Roblox says it is consolidating its avatar technology: the separate Classic Faces and Classic Heads marketplace categories are being replaced by a single Heads category, as the company moves classic faces into its Dynamic Head system. Roblox’s stated aim is to reduce technical complexity and make newer avatar capabilities available across a more unified ecosystem—not to discard the classic look.
Why is Roblox making the change?
In its January 29, 2026 announcement, “Completing the Dynamic Head Migration”, Roblox said the growing complexity of its avatar ecosystem was limiting its ability to deliver new capabilities. The company announced that it would replace the separate “Classic Heads” and “Classic Faces” marketplace categories with one “Heads” category, and that each Classic Face would receive a Dynamic Head counterpart.
This builds on a longer effort to bring Roblox’s avatar systems together. In an October 17, 2023 article, CTO Daniel Sturman explained that Roblox had supported two technology stacks: legacy R6, used by older avatars and experiences, and R15, which supports a wider range of avatar styles and capabilities. Maintaining both could constrain creators and users, and avatars could behave differently in experiences built for another stack. R15 supports features such as facial expressions and lip syncing, while older R6 experiences may not handle newer avatar features seamlessly. Roblox’s explanation of its avatar technology describes the goal as making capabilities available more broadly while preserving compatibility with existing avatars and experiences.
Does this mean classic faces are being deleted?
Not necessarily. The announced marketplace change is the removal of the separate Classic Faces and Classic Heads categories, not a statement that every owner’s face will be erased or that classic-looking faces will disappear. Roblox said Classic Faces would have Dynamic Head counterparts and emphasized the importance of retaining the classic appearance. In a 2023 heads update, the company had also described replacing an equivalent classic face in the shop when introducing an upgraded animated head, so that only one version would be available to purchase. Roblox’s 2023 heads announcement framed that change as adding newer technology while maintaining the classic look.

Will a Dynamic Head look and behave exactly like the classic face?
Roblox has described two safeguards in response to concerns: a control to disable facial animation across Dynamic Heads and a goal of 1:1 visual parity for classic counterparts. Those are announced measures and intentions; the available official material does not establish that every counterpart looks identical in every situation or that the control behaves the same way in every avatar and experience. It also does not establish that migration is complete for every face and user as of October 8, 2026. Check the live Roblox catalog and current official announcement for the status of a specific item. The migration announcement is the relevant source for Roblox’s updates.
What happens to Limited classic faces?
Roblox said it would issue corresponding Limited Dynamic Heads only to people who already owned the related Limited Classic Face, and would not sell additional copies of those Limited Dynamic Heads. That is Roblox’s stated distribution policy; it does not guarantee a future resale price or that an item’s market value will remain unchanged. Roblox’s migration announcement contains the company’s statements about Limited counterparts.

- Animation: Roblox has announced a facial-animation-off control, but its behavior across every item and experience is not established by the available official information.
