Steam says verifying game files may take several minutes, but it does not set a universal completion time. The wait varies with the game and your system, and a slow progress indicator alone does not reveal the cause. First check that Steam is verifying installed files—not downloading or processing an update—then let the check run without other disk-intensive work.
How long should Steam verify game files?
Steam Support describes the process as one that “may take several minutes.” That is guidance, not a promised maximum: Steam does not publish a standard time or speed benchmark for every game and computer. The game being checked and the system running it affect how long the operation takes.
So a long wait, by itself, is not enough to conclude that your drive is failing, antivirus software is interfering, or Steam is having a server problem. Steam’s guidance does not identify the cause of an individual delay without more information, such as which screen you are on and whether the progress is changing.
Make sure Steam is actually verifying files
“Verifying” is sometimes used to describe an update or download. Those are different processes: Steam provides a separate Download Manager to show update progress. If Steam is downloading or processing an update, do not treat that wait as the Library’s file-verification process. Valve notes that some game packaging can mean a relatively quick download followed by slow update processing with substantial local disk activity; that explains an update scenario, not every verification delay.

For an update, open Steam’s Download Manager to see its progress. Steam also provides bandwidth-limit and update settings, but an update taking a while does not establish that the installed files are damaged.
Run a file verification the way Steam recommends
- Restart your computer, then launch Steam.
- Open Library and select the game.
- Open the game’s Properties, then choose Installed Files.
- Select Verify integrity of game files.
While the check runs, avoid system-intensive work such as disk defragmentation or antivirus scanning, and do not verify multiple games at the same time. Steam does not give a universal timeout, so there is no official number of minutes after which a check should be considered stuck.

What to do if Steam reports failed files
A failed-file message does not always mean the installation is damaged. Steam says some files may fail verification normally because they are local configuration files that should not be replaced, and that result can safely be ignored. Consider further troubleshooting when failures recur alongside other file errors or the game continues to have problems—not from one message alone.
When to investigate the library or storage
If verification repeatedly fails or other file errors appear, Steam lists storage-file corruption as a possibility, including corruption related to hardware problems, software crashes, or power surges. These are possibilities to investigate, not a diagnosis based only on a slow check. Check for broader signs of drive trouble and consult Steam’s instructions for repairing library-folder permissions if the symptoms point to a library-access issue.

If the game still will not launch
A completed verification does not guarantee that every launch problem is fixed. Steam recommends checking files as a general troubleshooting step; if the game still will not launch, follow Steam’s launch guidance. For a persistent issue specific to one game, contact that game’s developer for diagnosis.
