built-in microphone test.
- Select the same microphone in Discord or the game and restart the app.
- Try another USB port, compatible device, or known-working headset.
- Update model-specific firmware, then re-pair if necessary.
- Escalate to support or warranty service if the microphone fails everywhere.
