If Pokémon GO says your phone is not compatible, the usual causes are an unofficial or outdated copy of the app, an Android version below Niantic’s current floor, or a 32-bit processor. Niantic’s published Android requirements are Android 9 or newer, at least 2 GB of RAM, GPS and Location Services, a strong internet connection, and an unrooted device. Meeting that list is necessary but does not guarantee the game will run on every model or in every region.
What the message means
The error text reads “My device is not compatible with Pokémon GO,” and Niantic’s help article explains it as a catch-all. The article lists the common triggers: an unofficial or out-of-date version of the app, an operating system that is no longer supported, and a device that Niantic no longer supports because of its processor architecture. The first thing to check is therefore the app and the Android version. Hardware is the last thing to rule in or out, because it takes the longest to change.
Niantic’s current Android requirements
The Pokémon GO Help Center page titled “Supported Devices” lists the following criteria for Android. Treat them as the minimum to meet, not a certification.
| Requirement | Niantic’s published criterion | What it means for you |
|---|---|---|
| Android version | Android 9 or newer | Phones below Android 9 do not meet the floor, even if the hardware is capable. |
| Memory | 2 GB or more RAM | Check the RAM figure in your manufacturer’s specifications; the menu location varies by brand. |
| Processor | 64-bit Android; 32-bit support has ended | A phone can meet the Android version and RAM floors and still be excluded (see below). |
| Location | GPS and Location Services enabled | Turn both on before testing. |
| Connection | A strong internet connection | Weak mobile or Wi-Fi signal can cause loading problems that look like compatibility problems. |
| Device state | Rooted devices are not supported | Rooting removes eligibility; the page does not describe a path back. |
| Preferred display | 720 x 1280 pixel resolution (listed as preferred) | Presented as a preference, not a stated minimum. |
Niantic also warns that beta Android builds may not function. If your phone is enrolled in an Android beta program, the beta build is a possible cause, and returning to the stable release is the only fix the help page implies.

- Please note, this device does not support E-SIM; This 4G model is compatible with all GSM networks worldwide outside of the U.S. In the US, ONLY compatible with T-Mobile and their MVNO's (Metro and Standup). It will NOT work with other CDMA carriers, and it is also not compatible with their MVNO (Visible, Xfinity Mobile, US Mobile, Cricket Wireless, etc).
- Compatibility with certain third-party devices and accessibility accessories, including some hearing aids, may vary depending on manufacturer support, Bluetooth protocols, software compatibility, and regional firmware limitations. For additional hearing aid compatibility information, please refer to Samsung’s official support documentation.

Troubleshooting order
Work through these steps in sequence. Most readers find the cause in the first two.
- Confirm the app is the official current version. Open Google Play, search for “Pokémon GO” from Niantic, and select Update if it appears. If the app was installed from an APK file or a third-party site, uninstall it and reinstall from Google Play. On Samsung phones, the Samsung Galaxy Store is the other official distribution channel. Niantic’s incompatibility article names “an unofficial or out of date version of the app” as a direct cause, so this step fixes more cases than any other.
- Check the Android version. Open Settings, then About phone, then Software information or Android version. Menu names differ by manufacturer. If the phone is below Android 9 and cannot update to 9 or newer, it fails the published OS floor.
- Check whether the processor is 32-bit or 64-bit. Ask the device manufacturer, since Niantic itself says users who are unsure should do this. See the 32-bit section below for the examples Niantic gives.
- Check the remaining conditions. Confirm GPS and Location Services are on, the connection is strong, the phone has at least 2 GB of RAM, the phone is not rooted, and it is not running an Android beta.
- Decide whether replacement is the only option. If the phone is confirmed 32-bit, or it cannot run Android 9 or newer, Niantic advises moving to a compatible 64-bit Android device or an iOS device. Save your account login information before you switch, so your progress stays with your account.
The 32-bit change
The 32-bit change is separate from the Android version rule. A phone on a recent Android release can still be excluded if its processor is 32-bit. Niantic’s “Discontinued Support for 32-Bit Android Devices” page says the game ended support for these devices in phases, first through the Samsung Galaxy Store and then through Google Play. The Portuguese-language version of that help page gives the phase dates: March 2025 for the Samsung Galaxy Store and July 2025 for Google Play. Check your regional help page for the timing in your country.

Devices Niantic names as 32-bit
Niantic lists the following as examples. The list is explicitly not exhaustive, so a match confirms a problem, but a missing name does not confirm compatibility.
- Samsung Galaxy S4, S5, Note 3, J2 and J3
- Sony Xperia Z2 and Z3
- First-generation Motorola Moto G
- Google Nexus 6
- LG Fortune and LG Tribute
- OnePlus One
- HTC One (M8)
- ZTE Overture 3
Clues, not proof
Niantic also says most phones made before 2015 are 32-bit, and that 4 GB of RAM or more makes a 64-bit processor highly likely. Use these as a starting point only. Manufacturers’ specifications for your exact model are the reliable check.

Android 8 and older
Niantic’s “Discontinued Support for Android 8” page states that Android 8 support ended with release 0.305 of the game. Affected players need to update the operating system to keep playing. If your phone cannot update past Android 8, the page offers no alternative, so the phone is effectively outside the supported set.
What to do if your phone cannot be made compatible
When the phone fails the Android version or processor check and cannot be updated, the practical choices are the ones Niantic describes: a compatible 64-bit Android phone or an iOS device. When comparing Android models, check five things against the manufacturer’s specifications: the Android version and whether the model still receives updates, 64-bit processor architecture, RAM against the 2 GB floor, GPS and mobile data support, and the exact model and region. These checks reduce the risk of a failed install, but Niantic says it cannot guarantee that every device meeting the criteria will play the game, because device models and configurations vary by region. Confirm the specific model with the manufacturer before you buy.

Why the official wording matters
Niantic’s “Supported Devices” page states: “We cannot guarantee device support: With many device models and configurations available in different regions, we cannot guarantee that every device that meets the criteria above will be able to play the game.” This explains why a phone that passes every listed check can still show the error, and why troubleshooting usually begins with the app and the operating system rather than the hardware.
Because the requirements and rollout dates are set by Niantic and may change, confirm them on the official Pokémon GO Help Center pages before acting on any specific date or version number in this article.
