If your Turtle Beach headset plays game audio but nobody can hear you, start by unmuting and reconnecting the mic, then test it outside the game. The cause is usually a muted or poorly connected microphone, the wrong input device, blocked permissions, a wireless-mode or pairing issue, or a chat setting—not necessarily a broken headset. The steps below help isolate which one applies before you reset or replace anything.

Identify what is failing first

The symptom narrows down the likely cause. In particular, a mic that works in party chat but not a game points to different settings than a mic that produces no input anywhere.

  • Nobody can hear you in any app: Check mute, boom connection, cable or transmitter, selected input, and hardware.
  • It works in one game or chat app but not another: The headset is likely functional; check that app’s input selection, mute, push-to-talk, permissions, and voice-chat settings.
  • The input meter moves, but your voice is very quiet or cuts out: Check input level, microphone position, noise gate, and noise processing.
  • You hear game audio but no chat: Check chat balance and communications routing; master volume does not necessarily control chat volume.
  • You hear your own voice, but others do not: Mic monitoring is local feedback. It does not prove the console, game, or app is sending your voice.
  • It works over Bluetooth but not through the wireless transmitter: Check transmitter pairing, USB connection, selected wireless mode, and model compatibility.
  • It works on one platform but not another, or stopped after an update: Verify the exact model and platform edition, then reselect the input and check pairing or firmware.

Try these quick physical checks

  1. Unmute the mic. Lower a flip-to-mute boom into its active position. On other models, check the headset or inline mute button and its indicator or tone.
  2. Position and reconnect the boom. Place it near the corner of your mouth, not directly against your lips. If detachable, remove and firmly reconnect it; make sure it is in the microphone port, not an audio-only port.
  3. Reseat the connection. For a wired headset, unplug and firmly reconnect the 3.5-mm plug at both ends. If possible, try another compatible controller or cable. For a USB wireless transmitter, connect it directly to the console or computer rather than through a hub.
  4. Charge the headset and check its mode. Confirm it is powered on, using the intended connection mode, and paired with its transmitter or device. A charging-only USB cable may not carry data on some older models, so follow the instructions for your exact headset.
  5. Restart the app and device. After reconnecting, close and reopen the game or chat app. If needed, restart the console or computer and test again.

These checks address common causes without changing software settings or erasing custom configuration. For model-specific cable or firmware instructions, see Turtle Beach’s Phantom PS4 cable and firmware guide.

Test whether the platform receives your voice

Test the microphone outside the game or app that appears to be failing. If a system-level test works but one game does not, focus on that game’s chat settings. If the mic fails across more than one compatible device, investigate the headset, cable, transmitter, or firmware.

Turtle Beach Recon 50 Wired Multiplatform Gaming Headset for PS5, Xbox, PC
  • Lightweight & Comfortable – Play for hours in complete comfort.
  • 40mm Speakers Hear every crisp high and thundering low with these 40mm over-ear speakers.
  • Convenient In-line Controls – Convenient in-line controls place Master Volume and Mic Mute right at your fingertips.
  • Crystal Clear Chat – Turtle Beach’s renowned high-sensitivity mic picks-up your voice loud and clear, and can be removed when watching movies or listening to music.
  • Versatile Compatibility – Works great with PS5, PS4, and PS4 Pro and works great with Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, Xbox One, and PC & Mobile devices with 3.5mm Connection.
  • Windows: Open Settings > System > Sound > Input, select the Turtle Beach microphone, and run Start test. Speak normally, then play the sample back.
  • Xbox: Start a party and look for microphone activity in the party or profile interface.
  • PlayStation: Open the microphone or input controls and watch the input-level meter while speaking.
  • Mobile: Make a short voice recording or test call with the headset connected in the same way you normally use it.

Then test a second app or device. If another headset also fails on the same console or computer, the problem is more likely in that device’s settings, port, account restrictions, or audio system than in the Turtle Beach headset.

Fix a Turtle Beach mic on Windows 10 or 11

Allow microphone access

Windows can block microphone access even when the headset is connected correctly. Microsoft’s microphone troubleshooting guide covers Windows 10 and 11 permissions and input testing.

