Some Resident Evil releases are rated for adults because they depict graphic horror violence, including blood, gore and serious injuries. But there is no single rating for the whole franchise: the age label depends on the specific game, release and country.
What makes a Resident Evil game rated for adults?
In Australia, Resident Evil Requiem received an R 18+ classification. Its official consumer advice is “High impact horror violence, blood and gore, in-game purchases.” The Australian Classification entry describes graphic violence involving firearms, bladed weapons, chainsaws and improvised weapons, including dismemberments, decapitations and body explosions. It records the classification date as 24 September 2025 and lists PS5 among the media types. Australian Classification: Resident Evil Requiem.

The classification is tied to the content and impact of that release—not simply to the fact that it belongs to Resident Evil. The Australian Classification Board’s 2023–24 annual report gives a separate example: Resident Evil 4 Gold Edition. It says the frequency, intensity and detail of violence—including pervasive blood and gore, injury detail, dismemberment and the ability to inflict post-mortem damage—indicated high impact. In Australia, R 18+ material is legally restricted to adults, and its impact should not exceed high. Australian Classification Board and Review Board Annual Report 2023–2024.
Is every Resident Evil game rated 18?
No. Ratings apply to individual releases and can differ between countries and classification systems. For example, the US ESRB rates Resident Evil Revelations M for Mature 17+, with descriptors for Blood and Gore, Intense Violence and Language. Its summary mentions firearms and knives used against zombies and mutated creatures, blood-splatter effects and some exposed organs. That ESRB rating applies to that game in the United States; it is not a rating for every Resident Evil title or for releases elsewhere. ESRB rating information.

These examples also show why “18+” is not a universal franchise-wide label. Australia’s R 18+ and the ESRB’s M 17+ are distinct local categories. To check a game you are considering, look up its exact title and release in the classification system for your country. If multiple editions or platforms are available, confirm the listing matches the one you intend to play.
What does an 18 rating mean for age suitability?
Age labels and their legal meaning depend on the country and rating system. In the UK, the BBFC says that no one younger than 18 may rent or buy an 18-rated video. That is UK guidance for video works; it should not be treated as a universal rule for video-game ratings worldwide. BBFC: Our Age Ratings.
