A villager becomes a farmer when it claims an unclaimed composter. If yours has not, the cause is usually one of five things: the villager is a baby or a nitwit, it has already been traded with, another villager already owns the composter, it cannot reach the block, or, on Bedrock Edition, its village has no bed linked to it. You can check all five in-game without buying or installing anything.
What a farmer job site actually is
The farmer profession is tied to a single block: the composter. A villager does not become a farmer because a composter happens to be nearby. It has to claim that specific block as its job site. This is the most common source of confusion, because a composter placed next to a villager looks like a finished setup even when nothing has been claimed.
Claiming works the same basic way in both editions: a villager looks for a job site it is allowed to use, and once it claims one, the block is taken and that villager’s profession is set. The details differ between Java and Bedrock, covered below.
Step-by-step troubleshooting
Work through these checks in order. Each one rules out a cause before you move to the next, so you do not need to change several things at once.

1. Confirm your edition and game version
Know whether you are playing Java Edition or Bedrock Edition, and note your exact game version (found on the title screen or in the launcher). The two editions do not use identical claim rules, and behaviour can change between releases, so a fix that worked for a friend on another version may not apply to you.
2. Check that the villager is eligible
The villager must be an adult and not a nitwit. Babies cannot take a profession. Nitwits cannot work at a job site at all.
The villager must also be untraded. Once you have traded with a villager, its profession is locked. Placing a composter next to it will not convert it into a farmer. In that case, you need a different villager, or a new one that has never been traded with.

3. Make sure the composter is unclaimed
A composter that another villager has already claimed is unavailable to anyone else. This often happens when a villager nearby took the composter first, which can look like the wrong villager becoming a farmer. The simplest test is to isolate one eligible, untraded adult with one composter and nothing else nearby.
If the villager appears to be claiming a different profession, remove the other job-site blocks in the immediate area. Then place a fresh, available composter for the villager you want.
4. Make sure the villager can reach the block
In Java Edition, the villager must path to within two blocks of the composter to complete its claim. Clear any obstruction between the villager and the block, such as fences, slabs, or a blocked doorway, and confirm the villager can walk there.

Bedrock uses a different discovery method, which is why physical access matters less there. See the table below.
5. On Bedrock, check bed linkage in the village
On Bedrock, a Mojang bug report (MCPE-73804) describes villagers failing to claim job sites unless a villager is linked to a bed, and it states that Bedrock villagers only claim workstations when they are inside a village defined by at least one bed. The report lists several affected versions and is recorded as unresolved, so treat this as a known Bedrock factor to check rather than a guaranteed fix. In practice, make sure at least one villager in the area has a bed it can use, then recheck the composter.

If the earlier checks pass and the villager still does not convert, reduce the setup to a single eligible, untraded adult and a single unclaimed composter. Stay nearby for a while and watch whether the villager claims it. Then check whether another villager has taken the profession instead. Changing one variable at a time shows which factor was responsible.

Java and Bedrock: how the claim rules differ
The Minecraft Wiki’s villager mechanics article describes how each edition searches for and assigns job sites. The table summarises the differences as that reference describes them.
| Factor | Java Edition | Bedrock Edition |
|---|---|---|
| How a villager finds a site | Searches for an unclaimed site within a 48-block sphere while awake | Discovers sites within the village area, using a 16-block radius and four-block height |
| How the claim is completed | Villager paths to the site and completes the claim near the block | Sites are assigned from a shared list, which may not reflect physical access |
| Physical reach required | Must path to within two blocks of the composter | Not stated in the mechanics reference; assignment may not depend on physical access |
| Bed linkage | Not stated as a requirement in the mechanics reference | Villagers claim job sites only within a village defined by at least one bed, per MCPE-73804 |
| Source reliability | Secondary wiki reference; version-sensitive | Secondary wiki reference plus an official issue record; version-sensitive |
The practical lesson is that advice written for one edition can fail in the other. If you watched a Java tutorial and nothing happened on Bedrock, the bed-linkage and assignment differences are the first things to compare.
Background: when job sites were introduced
Villager professions tied to job-site blocks were introduced with the Village & Pillage update. The official Bedrock release notes state: “Villagers can now take on a new profession when near a job site block.” That sentence describes the feature’s intent, but it does not spell out the claiming rules above, which is why the troubleshooting steps matter.
When the checks pass and it still fails
If the villager is an adult, non-nitwit, untraded, has one unclaimed composter within reach, and (on Bedrock) is part of a village with a linked bed, and it still does not convert, the problem is likely version-specific or tied to a world configuration the mechanics reference does not cover. Record your edition, exact game version, and a short description or screenshot showing the villager, any beds, and the composter. That information makes it much easier for the community or a bug tracker to reproduce the problem.
The fix is almost always a check of conditions in your own world, not a purchase. Real-world garden composters are unrelated to the in-game block, so they will not help.
