Start by checking which Microsoft account is attached to the Xbox profile and whether it has organizer permissions. The restriction is account-based, so a console fault is not the first assumption.
Check which account and profile you’re changing
Xbox privacy settings belong to the Microsoft account, not just the console. Confirm that the Xbox profile you’re editing is linked to the account you expect, and check that you have selected the right family member if you are managing someone else’s settings. Microsoft provides the settings online as well as through the console: Xbox privacy and online-safety settings.
If the account’s date of birth is wrong and Microsoft is treating an adult account as a child account, use Microsoft’s adult birth-date correction instructions. Do not enter a false birth date to get around family restrictions.
Find out whether a family organizer controls the setting
Microsoft defines family organizers as administrators who can manage family members’ permissions. A family member can be any age, so being an adult does not automatically mean the account has organizer privileges. Check the Microsoft family group’s roles and permissions.

If the affected account is managed as a child account, the family organizer needs to sign in and change that member’s settings. Microsoft’s Xbox purchase-approval instructions illustrate the organizer-managed flow: the organizer signs in, selects family settings, chooses the member, and opens Privacy & online safety.
Try the official settings route
On the console, Microsoft’s example path is Profile & system > Settings > Account > Family settings > Manage family members > select the member > Privacy & online safety. Menu wording can differ with console software and account context. You can also try the Xbox privacy and online-safety page in a browser while signed in to the relevant Microsoft account.

If settings are greyed out or keep reverting
- Make sure the organizer account is signed in if the setting is managed by a family organizer.
- Confirm that you selected the intended member and that the affected account appears correctly in the family group.
- Check whether the issue is an unavailable setting or a birth-date classification problem; they require different fixes.
- If a change appears to save but later reverts, Microsoft’s guidance does not establish a universal waiting period or guarantee a self-service fix. Avoid relying on an arbitrary wait, another account, or repeated sign-ins as a promised solution.
Contact Microsoft if you still cannot change it
If the profile, birth date, and family role all look correct but the setting remains inaccessible, use the support route linked from Microsoft’s Family Safety setup page: describe the problem, select Get Help, and then Contact Support if needed. Microsoft says support agents cannot access or change account details, so any account corrections still need to be completed through the account tools.
