Surface dirt, chemical changes in plastic additives, and changes within the plastic itself can all affect its color. Yellowing alone does not show that the Wii is malfunctioning.
Why does a Wii turn yellow?
Plastic discoloration can come from more than one process. ThreeBond Group describes three broad possibilities: dirt adhering to the surface, chemical changes in additives, and aging-related changes in the polymer itself. Its explanation is general plastic guidance, not a diagnosis of Wii consoles.
Surface dirt
Residue or dirt on the surface may make plastic look yellow or discolored. Unlike a change within the material, surface contamination may be removable, though the appearance alone cannot confirm that dirt is the cause.
Changes in additives
Plastic additives can change chemically, and ultraviolet (UV) exposure may contribute to some such changes. The Wii’s specific exterior formulation and additive package are not identified in the Nintendo support material reviewed, so no particular additive can be named as the cause of a given console’s color.

Aging of the plastic itself
ThreeBond explains that oxygen can react with double bonds in ABS resin, changing the polymer structure and causing yellowing. This is a general mechanism for ABS; it does not establish that the Wii shell is ABS. Polymer aging is difficult to reverse.
Is sunlight the reason your Wii turned yellow?
UV exposure can yellow ABS under experimental conditions: a 2020 study in Materials reported increased yellowing and surface degradation in ABS specimens subjected to UVA aging. The study was not conducted on Wii consoles, does not establish the Wii shell’s material, and does not show that sunlight is the only or necessary cause of a yellow Wii.

Sunlight is therefore a reasonable factor to consider, but yellowing does not prove a console sat in direct sun. Dirt, additive changes, and polymer aging are also possible explanations. The pattern or location of discoloration may be informative, but is not enough on its own to identify the cause.
Does yellowing mean the Wii is broken?
No evidence cited here links yellowing by itself to a Wii fault. It is a change in appearance, not proof of a functional problem. If the console also has operating symptoms, assess those separately rather than treating its color as a diagnosis.

Nintendo’s Wii Support page links to manuals and other system information, but does not specify the exterior plastic or explain why an individual Wii has yellowed.

Avoiding sunlight is a sensible general precaution for plastic. ThreeBond cautions that UV can reach objects even in shade, while oxygen exposure cannot be eliminated completely, so yellowing cannot necessarily be prevented.

Cleaning and restoration depend on the cause. Surface dirt is different from chemical or structural aging, and the general discussion of bleach or UV for some additive-related discoloration is not a Wii-specific safety instruction. The sources do not establish a safe, lasting restoration method or a compatible product for the Wii shell. Avoid assuming that a treatment suitable for another plastic is safe for your console.