  1. Windows 11: Open Start > Settings > Privacy & security > Microphone. Turn on Microphone access, Let apps access your microphone, and Let desktop apps access your microphone.
  2. Windows 10: Open Settings > Privacy > Microphone. Turn on device and app access, including desktop-app access where shown.
  3. If only one game or app is affected, check its own microphone permission and input settings too.

Select and test the right input

  1. Open Settings > System > Sound.
  2. Under Input, select the Turtle Beach microphone or headset—not a playback-only device.
  3. Speak and run Start test. Raise the input volume if the recording is too quiet.
  4. In Discord, Steam, the Xbox app, OBS, or a game, select the Turtle Beach microphone explicitly instead of relying on Default.

Some headsets expose separate Windows devices for game audio and chat. Choose the microphone or communications input for recording; a Turtle Beach playback endpoint is not a microphone.

Check classic sound controls and device drivers

If the modern sound page shows input but it is muted or erratic, open Control Panel > Sound > Recording. Set the Turtle Beach microphone as the default device and, if needed, the default communications device. Open Properties > Levels to check its level and mute icon. If the mic is detected but behaves erratically, you can try another format under Advanced.

Only after checking permissions and input selection, right-click Start > Device Manager, expand Sound, video and game controllers, and update the Turtle Beach device or related audio driver. If it is malfunctioning, uninstall it and restart Windows; Windows can reinstall the device. Microsoft also documents restarting Windows Audio and Windows Audio Endpoint Builder for broader sound problems: Fix sound or audio problems in Windows.

Check Discord or another chat app

App labels and layouts can change. In the app’s voice settings, use the input and output device controls rather than assuming a universal menu path.

  • Select the Turtle Beach mic directly as the input and the intended Turtle Beach headset or chat device as the output.
  • Speak and confirm the app’s input meter responds. Check app mute and push-to-talk, including any assigned hotkey.
  • If your voice is too quiet or clipped, check input sensitivity and automatic gain control. Try disabling automatic sensitivity and setting a manual threshold for diagnosis.
  • Close other applications that may be using the microphone, then restart the chat app after changing Windows’ selected input.

Fix a Turtle Beach mic on Xbox

First confirm the headset is the Xbox-compatible edition if the product has platform-specific variants. Similar model names do not guarantee the same transmitter, wireless support, or chat features.

  1. Power on and pair the headset; connect its transmitter directly to the console if the model uses one.
  2. Lower the boom into its active position and check the mute control.
  3. Start Xbox party chat and check for microphone activity. Verify the correct profile is signed in and the headset is assigned to it; review party-chat level and privacy or communication settings.
  4. Test party chat separately from in-game chat. If only one game fails, check its voice-chat, crossplay-communication, and account or parental-control settings.
  5. Check any game/chat balance control. On models with separate chat balance, turning chat fully down can remove chat even while game audio remains audible.
  6. Restart the console fully rather than relying only on sleep or instant resume. If the problem began after a firmware or pairing change, use Turtle Beach’s official support instructions for your exact model.

For the Stealth 600 Gen 2 Xbox specifically, Turtle Beach documents a hard reset by holding Connect + Mode for 30 seconds, followed by firmware updating and a full console reset. Do not use this button combination on other models. The model-specific procedure is at Stealth 600 Gen 2 Xbox: hard reset and firmware update. Turtle Beach’s Audio Hub and firmware instructions explain that the console must fully shut down for this procedure; an immediate return to the dashboard means it did not.

Fix a Turtle Beach mic on PS5 or PS4

  1. Unmute and lower the boom. Check the console’s microphone controls, select the Turtle Beach headset as the input device, and watch the input meter.
  2. Raise the input level if the meter barely responds. Also check the mute control on the DualSense or DualShock controller.
  3. Confirm the headset is connected by a method its exact model supports: USB transmitter, 3.5-mm controller connection, or Bluetooth where available.
  4. Test PlayStation party chat separately from in-game voice chat. If the system meter responds but a game does not, check the game’s voice-chat and routing settings.
  5. If wireless input fails but a supported controller connection works, investigate transmitter pairing, USB port, mode, firmware, or compatibility.

