The fastest way to open the Steam Client Console is to enter steam://open/console in a browser address bar or the Windows Run dialog, then allow the link to open Steam. The client should display a Console tab or section.
Open the Steam Client Console with steam://open/console
- Start Steam and sign in if necessary.
- Open a browser, or press Windows + R to open the Windows Run dialog.
- Enter
steam://open/consoleexactly as written. - Press Enter and approve the prompt to open the link in Steam, if one appears.
Steam should open or select its Console tab. Using the Run dialog is a useful fallback if a browser searches for the text instead of recognizing it as a Steam link.
Valve documents this protocol method in its Steamworks documentation.
Alternative: use steam://nav/console
If the first protocol does not work, try this alternative in a browser address bar or the Windows Run dialog:
#1 Best Overall
- Compatible with Windows and Android.
- 1000Hz Polling Rate (for 2.4G and wired connection)
- Hall Effect joysticks and Hall triggers. Wear-resistant metal joystick rings.
- Extra R4/L4 bumpers. Custom button mapping without using software. Turbo function.
- Refined bumpers and D-pad. Light but tactile.
steam://nav/console
It serves the same general purpose, although steam://open/console is the clearest first method to try.
Start Steam with -console
Valve also documents -console as a Steam startup parameter. This method is useful when Steam’s protocol handler is not working or when you want to launch the client with the Console available.
Windows
- Fully exit Steam with Steam > Exit. Closing the window may leave Steam running in the system tray.
- Right-click the Steam shortcut and select Properties.
- On the Shortcut tab, find the Target field.
- Add a space followed by
-consoleafter the quoted executable path.
"C:Program Files (x86)SteamSteam.exe" -console
- Select Apply, then OK.
- Launch Steam using that edited shortcut.
The Steam installation path may differ on your computer. The important detail is that -console appears outside the quotation marks around Steam.exe. Also make sure you launch the edited shortcut rather than a different pinned shortcut or launcher.

Linux
On Linux, launch Steam from a terminal with:
steam -console
The launcher command can vary by distribution or installation method, so the exact command may not be identical everywhere.
macOS
The Steam protocol-link method is the least platform-specific option. Do not assume that Windows shortcut editing or the Linux steam -console command works identically on macOS.

What is the Steam Client Console?
The Steam Client Console is an advanced interface for commands directed at the Steam desktop client and related Steam services. Valve describes it as a place to access additional debugging information and issue Steam client or server commands.
It is different from:
- An in-game developer console: a game-specific interface, such as a console available in some Valve games.
- Steam’s normal interface: the Store, Library, search, and account screens are not the client console.
- Browser developer tools: the Chromium or browser console used to inspect web-based interfaces is a separate tool.
- SteamCMD: Valve’s separate command-line utility for server management, downloads, and automation.
Steam Client Console versus a game console
| Tool | How it is opened | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| Steam Client Console | steam://open/console, steam://nav/console, or Steam’s -console startup parameter |
Steam client diagnostics, app information, and testing functions |
| Game developer console | The individual game’s settings or documented launch options | Game-specific commands and debugging |
| SteamCMD | A separate command-line application | Dedicated servers, downloads, and automation |
Do not put Steam’s -console parameter in a game’s launch options and expect it to open the Steam Client Console. Game launch options are passed to the game, and any console parameter there must be documented by that game’s developer. See Valve’s Steam launch-options guidance.
What can you do in the console?
Most users do not need the client console. Valve’s documented examples include commands such as:
Rank #4
- Multi-Platform PC Gaming Controller: Working with Switch, PC, Android, and iOS devices via Bluetooth, wired, and wireless dongle connections.
- Hall Effect Joysticks: Delivering enhanced recentering performance for smoother control and superior anti-drift capability. Plus, with anti-friction rings.
- 2-Way Trigger Lock: With trigger stops, gamers can toggle between short and long pull positions. Additionally, gamers can activate hair trigger mode by pressing M+LT/RT (triggers must be in the long pull position).
- 1000Hz Polling Rate: This ensures that your inputs are registered almost instantaneously, minimizing lag and maximizing your performance during competitive play.
- Mechanical Circular D-pad: Designed for quick reactions and accuracy in every direction, this D-pad elevates your gaming experience with superior responsiveness.
find <string>
Searches for other console commands.
app_info_print <AppID>
Displays application information supplied by Steam’s servers.
set_spew_level 4 4
Raises diagnostic output verbosity.
log_callbacks <first callbackID> <last callbackID>
Logs callback activity across a specified range.
log_matchmaking_callbacks <0|1>
Enables or disables matchmaking callback logging.
Valve also documents Steam Cloud testing commands such as testappcloudpaths <AppID> and @cloud_testdynamicsyncapp <AppID>. These are developer or testing functions, not general consumer repair commands.
Command availability can depend on the Steam client version, App ID, account access, server-side behavior, or the command’s intended testing environment. A command copied from an old community list may be obsolete or may simply do nothing.

- The six-foot cord lets you lean back and play a comfortable distance from your PC monitor.
Troubleshooting
The link opens a web search
- Use the Windows Run dialog instead of the browser.
- Check that the address is exactly
steam://open/console. - Do not add
https://, quotation marks, or extra spaces. - Confirm that the Steam desktop client is installed.
- Restart Steam and try again.
- Use the
-consolestartup method if the protocol handler is not registered correctly.
The Console tab is missing
Fully exit Steam, then relaunch it with -console. On Windows, verify that the parameter is outside the quoted executable path and that you are using the edited shortcut. Steam must be completely closed before a changed startup parameter can take effect.
A command returns an error or does nothing
The command may be obsolete, mistyped, app-specific, account-dependent, server-side, or intended only for Steamworks testing. Check Valve’s current Steam console documentation and avoid treating unofficial command lists as permanent references.
Using Steam Deck
Steam Deck behavior depends on the mode. Desktop Mode is closer to the regular desktop-client workflow, while Game Mode does not necessarily expose the ordinary client console in the same way. Valve separately documents a CEF debugging console for Steam Deck and Steam Machine development. That is a developer workflow, not a standard end-user replacement for the Steam Client Console.
See Valve’s documentation on the Steam console and CEF debugging workflow.

Opening the console does not unlock games or DLC, bypass ownership checks, grant administrator privileges, or make every Steam command available. Some commands can change client behavior or generate substantial diagnostic logs. Use commands from current Valve documentation, especially when a command references an App ID, package ID, ownership, cloud data, or logging.
The Steam interface and the location of the Console section can change with client updates. The protocol links and startup parameter are the important parts of the procedure; the exact surrounding UI may vary.
