If the Xbox app will not open on Windows 11, treat it first as a Microsoft Store app problem—not automatically as an Xbox console, graphics-driver, or Gaming Services problem. Restart Windows, install updates, update Microsoft Store, repair or reset Xbox, clear the Store cache with wsreset.exe, and reinstall the app in that order. If Microsoft Store also fails, or Xbox is missing entirely, investigate account, region, compatibility, and administrator restrictions.
First, identify what is failing
“Xbox is not opening” can describe several different problems. The symptom helps determine where to start:

| You see “This app can’t open” | Check whether the issue began after System Restore, then reinstall Xbox and run Windows Update. |
| Xbox opens but sign-in fails | Check the Microsoft account, device authorization, and account restrictions. |
| Xbox opens but games will not install or launch | This is a game-installation or Gaming Services problem, not necessarily an Xbox launch problem. |
| Microsoft Store also will not open | Reset the Store cache, update Windows, and check account or device policy restrictions. |
| Xbox is missing from Start or Microsoft Store | Check account, region, compatibility, family settings, and organization policy. |
Also test whether Microsoft Store opens, whether another Store app works, and whether Win + G opens Xbox Game Bar. If only Xbox fails, concentrate on the Xbox package. If several Store apps fail, the underlying Store or Windows app system is more likely involved.
1. Restart Windows 11
Choose Start > Power > Restart. Use Restart explicitly rather than assuming that shutting down and powering on has the same effect in every Windows configuration.

A restart can complete pending app registration, Windows servicing, or Store updates. Test Xbox immediately after Windows starts again.
2. Install pending Windows updates
- Open Start > Settings > Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart when Windows requests it.
Microsoft places Windows updating near the start of its Microsoft Store app troubleshooting sequence. Do not assume that a particular update caused the Xbox problem unless you have matching timing or a Microsoft advisory.
3. Update Microsoft Store
If Microsoft Store opens:
- Open Microsoft Store.
- Select Library.
- Select Get updates.
- Allow Store and related app updates to finish.
- Restart Windows and try Xbox again.
The Xbox app is distributed through Microsoft’s Store ecosystem, so an outdated Store component can matter even when the Xbox package itself appears installed.
4. Repair the Xbox app, then reset it
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Apps > Installed apps.
- Find Xbox.
- Select its three-dot menu and choose Advanced options.
- Select Repair.
- Try opening Xbox.
- If it still fails, return to the same page and select Reset.
Repair is the less disruptive option. Reset is more extensive and can clear the app’s local data and sign-in state, so you may need to sign in again. It does not delete your Microsoft account, Xbox profile, purchases, or cloud saves, but do not assume that every local setting or game-related state will remain unchanged.

Some apps do not expose both options. If Advanced options or Repair is unavailable, continue to the Store-cache and reinstall steps rather than using unofficial PowerShell or registry instructions.
5. Reset the Microsoft Store cache with wsreset.exe
- Press Windows + R.
- Enter
wsreset.exe. - Select OK.
A blank Command Prompt window may appear. Microsoft says it normally closes after about ten seconds and Microsoft Store opens automatically. This resets the Store cache; it does not remove Xbox or reinstall Windows.
If nothing appears, wait briefly, restart Windows, and try opening Microsoft Store manually. Then continue with Xbox repair, reset, or reinstallation. Do not delete arbitrary folders under AppData or WindowsApps as a substitute.
6. Reinstall Xbox from Microsoft Store
- Open Microsoft Store.
- Select Library.
- Find Xbox.
- Select Install or the download icon.
- Wait for installation to complete.
- Restart Windows.
- Open Xbox and sign in.
Reinstalling can repair a damaged or incomplete Store package, but it is not guaranteed to solve every account, policy, or Windows servicing problem. Use Microsoft’s Store and official Microsoft download surfaces; avoid third-party Xbox installers and mirror sites.