Older wired headsets can have model-specific mode and cable requirements. For example, Turtle Beach’s instructions for older Phantom PS4 models specify a firmware update, PS4 mode, a mobile-device/adapter cable, and Settings > Devices > Audio Devices > Output To Headphones > Chat Audio. This is not a universal PS5 procedure; see the Phantom PS4 support guide only if you have that product family.

Check Switch, Steam Deck, Bluetooth, and mobile compatibility

Do not assume that one headset’s console wireless mode, Bluetooth mode, and microphone support are interchangeable. Compatibility depends on the exact model, platform edition, connection method, and the platform or game’s voice-chat implementation.

  • Some headsets use a 2.4-GHz transmitter for a particular console and Bluetooth for PC or mobile. Bluetooth may support calls or chat without providing the same game/chat controls or low-latency behavior as the transmitter.
  • Nintendo Switch voice chat can depend on the game or a phone-based companion system. Game audio over a connection does not by itself establish that the microphone chat path is supported.
  • For Steam Deck and mobile, check the model’s supported connection and the operating system’s selected input device. Do not infer support from audio playback alone.
  • Turtle Beach notes that selected advanced features available in 2.4-GHz mode may not be supported over Bluetooth. Check the Stealth 600 product information and its setup guide for that family.

For instance, Turtle Beach describes the Stealth 500 Xbox version as using its transmitter for Xbox and Bluetooth for PC and mobile, with Windows connection limitations. Check the selected edition’s product information before treating Bluetooth as a workaround.

Check microphone controls, noise gate, and chat balance

On models with Turtle Beach audio controls or a companion app, check whether the microphone is muted and whether its level or preset is suitable. A noise gate can cut off quiet speech, while noise reduction may suppress a quiet or distant voice. Temporarily lower the gate or processing to diagnose the issue, then adjust it gradually.

Turtle Beach specifically recommends checking the noise-gate setting for certain Stealth 600 Gen 3 and Stealth 700 Gen 3 audio-cutting-out problems. That does not mean every mic dropout is caused by the gate. See Turtle Beach’s audio-cutting-out guidance. Mic monitoring is useful for hearing your own voice, but is not a test of whether other people receive it.

Use Swarm II or Audio Hub only if your model supports it

Turtle Beach has used different utilities across headset generations. Swarm II is for supported newer models and can provide firmware updates and controls such as mic presets, monitoring, noise reduction, and button mapping. Audio Hub applies to many older and some legacy models. Identify the exact headset and platform edition, then use the utility listed on its official support or product page; you generally do not need to install both. Turtle Beach identifies Swarm II support for the newer Stealth 600 family on its product page and provides the Swarm II information and download page.

Update firmware safely

  1. Identify the exact model and platform edition, then download the official utility for that headset.
  2. Charge the headset and connect it as instructed. Use a data-capable cable where required; a charging-only cable may not be suitable.
  3. Do not disconnect the headset or interrupt power during the update. Wait for the utility to report successful completion.
  4. Restart the headset, re-pair it if needed, and test the mic again.

Firmware can resolve some model-specific problems, but it is not a guaranteed fix for a muted mic, blocked permission, or app routing issue. Turtle Beach’s legacy update instructions warn against disconnecting before the utility confirms completion.

Reset only with instructions for your exact headset

Reset combinations vary by model and may erase pairing or custom settings. Use the official instructions for the exact model, and reserve a reset for a headset that is unresponsive or still fails after simpler checks. If the mic works everywhere except one game or app, changing that app’s settings is a better first step than resetting the headset.

When to contact support or consider replacement

A hardware fault becomes more likely if the mic fails on multiple known-compatible devices after you have checked mute, cable, port, input selection, and pairing. Contact Turtle Beach support or check the applicable warranty rather than opening a headset with a lithium battery.

  • The boom is loose, damaged, or cuts out when moved.
  • A second compatible cable or controller does not resolve a wired connection problem.
  • The transmitter is not recognized on multiple USB ports or computers.
  • The headset is not detected by its official utility, or firmware updates repeatedly fail.
  • There is liquid or impact damage, exposed wiring, overheating, or battery swelling.

Use the Turtle Beach support site to find instructions by model, and consult the current warranty page for applicable coverage and requirements. Replace only after testing across compatible devices or identifying a physical fault; a new headset will not fix blocked Windows permissions or an app using the wrong input.
