If PS5 voice chat is not working, first identify whether the problem is with a PlayStation party or a game’s own voice chat. They use different controls. Then check the microphone mute state and input level, the audio output and chat balance, and finally the headset or network. You can test your setup with the DualSense controller’s built-in microphone, so you do not need a headset to begin.
First, identify which voice chat is failing
PS5 party voice chat is managed through Game Base. In-game voice chat is controlled by the individual game, and not every game offers it. If one works and the other does not, focus on the controls for the failing chat rather than changing every audio setting.
- Press the PS button to open the Control Center, then select Game Base.
- Open the voice chat card and check whether you have joined the intended party. An invitation or pending join request is not the same as being in the chat.
- Use the voice chat card to switch between party chat and game chat, where available. If the issue is only in one game, check that game’s instructions or official help for how to start and configure its voice chat.
If other players cannot hear you, check the microphone
The DualSense wireless controller includes a microphone that can be used for voice chat and voice input. It is a convenient way to test whether the issue is your headset or USB microphone rather than the PS5’s chat settings. PlayStation notes that not all devices work with PS5, so check a device’s compatibility with its manufacturer.
Check mute and input settings
- Check the DualSense mute button and its status indicator. If you are using a headset or USB mic, check its physical mute switch and any manufacturer controls too.
- Go to Settings > Sound > Microphone. Select the microphone you intend to use under Input Device.
- Choose Adjust Microphone Level and speak. Check that the meter responds and falls within the on-screen “Good” range.
- Review Microphone Status When Starting Voice Chat or Broadcast. If it is set to Switch to Mute, the PS5 automatically mutes the microphone when a chat begins.
If the input meter does not respond, select the controller microphone or another known-good input and test again. If the alternate input works, the original device, its mute control, or its connection is the likely branch to investigate. Reconnect the device before concluding that it has failed.

If you cannot hear chat, check output and volume controls
A working microphone does not guarantee that chat audio is routed to the device you are listening on. Check the PS5 output settings and the voice chat card before treating this as a network or headset problem.
- Go to Settings > Sound > Audio Output and confirm the intended Output Device.
- Check Output to Headphones and headphone volume.
- Open the Control Center voice chat card. Make sure Mute All is not active, and check the chat audio balance.
- If only one participant is too quiet, select that participant in the voice chat card and adjust their volume.
- If the problem affects only in-game chat, check whether Mute Game Voice Chat is enabled. This control affects game chat audio.
Test the headset or microphone before changing the network
Reconnect the headset or USB microphone and make sure its own mute control is off. Then select it again under Settings > Sound > Microphone > Input Device and see whether the input meter responds. If possible, compare it with the built-in DualSense microphone or another known-good input. This helps distinguish a device or connection fault from a PS5 setting problem without buying new equipment.

If the built-in mic works but an accessory does not, consult the accessory manufacturer’s compatibility and troubleshooting information. Do not assume that a headset that connects physically is supported for every PS5 audio feature.
If party chat drops or the mic icon flashes, troubleshoot connectivity
When party voice chat disconnects or the microphone icon flashes during party chat, PlayStation’s troubleshooting guidance recommends checking the internet connection. If possible, try a wired connection, then restart both the console and the internet equipment.

PlayStation’s Australia voice chat troubleshooting page also lists these router ports: TCP 80, 443, 3478, 3479, 3480 and UDP 3478, 3479, 49152–65535. Port configuration is an advanced step, not a guaranteed fix. Ask your internet service provider for guidance before changing router settings.
When to check service, account, or game settings
If the microphone and output tests work but chat still fails, check PlayStation’s current service status, your account’s communication and privacy settings, and any relevant parental controls. The settings and steps to start in-game chat depend on the specific game, so consult its official help if only that title is affected.