If Xbox is missing from Microsoft Store
Search for Xbox in Microsoft Store rather than relying on a Start-menu shortcut. If it still does not appear, check these possibilities:
- Account: Sign in with the intended Microsoft account. Microsoft Store availability can be limited in a local-account session.
- Device authorization: Confirm that the PC is authorized for Microsoft Store apps.
- Region: Store content and Xbox availability vary by country or region.
- Compatibility: The app may not be offered for the device or Windows configuration.
- Family settings: Child or family restrictions can hide or block content.
- Organization policy: A work or school administrator may have disabled Microsoft Store or app installation.
Microsoft documents additional reasons an app may be unavailable in its guidance on finding or installing Store apps. If Microsoft Store itself seems missing, search for it in Start first; it may simply have been unpinned. Microsoft also notes that the Store can be unavailable to local-account users or disabled on managed devices.
Check your Microsoft account and region
Account checks are particularly relevant when Xbox opens but authentication loops, subscriptions are missing, or installation is blocked:
- Make sure Microsoft Store and Xbox are using the intended Microsoft account.
- Confirm that the PC is authorized as a Store device.
- Sign out and back in only as a diagnostic step; it is not a guaranteed launch fix.
- Check whether a child or family account has content restrictions.
- Consider whether the issue began after changing account identity or region.
To view the Windows region, use Start > Settings > Time & language > Language & region > Country or region. Do not change region merely to unlock content. Microsoft says region changes can affect Store content, subscriptions, Game Pass availability, and account funds; Microsoft-account funds do not transfer between regions. Change it only when you have genuinely moved for an extended period, following Microsoft’s region guidance.

If Windows says “This app can’t open”
Pay special attention to timing. Microsoft’s KB5023152 guidance documents cases where MSIX-packaged Windows apps show “This app can’t open,” stop responding, or crash after System Restore.
This does not prove that every Xbox launch failure has that cause. If the error began immediately after System Restore, try launching the app again, reinstall Xbox from Microsoft Store, and run Windows Update. If the problem did not follow System Restore, continue with the general sequence above rather than treating KB5023152 as a universal explanation.

Stop repeating launch fixes when the Xbox window works. A game that will not install, download, update, or launch is a separate category involving the game package, storage location, permissions, account entitlement, or Gaming Services.
Gaming Services may be relevant in some installation failures, but it should not be assumed to be the cause of a generic Xbox-app launch failure. Avoid making package-removal PowerShell commands, registry deletion, or WindowsApps-folder changes the default remedy unless you have a current, verified Microsoft procedure for the exact error.

As a temporary alternative, you may be able to launch an already-installed PC game directly if that game supports it. This does not replace Xbox functionality for Game Pass management, cloud gaming, social features, or Microsoft Store installations.
When to stop troubleshooting and contact support
Escalate to Microsoft Support or Xbox Support when:
- Xbox remains unusable after restart, updates, cache reset, repair/reset, and reinstall.
- Microsoft Store and multiple other Store apps also fail.
- You cannot authenticate or your purchases, subscription, or Game Pass entitlement is missing.
- The PC is managed by a school or employer.
- The problem affects multiple Windows accounts or appears service-wide.
Do not pay for a third-party “Xbox repair” utility before attempting Microsoft’s built-in recovery steps. Paid cleaners, registry tools, VPNs, and remote-support services are poor first fits for a Store-package or account-authorization problem.
What not to do first
- Do not immediately reinstall Gaming Services with an unverified PowerShell script.
- Do not edit the registry or delete protected app-package folders.
- Do not disable Windows security protections wholesale.
- Do not reset Windows before trying app repair, Store-cache reset, and reinstall.
- Do not change region just to bypass availability restrictions.
- Do not download Xbox installers from unofficial sites.
One terminology note: Microsoft’s requirement for Windows 11 version 24H2 or later applies to a separate gaming feature called Xbox mode, not automatically to the ordinary Xbox app. Do not use that requirement to diagnose every Xbox app launch problem.
