VALORANT audio can sound muffled, lose certain effects, or change when voice chat starts for different reasons—there is no single fix for every setup. First check the game’s volume levels and output device, then Windows’ mixer and playback device. If you use headphones with spatial audio or a virtual-surround headset, compare the game’s Stereo setting with the configuration your device supports.
Start with VALORANT and Windows audio settings
- In VALORANT’s Audio settings, check that the relevant volume levels are not muted or set too low. Confirm that the selected output is the device you are actually using.
- Open the Windows volume mixer and make sure VALORANT is not muted or unusually quiet. Check that Windows’ default playback device—or the device assigned to the game—is the one you intend to use. Menu labels can vary by Windows version.
- If sound is still wrong, review the playback device’s exclusive-mode setting and disable surround effects that do not match your speaker or headphone setup. Riot lists these among its sound troubleshooting checks in its sound troubleshooting guide.
Compare Stereo with spatial audio
For a clear comparison, test with headphones and change one setting at a time. VALORANT’s default Speaker Configuration is Stereo, a useful baseline. Riot’s Patch 8.0 notes say that third-party spatial audio requires setting VALORANT’s Speaker Configuration to Auto-Detect and enabling Spatial sound for the playback device in Windows. Headset software may also control spatialization, so check its settings as well.
HRTF and spatial audio are designed for headphones. Riot advises turning them off when listening through speakers; mono playback does not use these headphone spatial techniques. Spatial processing is not automatically clearer for every listener: HRTF models approximate anatomical sound cues, and a model that does not suit you may make it harder to tell whether a sound is in front of or behind you.

Missing sounds on a USB virtual-surround headset
Some USB virtual 7.1 headsets rely on the manufacturer’s software and drivers to mix multichannel audio correctly for headphones. Riot says that, if Auto-Detect is selected while spatial audio is not active and the required drivers are missing, a headset may present as 5.1 or 7.1 without properly mixing those channels down to headphone stereo. The result can be silent center or surround sounds.

- As a quick test, switch VALORANT to Stereo or enable Windows spatial audio.
- For the headset’s intended configuration, install or update its manufacturer’s audio software and drivers.
- Retest the game after changing the setup and listen for the previously missing sounds.
Bluetooth audio glitches when the headset microphone is in use
Riot’s Patch 8.0 notes report that disabling “Hands Free Telephony” for Bluetooth headphones resolved repeated spatialization glitches in its testing. This is a setup-specific workaround, not a guaranteed fix, and it disables the headset’s built-in microphone. If you need voice chat, make sure you have another microphone before trying it.
To find the setting, open the headphones’ Services properties in Devices and Printers and disable Hands Free Telephony. If that does not apply to your device or does not help, restore the setting and return to the other audio checks.

If the problem is voice chat
- Open Settings > Audio > Voice Chat and check the voice chat configuration and selected microphone and output devices.
- Use the loopback test if it is available. Check that the headset and microphone are not muted and that both their physical controls and computer volume are set appropriately.
- Test the microphone and headphones in another audio or video application. If they fail there too, the problem is not limited to VALORANT.

If checking game and Windows output, comparing the relevant audio modes, and addressing any headset-specific driver or microphone issue do not fix the sound, consult Riot’s troubleshooting article or submit a support request. The right next step depends on whether the issue affects game effects, voice chat, or both; an unspecified audio complaint does not identify one universal cause.
