Team Cherry says Hornet’s greater speed and skill pushed the team to make even ordinary foes more capable. The developers also intended exploration, learning, and alternate routes to give players ways to manage difficult encounters—but that design aim does not mean every obstacle will feel fair or easy to bypass.
Why did Team Cherry make the enemies so capable?
The developers’ explanation starts with the change in protagonist. Co-director Ari Gibson said Hornet is “inherently faster and more skillful than the Knight,” so even base-level enemies needed to be more complicated and intelligent. In GameSpot’s account of the interview, the team’s approach was to bring enemies up to Hornet’s level rather than make her less capable. GameSpot’s report and Nintendo Life’s coverage describe that rationale.
That changes the combat baseline. Hornet’s mobility gives her options the Knight did not have in the same way, but enemies need ways to respond when she moves quickly or tries to retreat. William Pellen said the basic ant warrior is built from the same moveset as the original Hornet boss, with additions that help it catch Hornet as she moves away. A creature that might look like a routine opponent can therefore demand more attention than its size or status suggests.
What makes fights feel demanding?
Enemies interrupt predictable attacks
Enemies can feint, backstep, guard, and counter, according to the PlayStation Blog’s mechanics overview. Those behaviors make it riskier to treat every opening as a cue to attack. You may need to watch what an opponent is doing, wait out a defensive move, and choose a safer moment to commit.

Healing is a resource decision
Bind is a faster heal that restores three health, but it requires a full Silk meter and consumes all of it. It can also be used in mid-air. That creates a trade-off: spending Silk can help recover health during a fight, but it uses the resource rather than preserving it for other possibilities. The faster action is useful, but it still calls for a deliberate opening and a decision about when recovery is worth the cost.
Movement helps, but does not make encounters automatic
Hornet can grab ledges and pull herself up, and she can unlock combat tools. Team Cherry’s original 2019 announcement also pitched nimble moves, craftable weapons, traps and mechanisms, quests, more than 150 new foes, and a Silk Soul mode unlocked after conquering the game. Those features describe the breadth of the game’s original pitch; they are not a complete guide to every available tactic. Mobility and tools expand your options, while enemies’ responses mean you still have to judge timing and positioning.

Can you avoid a fight that feels too hard?
Gibson said players should be able to go “way off the path” and mitigate difficulty through exploration, learning, or even circumventing a challenge, rather than getting stonewalled. That is the developers’ stated design aim, not a guarantee that every obstacle has a simple workaround. Still, it suggests that repeating the same fight immediately is not always the only way forward.
- Learn the opponent: Watch for feints, defensive moves, and counters before choosing when to attack.
- Change your approach: Use Hornet’s mobility, available tools, and the environment where they help you create a safer opening.
- Explore elsewhere: If progress stalls, look for another route or something new to learn before returning.
The point is not that every difficult encounter can be skipped, but that the game’s intended answer to difficulty includes more than reflexes alone. Gibson’s remarks are quoted in GameSpot; they explain the studio’s intention, not how every player will experience each obstacle.

Is Silksong objectively harder than Hollow Knight?
There is no authoritative numeric difficulty measure or controlled comparison in the cited coverage that establishes that every player will find Silksong harder than Hollow Knight. What the sources do establish are differences in design: a faster, more skillful protagonist; enemies adjusted to respond to her mobility; a heal tied to Silk; and foes that use defensive behaviors. Those are useful comparison points, not a universal score.
Whether those choices make the game feel harder depends on the player and the encounter. Someone who quickly adapts to Hornet’s movement and enemy patterns may experience the challenge differently from someone who prefers the Knight’s pace or finds resource-based healing stressful. The developers’ explanation is about why they designed the world this way, not proof that every difficulty spike will feel balanced to every player.
