YouTube Playables makes lightweight games easy to start inside YouTube, but it is not the same kind of offering as Apple Arcade. Apple Games is a discovery and library hub, while Apple Arcade is a paid subscription catalog. The available official figures suggest different scales, but they are dated company claims—not a current, independently audited comparison of game counts or quality.
What is YouTube Playables?
Playables are interactive games and experiences published to YouTube and playable through its apps and website, as Google describes them. You can find them in YouTube rather than installing each game separately.

YouTube lists several ways to discover them: a Playables shelf on Home, the Playables destination reached through Explore, Search, and games saved under the You tab. That puts quick discovery inside a service many people already use, rather than in a dedicated game storefront.
YouTube’s May 28, 2024 launch announcement said, “More than 75 games are now available to play directly on YouTube.” It named titles including Angry Birds Showdown, Words of Wonders, Cut the Rope, Tomb of the Mask, and Trivia Crack. This is a launch-era figure, not a verified current catalog count. YouTube’s announcement is the source for that dated claim.

Can you play YouTube Playables on a phone or computer?
YouTube says Playables do not require additional hardware, software, or game installs. A Wi-Fi connection or data plan is required, and access depends on country availability and device requirements; the phrase “all devices” in YouTube’s general description should not be read as universal support.
- Android: YouTube app version 20.46 or later and Android S or later, subject to the legacy OS and device exceptions listed by YouTube.
- iPhone and iPad: YouTube app version 20.44 or later and iOS 14 or later.
- Web: YouTube lists Chrome, Safari, or Firefox on desktop and mobile web.
Check YouTube’s Playables Help page for the current supported-device details and country availability, which can change.

How does YouTube Playables compare with Apple Arcade?
The key distinction is that Apple Games and Apple Arcade are not interchangeable. Apple Games is a hub for discovering and launching games; Apple Arcade is a subscription catalog within Apple’s gaming ecosystem. Comparing Playables directly with the Apple Games app confuses a collection and discovery interface with a particular source of games.
| Question | YouTube Playables | Apple Games | Apple Arcade |
|---|---|---|---|
| What is it? | Games and experiences playable in YouTube apps and on the web. | A library and discovery hub for games across Apple platforms. | A paid subscription service with a dedicated game catalog. |
| How do you find games? | Home shelf, Explore, Search, and saved games in the You tab. | Past iPhone and iPad App Store downloads, Mac games, recommendations, editorial collections, and Game Center social features. | Browse the Arcade catalog through Apple’s gaming experience. |
| Do you install games? | YouTube says no additional game install is needed. | The hub can launch games; installation and availability depend on the individual game. | Apple presents Arcade as a subscription game catalog; its developer page describes access across supported Apple devices. |
| Ads and in-app purchases | The cited YouTube materials do not establish a uniform monetization policy for every Playable. | The hub itself is not described as a subscription catalog. | Apple says Arcade games are available without ads or in-app purchases. |
Apple introduced the Games app as a way to see previously downloaded iPhone and iPad App Store games and Mac games, receive personalized recommendations, browse editorial selections, and use Game Center features. Compatible controllers can navigate the app and launch into games, but Apple notes controller support applies to select games and can vary by region. See Apple’s Games app announcement and its Apple Games page for the product details.

What do the published game counts show?
Apple has published larger Arcade figures than YouTube’s cited launch-era Playables number, but the numbers do not form a clean current comparison.
| Source and date | Published figure | What it describes |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube, May 28, 2024 | More than 75 games | Games available to play directly on YouTube at the time of the launch announcement. |
| Apple Newsroom, June 2025 | Over 200 games | Apple Arcade catalog, as stated in Apple’s announcement. |
| Apple Developer presentation | Over 250 ad-free games | Apple’s description of Arcade after its six-year mark; not an independent audit. |
| Apple Developer Arcade page, current page statement | Over 200 premium games | Apple’s page also says games and updates are added weekly; the figure may change. |
These are vendor statements from different dates and describe different product scopes. YouTube’s 75-plus figure is from 2024, Apple gives more than one Arcade figure, and no common-method independent count establishes their present catalogs side by side. The figures therefore cannot support a current ratio or prove which service has better games.

Why the “yet” matters: distribution and publishing
Playables’ clearest advantage is low-friction distribution: a player can discover and start a supported game without leaving YouTube to install a separate title. Google describes the experiences as web-based and says they can use standard web technologies such as WebGL and Canvas. That makes Playables a distinct route for games built to run inside YouTube, not simply another subscription library.
Google says developer access is in early access and directs interested developers to an interest form. That is not an open, self-serve publishing route. Apple, by contrast, invites developers to submit unreleased games for Apple Arcade consideration and describes a catalog that includes originals and App Store games. Those different routes shape what each service is trying to provide: YouTube-hosted interactive experiences versus a curated subscription offering. Neither company’s materials establish comparative game quality.
So the headline’s claim is best read as an argument about the breadth and role of the catalogs, not a measured verdict. Apple Arcade has the clearer case as a paid, curated game service; YouTube Playables has the simpler case for immediate play in a video platform. Whether Playables grows into a direct catalog competitor depends on its future selection and developer access, neither of which is established by the current figures cited here.
