Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Skyrim can look “zoomed in” for different reasons: the third-person camera may be too close, first-person Field of View (FOV) may feel too narrow, or the image may be cropped or stretched to fit the display. Start by identifying which part of the view is affected, then use the matching camera or display setting. The right fix depends on your platform, edition, camera mode, and recent changes.
First, identify what looks zoomed in
- Only your character looks too close in third person: try the camera-distance controls.
- The first-person world view feels too narrow: adjust the in-game FOV setting.
- The whole screen, menus, or interface looks cropped or stretched: check display resolution and aspect ratio, especially on PC.
These symptoms point to different settings; the title alone does not establish a single cause. Bethesda’s support instructions cover camera controls, first-person FOV, and Skyrim Special Edition display settings separately.

Adjust the camera distance or point of view
If the problem is the camera sitting too close to your character, check the point-of-view controls before changing display settings. Bethesda documents F as the default PC key to switch point of view and the mouse wheel to adjust the view. Its console instructions describe using the right stick and left stick to adjust the view. See Bethesda’s Skyrim point-of-view instructions and its character point-of-view instructions.
- Switch between first- and third-person view using the control for your platform. On PC, Bethesda lists F by default.
- In third person, use the mouse wheel on PC or the documented stick controls on console to move the camera view.
- If the default input does nothing, check your control scheme: the relevant control may have been remapped.
Widen the first-person view with the FOV slider
If the view is too close only while you are in first person, adjust Field of View in the game rather than the third-person camera distance. Bethesda’s documented path is:
#1 Best Overall
- Skyrim reimagines the open-world fantasy epic, pushing the game play and technology of a virtual world to new heights
- Play any type of character you can imagine, and do whatever you want; the legendary freedom of choice, storytelling
- Skyrim's new game engine brings to life a complete virtual world with rolling clouds, rugged mountains, bustling cities, lush fields
- Choose from hundreds of weapons, spells, and abilities; the new character system allows you to play any way you want
- Requires internet connection and free steam account to activate
- Launch the game, select your character, and enter the game.
- Open the main options, choose Settings, then select Camera.
- Under First Person, adjust the slider next to Field of View.
Bethesda says this setting is saved per character. Its support page, How do I access the first-person FOV slider?, gives the same menu route.
Check resolution and aspect ratio if the whole screen looks wrong
On PC, a cropped or stretched full image suggests checking display setup, not assuming the camera is the cause. For Skyrim Special Edition, open the launcher’s Options and inspect the resolution and aspect ratio. Bethesda says the launcher’s auto-detect feature recommends settings based on system hardware. Its resolution and aspect-ratio instructions also acknowledge stretched UI with ultrawide resolutions. That establishes a possible display-layout issue, not that ultrawide is responsible for every zoom complaint.

When to try general graphics troubleshooting
If you are also having graphics performance or framerate problems, Bethesda’s PC troubleshooting guidance suggests resetting auto-detected video options. That guidance addresses performance and framerate, not camera zoom, so treat it as a separate graphics fallback rather than a guaranteed zoom fix. See Bethesda’s Skyrim PC performance and framerate troubleshooting.

- Whether the problem appears in first person, third person, or both.
- Whether it affects only the camera, or also menus, items, and cutscenes.
- Whether it began after changing a setting, changing displays, or installing a mod.
- Your display resolution and aspect ratio, if you play on PC.
Bethesda’s instructions do not establish a universal fix for mod-specific or save-specific camera problems. The checks above help identify which category to investigate without assuming an unverified console command, INI edit, or mod workaround will solve it.
