Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Siege is rated M for Mature 17+ by the ESRB, the North American video game rating board. The rating rests mainly on violence against human enemies, and the ESRB’s descriptors add Blood, Drug Reference, and Strong Language. This article covers Rainbow Six Siege only. “R6” is also used for other games in the Rainbow Six franchise, and the rating records checked here do not address those titles.
What the ESRB rating lists
The ESRB’s rating line for the game reads: “Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Siege is rated M for Mature 17+ by the ESRB with Blood, Drug Reference, Strong Language, and Violence.” Each descriptor points to a specific kind of content:
- Violence: the main driver of the rating, covering gunfire, explosives, and traps used against human opponents.
- Blood: blood-splatter effects that appear during combat.
- Drug Reference: drug imagery, including bags of cocaine that appear in some stages.
- Strong Language: profanity in dialogue, including a strong expletive that the ESRB summary names specifically.
The letter alone does not tell you how intense any of this is. The descriptors do, so they are the part worth reading if you are deciding whether the game suits a particular child or teen.
Why violence drives the M rating
Most of the rating’s weight comes from the way combat is staged and presented. The ESRB summary covers both what characters do and how it looks and sounds.

Lethal force against human enemies
The summary states: “Characters use firearms (e.g., pistols, machine guns, shotguns), explosives, and traps (e.g., electrified barbed wire, robots with tasers) to kill human enemies.” The game is built around team-based attack and defense matches, so this kind of lethal force is the core activity rather than a side element. Traps such as electrified barbed wire and tasing robots are named alongside guns, which is why the rating is not limited to firefights alone.
How the violence is presented
The ESRB also cites the sensory detail: “cries of pain, explosions, realistic gunfire, and blood-splatter effects.” It separately notes violent cutscenes. The combination of realistic weapon sounds, audible injury reactions, and blood effects is what pushes the rating to M rather than a lower category, according to the descriptors the ESRB chose.

Drug references and strong language
The Drug Reference descriptor comes from cocaine imagery, specifically bags of cocaine visible in some stages. The game does not depict drug use as a mechanic; the ESRB records the imagery as a reference that parents may want to know about.
Strong Language comes from dialogue. The ESRB summary cites profanity, including one strong expletive that it names directly. Language is one of four descriptors, so it is a secondary factor compared with combat, but it is listed on its own line for that reason.
Rank #3
- Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Siege X is the undisputed reference in tactical team shooters, where elite strategy and execution triumph.
- Siege X marks the biggest evolution in its history, and deepens the game’s tactical core.
What the rating does not cite
The descriptors listed for the game do not include sexual content, so the M rating should not be explained as being about sexual material. Nothing in the ESRB summary cited here points to that category.
Online features are handled separately. Because players interact with one another, the platform notices matter for a different question: what other people might say or do in the game. The notices are described in the next section.

The two ESRB records differ by platform
The ESRB has separate records for different platform groups, and they do not carry identical notices. The rating line and descriptors quoted above come from the newer-platform record. The older-platform record carries the online notice instead of the interaction and purchase labels.
| ESRB record | Platforms named in the record | Notices listed |
|---|---|---|
| Older-platform record | PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One | “Online Interactions Not Rated by the ESRB” |
| Newer-platform record | PlayStation 5, Stadia, Xbox Series | “Users Interact” and “In-Game Purchases (Includes Random Items)” |
“Online Interactions Not Rated by the ESRB” means that the rating does not assess what players say or do to each other online. The “Users Interact” label says the same thing in different words, and the random-item label tells you that some purchases are randomized. Neither notice changes the M rating or its descriptors.

How to check the copy you plan to buy
- Open the store listing for your exact platform and compare its rating panel with the notices in the table above.
- If the listing shows “Online Interactions Not Rated by the ESRB” rather than “Users Interact,” you are looking at the older-platform record.
- If you live outside North America, check the rating shown in your regional store, because this article only covers the ESRB.
What the evidence establishes
The ESRB rating records consulted for this article were accessed on 2026-10-08. They establish the M for Mature 17+ rating, the four descriptors, the summary of content behind them, and the platform-specific notices. They do not establish how other regional rating boards classify the game, whether every later game update has changed content, or whether every edition is identical. For those points, check the current listing for your edition.
