Start by checking three things in order: the Wowza source and output are active, the Wowza RTMP target uses the URL and stream key for the YouTube event you intend to use, and YouTube Live Control Room shows an incoming preview. A preview confirms YouTube is receiving the stream; it does not by itself mean the event is live to viewers. Wowza now calls Streaming Cloud Wowza Video, so current instructions and interface labels may use that name.
Check which Wowza product you are using
Wowza says “Wowza Streaming Cloud is now Wowza Video.” Current Streaming Cloud customers retain functionality in the UI and API, though they may see a newer interface. The current procedure below is for Wowza Video’s external service destination—not Wowza Streaming Engine, which has a different Stream Targets workflow.
Wowza’s current YouTube Live guide was updated February 24, 2025. Its current “Stream to YouTube” documentation, updated August 7, 2026, is for Streaming Engine; do not apply that product’s configuration steps or status labels to Wowza Video.
Set up the YouTube destination in Wowza Video
- Prepare the YouTube event. In YouTube Studio, confirm the channel/account is set up to broadcast live, then create or select the intended live event. Open that event’s Stream Settings and note its primary Stream URL and Stream key. The backup URL is optional.
- Add the destination to the intended Wowza output. In Wowza Video, open the live stream and its Components/output list. Select the output rendition you want to send, choose Add external service, and select RTMP. Give the destination a recognizable name.
- Enter the event’s connection details. Put the YouTube primary Stream URL in the URL field and the YouTube Stream key in the stream name field. Follow Wowza’s field-format instruction: omit the
rtmpprefix and trailing slash from URL fields. Leave target username and password blank. If you choose to use YouTube’s backup URL, enter it in the optional backup URL field. - Save and start the stream. Save the target, then start the Wowza source/stream according to your existing workflow. Confirm that the intended output is active and exists.
- Verify receipt in YouTube. Open the same event in YouTube Live Control Room. When YouTube receives the stream, its incoming preview should appear automatically. Once the preview is available, use YouTube’s event controls to begin broadcasting to viewers if you want the event to be live publicly.
Troubleshoot by checkpoint
The official guides describe these checks but do not identify a definitive cause for an individual stream that is missing. Use the last successful checkpoint to narrow what to verify:
